Are you still breastfeeding? If so, did you eat anything particularly fishy or even asparagus which gives urine a very unusual smell.

Have any of you had this happen? I have never smelled any thing like this with him. He is 5 months old and he has some constipation issues and I have given him juice but today gave him Milk of Mag instead. His dirty diaper smelled fishy! I recently started my period for the first time since having him and I am wondering if this would have any effect on him and or what else would cause this. Also his urine looked a little darker, but he is still drinking up to 25 oz a day and I have been even giving him just water some, so shouldn't be dehydrated. Any clues?
thanks for the replies back. I have been going by what my pediatrician said to do with the 1 1/2 oz water and 1 1/2 oz juice mixed together for some time now to help with BM's. That seemed to not be helping very well so I tried the M of mag b/c that is suggested in the manual the pediatrician gives to all of their patients. But just to be on the safe side I called them today, and they did not seem concerned unless the smell is a persistent thing then I could bring him in for eval. He is acting totally normal, and doesn't seem sick, so probably a fluke. I do breastfeed but he is mostly formula fed. Probably 80% formula and 20% BF. But my hormone change with period starting or something i ate or something the mix of cereal juice etc may have made that smell basically I was told to just watch and see if it happens again. His pee is fine I checked it today and at this age it is ok to give him some water in order to get them used to the taste so they like it when they are older, it is the healthiest thing they can drink, plus my little guy is a chunky monkey definitely not missing any calories, he weighs 20#'s. hope this helps others and I will let you know if anything else comes of it. Thanks!

First of all, do not give him plain water. You will throw his electrolytes out of balance very quickly. Infants don't need water at all, unless mixed with formula. The smell was probably the milk of mag, probably not good for a baby this young. Did you check with his doctor first? All babies need for constipation is pear, apple or white grape juice. If that doesn't work, use a pediatric suppository.
it is not known whether magnesium hydroxide (milk of magnesia) will be harmful to an nursing baby. Do not take magnesium hydroxide without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Next, a "fishy smelling" poop/dark pee, can mean a lot of things even kidney problems or dehydration, many things... I would really take him to the Doctor. And tell them you gave your baby milk of magnesia.
Take him to the Doctor....
Please talk to your doctor. A breastfeeding baby should not be given milk of magnesia, juice or extra water. It's one thing to start baby food with a little bit of water in a sippy to start learning, but they should not need extra water just to avoid dehydration. Breast milk is all they need.
Did the doctor suggest Milk of Mag? Usually they lean towards glycerine suppositories.
It is not normal for urine to have a foul odor. If you are not sure it was the urine or BM, I would call the doctor. When urine has an odor it can mean there is an infection.
