We have a "real" mattress for our pack and play.
I am not sure where you live, but Kids and Cribs in Wayne sells them for around $30 dollors or so.
My daughter is a great sleeper at home, but anytime we go away with her, we face nights of exhaustion because she refuses to sleep in her pack and play (and won't sleep in bed with us either!) We have tried using the pack and play at home for naps, or just for fun playtime to make her associate it with good things, but while she will play happily, napping or sleeping at night just never happens. We will even rock her to sleep until she is completely out, place her gently in the pack and play and she will wake up 15 to 20 minutes later crying. My guess is that she doesn't like the hard matress - has anyone found a good mattress that fits in a pack and play? Or does a truly portable crib (with a real mattress) exist? We rented a crib last weekend when we went to NYC for the weekend, and she slept great, but that isn't an option for most of our trips. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated!!!

I'd love to know the answer to this too. I have a 10-month-old and we are going away on vaca this summer, and i am dreading trying to get him to sleep in the pack-and-play. Sorry I don't have any advice for you, but I am curious to see the responses!
I purchased a mattress which fits into a pack and play at Baby Depot about a year ago. It is thicker and looks more comfortable than the standard mattress that comes with the pack and play. The mattress was really inexpensive around $10. I have to be honest - I haven't used it yet. It was cheap and looked like it could work.
