he is a so active kid, he drinks a lot of water though he eats a lot as well..loves yogurt.. though not much of juice..
no constipation..well at least thats what i know coz whenever he goes, he goes easily and no fuzz.. he doesnt complain about tummy aches..no bloated stomach..he passes gas well.. he doesnt hold his poop, though when its coming he has to hold his butt and running to the bathroom while calling me. now im trying the everyday sit routine for 5minutes. hope it will work.. but im just wondering if this is normal.no poop in 3days. he is just fine on the days with no poop, no complains at all.. ive searched the internet and found some kids that dont poop as well in 3-4days but with constipation.. so is my kid any different?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

his diet in the morning usually scrumbled eggs or cereals or bread..lunch and dinner i make sure there is protein and veges..my husband is very particular in the food that we eat and our kids diet..my kids havent tasted junkfoods yet and soda/softdrinks are not allowed in the house..my son had his first lil bite of pure chocolate at the age of 3 but never make it often since then..when they started eating solid foods, i processed fresh veges for them..maybe that is the reason why i still can count in one hand how many times they got sick.. and in grocery i take time to look at how much sodium and sugar a product have..
anyways, i let him try once in a while the 5min sit on the toilet bowl.. but i put him usually on the 2nd or 3rd day..on the 3rd he usually poops so i guess you are all right..that is his routine.. and oh! i asked his pedia, not pooping daily doesnt mean you have unhealthy digestive system.. it is just his routine..well, as long as he is not constipated..
thank you all for the answers, it really made me feel at ease.. im sometimes so eager to know everything whats going on especially if it concerns my kids health... Happy New Year..! and thanks again..!

I was told that you need to go atleast once a day. I would say that if he's waiting 3 days to go, it's not good...especially since it's allowing bacterial buildup & fermentation inside his digestive system. A professional evaluation is suggested.

This is my four year old son too.
If the stools are really hard then it's a problem. You will need to give something to soften the stools. They make a great gummy laxative that you can give him daily with his vitamins.
If they are not hard and he has no problem passing them then I would say this is his "normal' and wouldn't worry about it.

PLEASE don't make your child sit on the toilet everyday. His normal pattern is to have a bowel movement every few days. Why would you even think that this is a problem? Every person is different. Some people go daily, some every 2 days and some every 3 days. Your son is one that goes every 3 days. Nothing at all is wrong with that. Leave him alone. His body is just fine. If you FORCE him to sit on the pot when he doesn't have to go, he will hate sitting on the pot and may actually cause constipation problems. Sounds like he has a very healthy gut. Please be thankful and go on with life.

I don't know if it's a problem, but as you said he's not straining. But I'd still try to add more fruits and veggies and whole grains too, esp during the winter months.

I found that my kids were going longer without pooping and complaining every so often that it was "hard". I cut back on some of the snacks (crackers, fruit roll ups, string cheese, etc.) and made them drink some water or apple juice, have fresh fruits and veggies and now all is well.

You don't mention what your son's diet is like really. Try adding some applesauce, frozen blueberries (my kids pop those like candy), fresh fruit with vanilla yogurt and granola and I bet he'll be pooping daily.

I don't think his pooping every 3 days is abnormal, however I think more frequently is a sign of a healthier digestive system.

Just my viewpoint.

Best wishes

I have always been told we are all different. It can be normal to poop 3x a day to 3x a week. You might want to bring it up to a doctor, but I wouldn't be overly worried about it unless he seems to be in discomfort.

as long as he isn't having a hard time going when he goes.. does he eat veggies and fruit too... make sure he has a well balanced diet.. like some grapes, a little bit of string beans.. some cereal.... this will help...it just might be how he will go... if he isnt having problems don't worry... when i was young i would go every 3 days or so.. not big deal... don't worry.

I don't know, you might want to run this past your pediatrician. I would make sure though that your son is getting enough fiber. Whole grain breads, cereals, and pastas are loaded with it - so are raspberries and pumpkin (which can be baked into bread). Prunes and prune juice are natural laxatives, and plums, peaches, and pears can be good too.

Since gut health is so important, it wouldn't hurt to mention this to his pediatrician, and put him on probiotics for a while. My older daughter was like your son. It could possibly be normal, and we thought so. The pediatrician was not worried. It seemed normal for her because that's just the way she was, or so we thought. But it actually was food sensitivities (the length of time she didn't go grew to over a week!). Things got really bad for a long time starting in her late teens - but with her brain and mood - we still didn't think "gut." She actually needed extended anti-candidal treatment and probiotics in addition to getting off the foods she was sensitive to.

Another thing that can contribute to this is low thyroid hormone, so the pediatrician might want to check that as well - not just TSH but free T3 and freeT4.

Just so that you can know for sure that it is normal for him and not something to worry about.
