HI,
My first son is about to turn 2 in September and doesn't talk much at all. He has about 10-15 words but doesn't use them consistently. He tries really hard at saying words...like 'cat, open, etc...he can say 'c' and then 'at' but will not put them together. same with 'open' He'll say 'o' and then 'pen' but won't put the word together and say 'open'. He seems to have a high frustration level because of it and I have worked on baby sign language so he can sign some things....any suggestions as to how to help him talk more? I have a call into the Early Intervention Alliance of Ramsey in hopes that we can start speech therapy. Thanks!

I am having the same problem with my two year old so if you get any good advice please let me know. MMMM is how most words come out but she doesn't seem concerned unless I get it right away. I try to get her to say the words before I give her the object and nothing is working except the sign language( I started to teach her early on). She does have a big sister and I know that she does most of the talking for both of them but she has gotten better since I talked to her.

There is a wide range of normal in language development. That said, another resource you might contact is the Early Childhood Family Education system through your local school district. Since you live in Shoreview, Roseville is probably the school program to call. They can help you by sending out someone to check your child's language development .

Here is a link to the ECFE website for Roseville, but each public school system in MN has this program.

Good luck.

IT'S TOO EARLY TO WORRY! When my son was in for his 2 yr check up (back in December) he wasn't talking either and I was a bit concerned because my friend had an 18 month old talking up a storm but she is a girl. My pediatrician said not to worry and asked if he was really good w/ his motor skills--he was (my friend's daughter, not so good w/ hers). The doc said he was so busy working on his motor skills language was taking a back seat. My son is now 2 1/2 and has been talking non-stop for the past 3-4 weeks. It happened so fast. The big difference between him and my older son (who began talking right around 2), is his words are very clear and very deliberate. Last night at dinner he told my husband, "Daddy, I want you to buy me the purple puppy." (referring to a toy). It was amazing! That is a very long sentence for a child who hasn't been talking that long.

We went through the frustration phase too. Don't worry even though I know it's hard not to. Give it a few more months. I think as long as he is trying to say words you are OK.

Every child does things on their own time. I have many friends with 2 year olds that don't talk yet. I wouldn't worry about it.

I have a 2.5 year old boy also that talks less then yours does. When he turned 18months and went to doctor for check up the doctor told me to call Kenny kids. My son now goes to Sister Kenny kids in Coon Rapids every friday for 45 minutes and its seeming to help. He's putting more constants with his vowels unlike before he started and now he is 29 months and says a few words and he's getting closer to saying more. Like cheerios, he says eeros which a month ago it was a grunt and a point. I'd call Sister Kenny kids and do an evaluation with them.

I don't really have any advice for you but wanted to let you know that you're definitely not alone. My son is 21 months and has very few words. He understands everything that we say to him and tries very hard to copy what we say to him but just can't get the words out. As of now I'm going to wait until his 2 year well check to talk to his doctor about it.

does he like bubbles??? my son will be 2 at the end of aug. and bubbles made him talk.... he had to say something using his "big boy words" not signs and I'd blow bubbles.... wanting him to say....mommy for instance if he would say "muh" I'd blow one time then...eventually he started... also when he was in speech they played a game with him walking around the hospital...he would have to point and say "buh" to get to turn, and they'd take him wherever he wanted to go...he loved it, and in 3 mo. his language went from 3 words to 30+...(now, I can't even count) I like games, it makes talking fun! Good Luck!

Hi J.,
My son wasn't a talker until about 25.5 months old. My family gave me much unneeded stress in my life when they noted he wasn't talking. Not only that, my ECFE class infant teachers brought it up 3 different times. Twice around Christmas and once more around his birthday (which was in the following Feb.). But my instincts told me to hang on and not to push it. My son has a big sister and his sister was doing A LOT of the talking and interjecting for him. I explained this to everyone who told me there was something amiss with my son. Sure enough, about 2 months after he turned 2 the Chatterbox came alive. He started with simple words, then progressed to intricate sentences that he does now (at 2.5). I've been told boys take more time with speech (and many other things for that matter) development. Good luck!

Just wanted to let you know that at 1 year and 11 months, my daughter only said a handful of words. At two years and one month, her vocabulary more than doubles and now she is two years five months and talks in sentences. I was really worried too when we were coming up on that two year mark, but she really took off after that and yours may too. Sorry I don't have much advice other than that, and to say, just keep talking to him, stimulating all the time. Speak clearly, praise what he does do, and use every opportunity to talk about food, colors, animals, whatever. Good luck!
