Hello moms,

I'm new to site. I have been reading some of the stories and think this place is wonderful and hope to get to meet some good people here. Here is my question.... My four year old is very intelligent little girl. She knows how to count to 20, know all her ABC's, all of her colors and is working on shapes now. Anyway, she has a little bit of a speech "impediment". I hate labeling it. She kinda has a little lisp I think maybe. I'm not to sure what is going on really. She talks, but not as well as I think she should be at this age. Now, in her defense, her father's side of the family had slight hearing problems that were all fixed with putting tubes in their ears. I have new insurance kicking in next month and will take her in then. The doctors office did check her hearing about a year ago, they said she started off well and then missed most of the end of the test, so they weren't sure that she understood how the test worked and said I should have her checked again in a year. So, I think she hears fine, but I'm not a doctor. If it turns out that her hearing is fine, does anyone know of a free program to assist me with this for her? My sister in law said that in the state of Nevada it is a law to help children with such problems possibly. A "Child Find" program? Has anyone heard of this. I did call and am suppost to call "Sierra Child developement Center" back this Tuesday for more info. But I was just curious if anyone knew of or this or had any other advice for me. She turns five this Jan but, she has to wait a whole year before she gets to start kindergarten because of her birthday. So my fear is if I don't get this taken care of now, she will get the help she needs with speech therapy in kindergarten, but will miss what she is suppose to be actually learning in kindergarten with all the other kids and have to redo the whole year, and then be behind almost 2 years.

Also looking for a good church to join in the South Meadows area

What can I do next?

Hi W.,
I asked my ped a similar question about a month ago about my son who struggles with stuttering because I wasn't sure if it was a phase or a real problem we needed to deal with for him. It is very hard to watch him struggle with words at times. Anyway if I remember correctly, I think he told me that the state of Nevada offers free hearing and speech through the school district starting at age 3, it might be worth checking into.

Childfind in northern Nevada will test for learning disabilities or delays in young children. At 3 years old, if their disability/delay is severe enough, they can be entered into a half-day preschool type class provided by the school district (bussing available). Also, if the speech delay is the only issue, or is minor enough not to warrant the 1/2 day program they can set up for speech only services through the school district. I believe this is also the case for physical therapy and occupational therapy services.

Call the School district. They have a speech therapist. My daughter just started kindergarten and I know some of the students in her class met with a speech therapist within the 1st couple days of school. Also, her best friend has a slight lisp as well. Her mom was going to one of those expensive outside learning centers and found out the school district helps. They had a free evaluation and she now see's the therapist for free once a week. (She's 4 by the way and will go to kindergarten next year)
