My 2 Year Old Has Terrible Motion Sickness- Constantly Vomiting in Car

I am a traveler! constantly in the car and have tried to adapt my little one to our family life. The challenge is with our little one easily getting sick in the car- even an 1 hour drive is too much for her.
We have tried to plan during nap times. Keep air flowing in the car. Purchased a portable TV to distract. Crackers and gingerale. Pulling over and walking around as soon as we anticipate the sick coming on. We wait 1-2 hours after a meal also.
Dr. Said NO to dramamine. He recommended Benadryl to help her sleep through it. I just feel like it sounds wrong to "drug" my child but I'm tempted to try it. Please...advice would be so apreciated, I am at a loss. As I write this I am packing her "spare cloths" and hanging her hosed down pukey one on the line. Not to mention how difficult it is to watch her suffer.

I too get motion sickness. I heard of a bracelet that emits a low charge onto the skin and it is said to work. I have not tried it yet but maybe you could look into that. Good Luck!

I have heard that a natural remedy for motion sickness is Ginger. should be taken in small dose prior to going in the car. I do not remember where I heard this but a few people I have told about it did say it worked.

Hi, my daughter gets this way too. If we travel to visit family in Boston she is fine, but in local traffic which is constantly stop and go, she pukes. We do have a tv in the car too but I noticed that can make it worse if she is looking at it. My mom always told me she would get sick in the car if she was reading or something so I'm assuming watching tv would be like the same thing. I try to keep my daughter where she can see out the best and try not to stop too much. I don't really know what else u can try....just wait and see if she out grows it. I wouldn't do Benedryl

Hi D.
I was that child! It eased up as I became and adult-but cruises were definitely NOT in my future!
I have had relief from my motion sickness from a nutritional supplement. I didn't even realize it right away-I was using the products for allergies and acid reflux relief. Just noticed I wasn't getting queezy in the car if I had to look at a map or read anything-always a bad trigger previously!
Don't know if this helps.

Oh I feel horrible for both you and your daughter. I had horrible motion sickness as a child and fairly bad as an adult and my children have it too in varying degrees. The thing that stopped mine was riding in the front seat of the car, I will still get sick if I ride in the back of a car - obviously she is too young for that but I wonder if you could position her so she is in the middle of the backseat so she has a clear view out the front window and tell her to keep focused on looking out the front window. For me and my kids looking at anything inside the car or bending down in a car, riding backwards, reading, even looking backwards causes motion sickness - looking straight out the front window does help. I also find that sucking on peppermint helps as the peppermint soothes the stomach. As for long car rides and Benadryl - I would say don't feel guilty - you'd be sparing her the agony of the car ride - I remember as a child desperately wanting to sleep in the car so I wouldn't feel sick. Also be careful with her on swing sets, seesaws, any amusement park rides, boats, planes etc - those things can all be hell for us with motion sickness - when she is old enough to take Dramamine give it to her for long car rides and plane rides as well - it changed my life! She will probably outgrow some of her motion sickness but she may not. As soon as she is old enough to sit in the front let her and if you fly let her sit next to the window. Good luck!

So what kind of car do you drive and what are your driving habits I ask because my 2 year old will absolutely throw up every time my husband drives my car even 30 minutes (my car is a standard and he drives it with sudden stops and starts). When he was driving my car I would start to feel sick (I get carsick too) and as soon as I was about to say it she would throw up so I know she felt the same way. I've since forbid him from driving my car since he's not a smooth operator of a standard. It really makes it worse for me (and my little one) to have the aggressive driving style of accelerating and decelerating rapidly - a steady pace is more bearable. Also, is she riding backwards? I am guessing not but in case she is I would turn her forwards, me & my daughter both get sick backwards. I agree with previous post - do not make her look at anything in the car such as a movie or a game. I get sick if I look at the printed word in a car.

Last thing you might try - they have these wristbands that you can get that are supposed to put pressure on a part of your wrist to counter act motion sickness. If you can get them small enough and get her to wear them that might help.

Good luck!

When it is this extreme you shoudl try and talk to your doctor again..you know they think us mothers know nothing! explain that it is bad, an d this coudl lead to many many htings. My sister has this and has meds in it for airplanes!

Maybe look for a support group on Yahoo of parents with kids with the same thing (or any group) as talking to others in the small rocky boat can lead to more suggestions.I am sure there is a small dose of draminine for her size..good luck and get your car cleaned often!

My 4 year old daughter too suffers from motion sickness. My husband suffered from this as well as a child so he has given me lots of insight to help our daughter. So far what you have been doing is good. But also limit what types of food/drink you give your daughter before the car ride. No milk or juice. Salty items are good:crackers, pretzels etc. We use a spit up bowl now too. It sits in between our carseats in the car. So if she needs it our daughter can grab it. Your daughter, if she isn't already, will be able to tell you soon when she is going to "spit up". We also use a portable DVD player to let our daughter watch movies on long rides. This helps (sometimes).I know it's tough but hang in there. Hope this helped.

I don't necessarily agree with giving her Benadryl to help your daughter sleep through the car ride but I can say when we went on vacation to Punta Cana in the winter my doctor recommended Benadryl for the plane ride and boat ride if I was worried about sickness because there is an ingredient in Benadryl that mimics that of dramamine which my daughter was too young to take. She used it and had no side effects, and did not get ill, Benadryl is completely safe and if it is going to prevent her from throwing up in the car I would say try it, espcially if nothing else is working for her.

I went through the exact same problem! After years of this, we found out our daughter was vomiting because of lactose based products she had prior to going on the ride. Once we eliminated these products, we had no problems!

You could try the wrist bands that apply pressure to the pressure points. Might not work but certainly couldn't help. I agree with your reluctance to use Benadryl - aside from the side effects, it's just treating the symptom and not the cause. While the motion of the car may be setting your child off, the problem is probably going on all the time. I agree with several posters about a nutritional imbalance, particularly Joanne H. A lot of children (adults too) develop acid reflux and lactose intolerance because of imbalances in our diet. Even if we think we are eating healthy, our foods just don't contain the full amount of nutrients anymore. They are grown in depleted soils and are deficient in vitamins, minerals and trace elements - even the organic foods are often grown in soils that are deficient or where crop rotation doesn't take place. So we all wind up missing some key elements, and that kicks off the stomach and digestive issues. There is a fantastic nutritional supplement called Now For Kids which is safe, patented (therefore unique and guaranteed) and manufactured here in the US under strict quality control conditions. I use the adult version and I have a ton of friends who have their kids on the children's product. If you're interested, let me know and I will tell you how you can get the product. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain! Good luck!

I have a five yr old that has always had the same problem. I didnt want to "drug" her either! I found the Sea-Band works great!! I just keep them in the car and it has worked EVERY time! You can get them at any drug store and it's worth it. They have them on the website for CVS. Like $11 a piece but well worth it! They have kids and adult sizes. Good luck and Happy Travels!!

My mother used to get terrible motion sickness all the time. Couldn't sit in the back seat of a car, couldn't go on a boat, etc. I know I'm talking about an adult here, but she got these wrist bands, kind of like tennis sweat bands, that have a pastic piece that presses on a pressure point on the inside of your wrist. Not exactly sure how it works, but it did. She wore them all the time when traveling, and she traveled the world, and never had a problem again. Not sure if they make them in kids sizes but I have seen the adult ones in the drug store. Check it out maybe it will work for your little one.

This is like it was when I was little! If I moved my head side to side or up and down at all and I was in the rear seat I would puke. Not a good thing with other siblings in the car beside me. I am 46 now and still have a bit of motion sickness. There is a natural remedy I have used to help me it is called Motioneaze and you can find it at:
http://www.motioneaze.com/
this is what is said on their website...
Stop motion sickness even after it starts.
Don’t let motion spoil your day. Relief is a drop away with MotionEaze. Just dab one drop behind each ear and feel like yourself in 5 minutes.
Feel the difference
Relief in 5 minutes
No drowsiness
A dab behind each ear
All natural
Safe for kids

Maybe this can help, I sure hope so. Good luck.
