My 6 Mo Breastmilk Baby Is Ready to Start Solids

Well, Sierra is now 6 months old and is ready to start solids.
(BTW, she is allergic to egg, dairy, and peanut.)

I'm skipping rice cereal and we're bypassing purees.
(We tried me feeding her purees a few times on a spoon and she clamped her mouth shut. Snuck some in while she held the spoon, but she spit 95% of it back out.)

Apparently she wants to feed herself instead. She fed herself a few handfuls of mashed potatoes at dinner last night!

Can you give me a quick run down of how you approached solid foods with your breastfed children?
Any comments about infant vitamin supplements are welcome too!
Thanks so much!

Wow!! You sound like me! My son will be 8 months old in one week and we have been trying ever since 6 months old to feed him the cereals and purees. He does the same thing every time...clamps his mouth shut and tilts back his head. DRIVES ME NUTS! lol. He stares at food like he wants it and will even eat foods given to him with fingers but the minute you try to put a spoon near his mouth he refuses. I thought my son was allergic to dairy b/c of the adverse reactions he had when I consumed it. So, I've been on a dairy free, nut free diet since he was 2 months old. BUT...I've fed him finger foods with dairy in them recently and he's been fine. (Pedi said that sometimes breastfed babies have a more sensitive digestive tract but quickly outgrow food allergies/sensitivities) Anyway, at 8 months we have finally given up on the cereal/purees and even tried the stage 3 foods. He wants nothing to do with them and LOVES any soft table foods we give him. Since doing this we've ran in to TONS of moms who say their breastfed babies skipped baby food altogether and went straight for solids. (Baby food is soo bland anyway!) He ate cheese potatoes last night and sweet asparagus tonight! So, I'm right there with ya and wish you lots of luck! I'd be interested on info regarding the vitamin supplements too. :)

I had a similar problem with my first daughter (who was breastfeed) when she was 6 months old. No interest in cereal or purees. She was happy to chew on dry toast, but I think that was more for teething. I spoke to my doctor about it. He suggested that she simply was not ready to move to solids yet. He was right. 3 weeks later she was happily eating all of the cereal and purees I would give her. You may want to talk to your doctor before deciding to skip cereal and purees all together.

Good luck.

Have you ever heard of baby led weaning? It is a term used in other parts of the world to describe a method of introducing solids/table foods to babies, it does not mean weaning your baby from the breast! It sounds like your daughter is already trying to use this method, and would rather skip the pureed stuff. (Which is just fine)
Take a look at these websites, it may be a good approach for your DD!

You should talk to your pediatrician. If your baby is really allergic to all those things, the doctor will recomend to wait until she is a little older to introduce new foods.

My daughter was breastfed and it just took her a little while to get used to eating from a spoon. I would try to give her a little bit every meal (3 meals per day) from a spoon and see if she gets used to it. If she wants to feed herself, then try something like bananas (cut into small bites) or small mushy veggies (like canned diced carrots or peas). These she can pick up for herself and likely won't choke on. I would go by the same rules though and only give her one food at a time for 2-3 days to be sure she doesn't have any other allergies. Sometimes, kids just aren't ready for solids right at 6 months. If she won't take the cereal or purees, wait a week or 2 and try again....I don't think I would abandon them altogether.

Good luck!
