My 3 year old will not stay in his bed. He used to have a child lock on the inside of his door, but he can open that now. What do I do???? I have tried taking away toys, spanking him, and nothing seems to work. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I reversed the doorknob on the boys' door, so the lock is on the outside. They're potty training too, so I just have to make sure their monitor is loud, so I can hear them if they need to "go".

I have the same problem, and right now, we just lock DS in his room at night.

But we're reaching the end of that, since we're potty training.

Reading Weissbluth's book, he referenced a case from a couple in a similar situation. It took 3 nights of silently returning the child to his bed.
(The #s are apalling!)
Night 1 was something like 112 returns to bed in a 1 hr time frame.
Night 2 was something like 60.
Night 3 was 140 something.
No problems after that.

Now, how anyone made it through that without killing their kid (kidding, of course), I don't know. But, if you can stand to do it, it will work.

It'll be a phase that he will grow out of if you use consistency. Just keep on taking him back to his room. yes, over and over and over again. We struggled with this for a while. We ended up getting something for my daughter to keep her interest in staying in bed long enough for her to get sleepy. We bought her a twilight turtle that displays starts on her ceiling. I also bought a nigh light to make her room less scary. The stars on the ceiling faiding on and off or blinking were enough for her to lay there and watch. There are lots of night time products you could buy and try with him. Maybe buy something really cool to him as a gift and if he doesn't stay in his bed take it away. When my daughter doesn't stay in bed I just have to threaten to take her twilight turtle away and she says she'll stay in bed. Good luck. It's hard, I understand. Hang in there.

My son use to do the same thing when he was very young. He would always end up in our bedroom in bed with us. What I did was I would go to bed with him and as soon as he fell asleep, I would leave. I finally broke him of that. To be honest that was 18 years ago, so I do not remember how many tries it took me.
Good luck
