My 6 Month Old Has a Little Sore on the Roof of His Mouth.

He just recently started eating puréed food made in a baby bullet. It seems to bother him, has anyone else had this problem? Any advice? Is it possible it could be from the spoon, because sometimes he'll chew on the spoon a little when I feed him. That you for any helpful advice!! :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank u to all the mommies who have been helping me out in this beautiful thing called motherhood. I'm sorry I ask a lot of questions but I just want to make sure I'm doing right by my baby, and please don't get me wrong, I'm just looking for advice because I am a new mom and worrying comes with the territory.

The foods I gave him were: apples, pears, nectarines and bananas. It turns out it was just a little irritation from the spoon, which is a child safe plastic spoon.
And to Wild Woman, I am NOT trying to rush my son growing up!! I am just asking questions for my sons sake and not trying to get medical advice. If I thought there was a serious problem, I would most definitely call the doctor immediately!! Not just ask "random people on the Internet!"
I look forward to reading the helpful responses from mothers on here, and do not need a judgemental attitude from strangers like wild woman. I get enough of that from my mother in law, thanks!!
But again thank u to all the HELPFUL, not hurtful responses!!

He's learned how to "chew" food and move it around his mouth. His tongue is pushing food around and the roof of the mouth is a pretty standard sticking spot. It'll go away as the roof of his mouth loses it's tenderness and he learns how to move food around. He probably doesn't even feel it.

6 months is just right for trying foods. No worries there.

I think it's very possible that he accidentally irritated the roof of his mouth with the spoon. You could try laying off the food for a couple of days and see if the sore looks better then try again. If it doesn't look better soon, I will definitely call your doctor and ask him/her to look at it. Better safe than sorry!

Well he's only six months old so if the food (or spoon) is bothering him stop giving it to him, that's just common sense.
You can always try solids again in a few months.
And PLEASE call the doctor re the sore in his mouth!

You don't mention what foods you've tried. Could you list the foods you gave him before he got the sore?

It's probably that he rubbed his roof a bit sore with the spoon. Mine would chew them too - we did the rubber tipped kind, but there was a little one we had that wasn't very soft and they would jam that in there - I just stopped using it.

The reason I ask about the food is just in case it was a food that irritated his mouth. Very unlikely, but I'd probably just go back in my mind and think if I introduced something new. I used to introduce one food a week (or something like that) just to rule out any kind of reaction.

But does sound like may have been spoon. We didn't have sores no. Could he have rammed a toy in there when you weren't looking? They tend to stick everything in their mouths at that age.

He's a little young, in my own opinion, to start much other than formula and rice cereal. I'm glad you're making your own food though, jarred stuff is so nasty and is not nutritious in the least.

Get a plastic coated baby spoon, he could be sensitive to metal or find/try one that is very rounded on it's edges.

Perhaps the "food" item is causing the issue? It could be too harsh for him? I imagine you are doing one plain food a week? Seeing if he has any reactions to it? Then adding another the next week or so?

Some foods have acids or things that can irritate babies. The only one I can think of offhand is for much older kids, orange juice. Some kids can't drink it until they're older or they get diarrhea. It's too acidic. I think anything with tomatoes can cause the same thing.

If you think it's the spoon - I always gave my son one of those very soft, completely rubber spoons (not coated metal, but completely soft). I let him chew and flail with that in his hand while I used the plastic-coated spoon to get the food into him.

Since it bothers him, back off the puree and give him oatmeal cereal made with formula or breastmilk until it heals, then slowly introduce the purees again, one at a time, to make sure it wasn't a reaction to a food.

Personally I think 6 months is just right for giving him pureed food. It's right on time, not too early and not too late. I think it's most likely from the spoon. It could be that he is allergic to something, but if he is he would probably have more than one sore, or redness around his mouth and chin area. That's the easiest way to check for food sensitivities.

Those little Gerber spoons are the best because they are coated in plastic but still sturdy and small for their little mouths.

Make sure you are just introducing one or two new foods a week at first so that if there is an issue with food you will be able to narrow it down quickly. Both my kids started on pureed food at this age and they were both feeding themselves 100% by 8-9 months and they could both use utensils by age 1, so keep at it and life might actually become easier! ;-)

He's six months old. Food should only be introduced one food at a time and for a week before another food is introduced. This is for allergic reactions. With this sore? you SHOULD be calling his doctor, not asking random people on the internet. Sorry if that sounds rude or harsh - but this is a SIX MONTH OLD BABY. He's got a sore on the roof of his mouth! I'd be calling my doctor. TODAY.

The spoon is a plastic spoon, yes? Not a metal one?? He should ONLY be using the soft, pliable plastic baby spoons. It's common for them to chew on them. They are teething. It helps them break down the gums.

If he doesn't like the food? Maybe slow down and wait a week or two - let the sore heal (after he's seen by a doctor) and then move on from there. Don't be in an all fired rush for your son to grow up. It will happen fast enough.
