My 12-Month Old Doesn't like Milk

My 12-month old daughter has been breast fed exclusively since she was born. We are now trying to wean her and actually need her to be completely wean before mid-July since my husband and I are going on a cruise and leaving the kids with Grandma. I have tried milk but she just spits it out. She does drink the formula though. I have mixed milk with formula and she will drink it but never by itself. I recently tried soy milk. she seems to like that a little better. any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Mine had a hard time with the milk at first too. Keep mixing it with the formula for now and then try to ween off the formula. Just put a little less in for a couple of days until she gets used to the milk. Also,my doctors told me that as long as she is eatting lots yogurt and cheese, don't worry so much about the milk. Just keep trying and eventually they will drink it. My younger daughter is now 16 months and still will not drink milk out of a sippy cup but she will drink it out of my glass if I am drinking milk at meals or whenever. So don't give up and don't stress about it too much. Just make sure you include other dairy products into her diet and she will get all the nutrients she needs.

I agree with Cari on this. It will probably take you a couple weeks - you have to be really patient with the mixing/weaning! 1/4 milk for 3-4 days, then 1/3 milk for 3-4 days, then 1/2 milk... 2/3 milk... until it's all milk.

But -other than the expense- there's nothing wrong with her drinking formula so if she really refuses don't worry about it too much.

Our son's lactose intolerant so we tried soy. After doing some researching, I'm not sure I'm okay with what they DON'T know about how the plant hormones can affect development. So, we're using rice milk or almond milk and only soy when there's really no other alternative.

And welome to Kansas! We're transplants from SoCal ourselves and just love it here... feel free to drop me a note if you're still trying to find anything. We've been here in Olathe a year and a half now.

Hi A.,

My son too was only breastfed. We began to wean him by giving him Goat's Milk. You can find it at Wholefoods. Goat's Milk is more like human milk and might have a better taste than cows milk. We fed him Goat's Milk for about a month and then just last week transitioned to cows.
No problems.

Good Luck!

Have you tried giving her whole milk at a bit warmer temperature? Sometimes it is the cold that make kids refuse to drink it. Hope this helps. Good luck!

My son didn't like milk either when I started him on it, so
I switched him to "Good Start 2" formula for toddlers for
a bit, then went half milk/half formula and gradually reduced
the formula out completely. It only took about a month and
now he's 2 and would drink milk all day if I let him!
It worked for me.

I nursed also, and had a hard time transitioning to whole milk. It made them have bad diarrhea. I had to use Vita-milk for many months, and then to whole milk. However, I recently visited the Shatto Milk Farm (son's school field trip), located about 40 miles north of KC. They do not give their cows any of the growth hormones. Leroy Shatto (owner) said that he's gotten many calls and letters from folks who at one point couldn't drink milk, or were lactose intolerant, to NOW they can drink Shatto milk. I would try Shatto milk. It's a little more expensive, but you get $1.50 back when you return the glass bottle. Plus they have wonderful flavors: choco, strawberry, orange, banana, root beer. They are having an open house this Sat 11-3. It's really a great place, and we had fun on the field trip. I'm planning on taking the kids up on Sat. God bless you! It's not always easy going from nursing to milk...I remember.

Soy milk is EXCELLENT. I'd just let her have it and from time to time try her on some milk just to keep introducing it. But if you can and are willing to mix it that's great. You can even do smoothies with a little milk and fruit blended well. Variety is the spice of life as they say :)
