We moved into our new house in April, in May my son who is 4 started having nosebleeds, they were infrequent at first one a month but lately they are happening daily. I took him to our Dr and he said buy a humidifier for his room ( they occur at night alot) and put vaseline in his nostrils twice a day. Any other advice??? It scares him ALOT when it happens and all the blood he swallows makes him throw up. It's not even winter yet and I'm having to use a humidifier...it's FLORIDA...don't we have enough humidity already?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for their advice and I will be taking ALOT of it and using it. We went in to the DR he said my son's nose looks very irritated (probably from picking) and also put us on a daily vitamin that has more Vitamin C. We are going to try the Vaseline and Humidifier for a few weeks and see how it goes, if they continue we are going to do some further testing. Also, some people had asked, our house is brand new, so I don't believe mold could be a problem, but that is a very good point. It could be something inside the house causing it, we might go stay with my Mom or something but, I want to see if these other things help first so I don't do too much at once and end up confused as yo what was the right thing.

Thanks to All,
J.

I have no experience with this but just guessing at the time frame, I'd be suspicious of something in the house. Can you stay at family or friends house for a long weekend and see if his nosebleeds stop? If not, maybe have a family "vacation" and go to Amelia Island and stay in a bed and breakfast and enjoy some time away. There are lots of chemicals in new carpets and varnish on trim etc, that may be causing his mucus membranes to go haywire. Might be worth a try.

J.... That is very scary for your 4 year old and I am sure for you too. The only thing I could suggest is an air filter... I am with you on the humidifier... I don't see how that could help. BUT an air filter would take pollen, dust, pet hair, etc that may be contributing to the aggrivation. The Wellness company I work for has the very best in air filters. You can call me at ###-###-#### ask for M. or Paul. You can view it at www.mynikken.com. This air filter is the best on the market. My sister has allergies that require her to take shots to control them. When we visited her with the air filter, she didn't need shots, meds or tissues the whole week. For the first time since she moved to Florida, she could breathe. It was neat. She is buying one soon. Just a thought. Good luck with your son.

Nosebleeds are a sign of a vitamin C deficency. Purchase some vitamin C chewables and start giving them to him. This information was taken from a book by Adelle Davis "let's Get Well". It is a cheap remedy and should work. My oldest got nosebleeds and we used the vitamin C and ended up doing a good multiple vitamin every day plus extra C and they stopped. Vitamin C is water soluable so it would be very hard to overdose. You can't lose anything by giving it a try.

Sincerely,
Deb

I'd be suspicious of the timing, too. When we moved into our newly built home, we had to rush our son (10 months-old then) to the hospital because his face swelled up so much from the new carpet. They had to give him Benedryl and a breathing treatment. I wasn't thrilled to move into a newly built home (I'm one of those natural, nontoxic, obsessive Moms) due to all the chemicals from the carpet, the cabinets, the paint, etc.
Another cause could be iron-fortified vitamins. If he happens to take those, you might cut back to every other day and gauge things from there.
I'm so sorry you're going through this. I have an almost 4 year-old who would be terrified and throwing up, too (same one who had the carpet reaction above). My heart goes out to you and your little guy. Best of luck.

Hi,
Since they are happening daily, I would definately follow the advice of getting out and seeing if it happens outside your house. A little weekend vacation or something like that. The timing is just too much to overlook. I really don't see how the humidifier would help since this has been happening all summer and not just recently. Humidifiers haven't done us any good because it is naturally so humid here, even in the fall. The vitamins and air purifier are a good idea, but I really think that establishing that it is something in your home is really important first. If you do just happen to "fix" the problem and still not know for sure what is was that was causing it, then who know what else is going on that you just aren't showing syptoms of. Do you know background on the house? Sometimes, older people even here in FL, don't use the air all that much. That just leads to mold, mold, mold! If you take your son out and his nose bleeds stop, then you know you need to get serious testing done. I feel so badly for you both and i hope this gets resolved!

It's been really dry lately , especially for Florida. That could be a big part of it... yes, we live in FL and it's humid, but not as of late... so that shift can contribute to nosebleeds. I get them when it's really cold.

And yes, the humidifier will do really well in helping that. Also, make sure he's not picking his nose. That's the first thing my ped. asks her patients when they start complaining of nosebleeds.

The mold thing could be something you'd want to look into also... couldn't hurt.

To help with your son not being so scared when he gets his nosebleeds is to give him a red washcloth that way he can't see all the blood.

Out of my 3 sons, two have the nosebleed issue ( 6 and 3 year old). They get it when it is very hot, or even sometimes in the cold .. sometimes it also happens if they are picking their nose .. Vaseline is certainly great idea .. I will follow the Dr. advice ..it happens to us in the night also .. makes me upset to do so much laundry ( their clothes, bedsheet and pillow covers etc..) But my kids are so used to .. they will take the ice and put it on if it is the day time ..
And like other said .. check for mold and if you can, go to vacation or friends' house and see if that change stops it .. then it is possibly something in the house

Did you have the house checked for mold? Sometimes mold can cause a nosebleed reaction to it if your son has an allegery to it. Make sure there arent any harmful spores or anything in the house just to make sure. Good Luck

I am having the same problem with my son as of now. I also took him to the doctors cause i thought he might of had a tumor or a blood clot in the brain, beleive me i threw a fit intill the doctors ordered a cat scan. well there was nothing there thankgoodness. So anyways the doctor sent him to a ent to look at his nose and they told me that the vesells in his nose were not growing probally with his age and that if the bleeding did not stop they would have to operate and fuse the vesselles together and that would stop the bleeding. I hope this helps you out. Just ask your doctor to send him to a ent to check his vesselles.

My son to had nose bleeds. I had to use saline nose sprays on him. As he got older we found out that it was allergies. Allergies cause sinus to dry out there for the nose bleeds. I am not sure if your son is old enough for allergy test but try a nasal spray and also like the dr said a humidifier. A humidifier reduced the nose bleeds til he was tested for allergies. I hope this helps some.

I had severe nosebleeds when I was a child. I would wake up in the middle of the night with them. We did the humidifier, stuff in the nose. Nothing worked. Then someone happen to tell my mom about a connection between banana's and nosebleeds. I don't remember what my mom said was the connection but soon after I stopped eating banana's the nosebleeds pretty much stopped. Not sure if there was a connection or not but it worked for me. Hope this helps.

You mentioned that your son was throwing up after his nose bleeds because of the blood. Most people think you are supposed to lean back to stop the bleeding but in fact as an EMT I would suggest you have your son lean forward to prevent the blood from draining into the stomach.

Good luck and I hope you can find what is causing this,

S.

J., I am a mother of a 5yr old and a 1yr old. I have never had the nosebleed problem with either of them, but my son had some other things that urged me to do some research. So I went online and remember one of the symptoms of one of the things I was looking into was frequent nose bleeds. For the life of me I cannot remember what it was, but I know it wasn't from a dry nose. Not saying that is not what it is, but just letting you know there are other things that can cause it and you may want to get a second opinion just to be safe. Or even do a little online research yourself on nose bleeds and possible causes. Having them everyday on a regular basis is not normal. I would just hate to think it could potentially be something else and it is overlooked as a "dry nose." Don't worry, but just make sure that every potential cause has been eliminated. Hope this helps!

All I can add is my son who is 5 had the occasionally then last monthy more frequently. I thought it was from picking but it seems to have been other causes. 2 wks ago just like every night it started bleeding in his left nostril so i rolled tissue up his nose like every other night but then the other nostril started bleeding so i had him come in the kitchen (not to get it on the carpet) and plugged up the other - mind you i was holding both at this point and his head was held downward so he would not swallow - then it started coming out of his mouth - i figured it just because some had trickled down but it was in excess just like it does from the nose it was in his mouth - too my horror his left eye turned red with blood and he started dripping blood from his eye all oozing blood at the same time - then i freaked and called 911 - needless to say 15 minutes later the eye only had blood tears left the blood from the mouth stopped but the left nostril was still bleeding - in the end no one could give a concrete reason why nor had they seen it like that and promised it was 1 in a million - they had to sodder (forgive my spelling) his left nostril because it was still bl;eeding over an hour - they all told me nose bleeds are just a bother not an emergency???? go figure - so if thats all they could do for me i doubt there is any cure or prevention. Good luck with it all - I am still scared of it happening again.
