My 6 Month Old Is Little

My six month baby boy seems very small to me. He was born a healthy 7lbs 9ozs, now he only weighs 14lbs 8ozs. He is very active, crawls, sits up on his own, and gets around everywhere. He hasn't lost any weight from being sick or anything, and he eats 5 8oz bottles and 3 or more jars of stage 2 foods. I don't know why he doesn't seem to be growing. Doctor says its fine but i was wondering if anyone else had a problem like this and what if anything can i do?

What can I do next?

I wouldn't worry about it. My kids were small for their ages. As long as they're hanging out around the same area on the growth charts I wouldn't worry. Every child is different. My babies were small, my SIL's babies were all huge (3 month old is 15-18lbs.) everyone of them is within the ranges of normal. Just think how much easier it is to carry around and pick up a 14 pounder rather than a 25 pounder. :)

my son was born average size & was always around the 25th percentile in height & less than the 5th in weight. He was always growing, but always stayed in that range. He's a little above that range now (at 3 years old), but he's healthy, happy & just fine. If the doctor's not worried, you definitely shouldn't be.

My first daughter was 9lbs 10.5oz when she was born and ALWAYS and STILL is at the top of the charts. My second daughter was 8lbs 5.5oz (induced a week early bc of how big my first one was) she never really and still doesnt grow very fast she was alway at the bottom of the charts and has recently moved to the middle. I was always worried about her because I only had my first to compare with but the DR was never worried she was growing and was proportionate (sp?). She is still really small she only weighs 26lbs and she will be 3 in Feb. She has alway wore the clothes for her age, now she has gotten a little taller so everything is too short but huge in the waist. She is a skinny little thing. My husband is tall with EXTREMELY high metabolism he has always had a hard time gaining weight sometimes so skinny it hurt. His sis is the same way only she is short. So I guess the younger one is taking after his side, she looks like him. The older one looks like me but must have inherited his height. Neither have ever been chunky or anything the oldest just tall and skinny but with some mass and the little one looks tall and is really skinny. Anyway long story short if the DR is not worried and he seems healthy to you dont worry it is just how he is. If for any reason your mommy instincts are telling you different see another DR for a second opinion.

Hi M.,
Maybe that's just how your little guy will be. My older daughter was always super tall/long. Our little one is super small ~ she's only in the 3rd % for height & weight & she's an eating machine. My nephew who is 9 mo. is 1 lb. less than she is (she's a little over 22 mo)~they're a year apart & they're a pound apart!

He probably has a higher metabolism and burns off the calories quicker than the rest of us do. I wouldn't worry about it, he is eatting well.

M., as long as he is growing and is hitting all the developmental milestones there is nothing to worry about, he is expending all he eats in crawling and all the other physical stuff, my son was the same, it takes him a while to put on some weight, but he is the most energitic kid ever, he is always on the move, I used to worry just like you, but I don't any more, hope this help!

Does he seem more active than the average baby? It could be he's just working off all those calories from play. My son is on the small side (and weighed about the same as yours at birth), but he's so active he works his food off - and you can only feed a baby so much.

He'll get there, don't worry about it.

M.....your baby is not a dwarf!! Don't worry. My five month old is only 13 punds. She was 6 lbs. at birth. So she too will probibly be 14 lbs. when she is 6 months old. If your baby is hitting all his milestones, don't worry. Some babies are smaller than others. This world is full of small people, big people, tall people. Every person is different. So what if he is not as heavy as another 6 month old? My baby is only in the 25% percentile for her height, so she is short and not very heavy and my doctor also said there is nothing to worry about. Your boy is eating good, crawling ans sitting up. He is a healthy, normal 6 month old. Don't worry and enjoy his babyhood! Merry Christmas!

High-calorie and good fat foods like sweet potatoes and avacado are good. Jarred purrees are totally useless, they have tons of added water and few calories for the volume.

Relactate and breastfeed him. That will plump him right up! :)

My son is also small. He was born 7 lbs. 5 oz. (which is average), but then he has been 1 percentile in weight ever since his 1 month check up. There was even a time he dropped to 0.5 percentile in weight. He is now almost 20 months. He just made it to 20 lbs. at 18 months. Don't stress about it. As long as he is doing everything he should be for his age, and the doctor is not worried, try not to worry about it yourself. Easy said then done, I know from experience. Good luck!

PS- When my son was finally on baby food and table foods his doctor told us to put butter on everything to help add calories.

Usually if the doctor isn't worried then you're doing fine.

It could just be genetics, anyone in your family on the small side? You? Your husband? Grandmother or Grandfather?

Both my husband and I are short, both at the low end of average so our daughter has always been on the shorter end of the scales the doctor uses.

If you are really worried try increasing how much he eats little by little. Does he still seem hungry after you feed him? Good reason to up the amount he gets.

Good luck.

As my doctor told me about my little guy, if he is healthy and eats like he should, things are fine. However, I do want you to know that a friend of my sister had a midget - and they knew as soon as he was born that he would be a little person, so don't worry about that. Her next child was very small, but wasn't a midget (arms were proportioned correctly, etc.). They test him all the time & he seems to be quite normal. He is now 7 years old and still small for his age, but everything is fine. So don't worry. They would have known right away if he was a small person, and if the doctor is concerned, he would be running test - and still possibly find out he is just a little guy. As he gets older (middle school probably) if he isn't progressing as he should they might recommend growth hormones. But your son sounds just like mine; however, my son was actually losing weight right after he was born & they kept an eye on him - I had to give up on breast feeding & give him formula because I wasn't giving him enough. But they figured that out by like day two or three! He is still below the 50 percentile, but not all that different from the other kids. He does remark that he is the shortest in his class, (he is almost 10), and I told him to get used to it, because I was always the smallest in my class, and his dad probably was too. He still weighs more than I did when I was his age! I didn't weigh 50 pounds until the 7th grade! (I've made up for it since! LOL!)

Mellisa,
Relax, your son will grow fast enough , don't wish his babyhood away.He is very active and that is good.Do you want him to be a fat adult ? I think not let him grow as nature see's fit.He will right before your eyes just as your other 3 children did.Enjoy him being small it won't last long.

Both of my children were on the small side. My daughter was only 18lbs at 18 months. She finally was on the chart for weight at her 2 year appointment and then at 5% mark. She was always 50% for her height just really thin. My son only weighs in at 25lbs and he is almost 2. He also is in the 5% for weight and 50% for height. Both of them are EXTREMELY active kids. They started out average size and just continued at a slow growth rate. I wouldn't worry about your son because it just may be "normal" for him. My little girl hit her growth spurt this summer going from a size 2 (she is 3.5) to a size 5 now. Her shoe size changed from a 6 to a 10 over 3 months. So, just be prepared for a spurt in your son at some point!

Oh please do not worry! Sounds like you little one is growing up fast! Already able to scoot about! My darling daughter was great with her weight and didn't even attempt to crawl until she was 9 months! However once she did the weight dropped! She went from just above average to below the 5th %! Talk about worried, we freaked! Doctor got concerned as well. We watched her, kept a journal of her eating habits and guess what! She just turned 6 years and she is still tiny! She is very thin (like dad) and petite (like mom). She eats very well and is very active.
HSound like your son is old enough to try table foods - plain cheerios, maybe the fiber & carbs would help bulk him up. Do not worry though.

Good luck, we're still trying to find out what's going on with my daughter. God be with you, I'll keep you in my prayers.

Please don't worry. Your son is just growing in his own time, at his on speed. If he's eating, appropriately active and healthy, you have nothing to worry about.

My kids are both small. It took me some time to accept that they are just always going to be smaller than most of their peers. But they are healthy and I've learned that is the most important thing. My son is 4 and weights 27 lbs. He might be one of the smallest kids in his class, but he's smart and has a great personality. Those are the things we focus on.

My daughter is 2 and is 24 lbs. Again, She's petite, but wonderful. She's totally healthy.

Try not to worry. Follow your gut. If you believe your son is healthy, then let that be your focus, not his size.

14 pounds at 6 months doesn't sound abnormally small to me... i wouldn't worry. if he's eating and his growth has slowly increased over time, it's not an issue.

just be glad you don't have to wipe poop from fat rolls, lug around a huge baby, put a 6 month old in a big kid car seat, or listen to "what a chunk!" all the time... :)

Your little guy sounds healthy, active, and wonderful. If he's growing and not losing weight and meeting milestones, I wouldn't worry. He may just be small. I'm sure the pediatrician will continue tracking his progress and they'll let you know if there's anything to be concerned about. I have heard of babies just being really small and they may remain on the smaller side but grow up perfectly fine.
