My 3 Yo Swallowed a Quarter an Hour Ago

My 3 yo son is now at the peds with Daddy getting an x-ray to see where his quarter went. Poor kid was at first freaked out that his throat hurt from swallowing the quarter, then he was just plain mad at Mommy because I wouldn't reach down his throat to get his quarter back for him so he could continue to play with it.

Gotta love my rambunctious little man! Just hoping that the x-ray shows that it's moved down to his stomach and isn't stuck in his throat. And hoping that it passes nicely in the next day or so. Otherwise his ped said they would have to go in and get it.

Since Daddy is the only one who can calm my son when he is freaked out, we called him at work to tell him what happened. When Daddy got home 15 minutes later, he had already googled what can happen when a 3 yo swallows a quarter and read a bunch of horror stories. Needless to say Daddy was totally freaked out when he got home. On the way out the door I heard my son say "Daddy, it's okay. I'm gonna be all right. Mommy told me the quarter will come out my butt tomorrow...but it will be covered in poop!".

Hopefully Daddy will call me soon to tell me what the ped said about the x-ray since I had to stay home with our baby.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

A little while after I posted, my hubby called and asked me to come and meet him at the peds. They had just taken his x-ray and it clearly showed that the quarter was still in his esophagus. Problem was he took the minivan with both the carseats in it and I had my baby girl at home with me. So I wuickly wracked my brain thinking of friends who had carseats who also had someone at home that could watch their kid(s) while they gave me a lift to the peds office. Thankfully my neighbor (whose parents are visiting from Bulgaria) was home and could give me a lift. Otherwise I could have walked the 8 blocks, but why walk in the heat when someone could give me a lift?

When I got to the peds office, we had to wait another 30 minutes to see the doc. Meanwhile my son is jumping all over the place totally freaking my hubby out. He thought that my son jumping could cause the quarter to get further lodged in his throat so he was trying to keep my son contained...that was a losing battle from the get go. Then the doc came in and told us we would have to go to Children's Hospital ER so they could remove it.

At Childrens, everyone was awesome! But it still took about 3 hours to get an OR booked so they could put my son out and try to retrieve the quarter. Then when they went to retrieve it, I guess with the muscle relaxation caused by the anesthesia and the camera probe pushing it's way down, the quarter moved down to his stomach. So at 11pm they sent us home and said to wait for it to pass.

But my poor baby had to be put under and when he came out, he was naturally freaked out and confused. But just before we were to leave, I was getting him dressed, he looked over at his nurse and said "thank you" all cute and snuggly and drowsy. Then his little ears perked up when she asked him if he wanted a popsicle. And when I put him in his carseat to come home he said, "Mommy, I am sorry I put the money in my mouth. I won't put anymore money in my mouth again so I don't have to come back to the doctor." Of course that just melted me inside. Poor kid!

So one long wait at the Children's ER, a anesthetic mask (which my son said wasn't fun and was a little scarey), a sore IV removal, and a yummy cherry popsicle later, we are at home on poop patrol.

Hopefully it comes out in the next day or two, if not, after Day 2 we might be back in the OR trying to retrieve it again :(.

Thanks!

Hi S., my son swallowed a penny when he was 4, i took him to medical, (we lived in japan at the time) and the doctor told me he would pass it, and with in 48 hours he did, we had to check his stools each time he went, and when he finally passed it and he saw the penny sticking out, he wanted his penny back, i told him that penny was dirty and gave hima new penny made him put it in his piggy bank, and he was happy with that. Let m know what happens. J.

Kids do the craziest things don't they! I am sure your son will be fine, and you and your hubby will too. In fact it is prob more traumtic for you than your son! But just think this will be a great story to tease him about when he is older! The best of luck!

Hi S.: I read this posting a little late. I'm so glad your son is going to be alright.I just wanted to warn all the mommys out there, about leaving change around, or allowing your toddler to play with change. My son swallowed a penny when he was two,and it got lodged in his throat! He couldn't breath at all. I tried slapping his back, while holding him upside down, and it wouldn't dislodge! He was turning blue, and I was panicing. I finally had to cram my hand as far as I could down his throat, took my two fingers and crabbed the penny which was stuck clockwise! Thank God I was able to yank it out with my fingers! He would have choaked to death. Please keep an eye on your kids and (Change) The best to you and your son S.
