Hi !! I am breastfeed my baby and she is now 6 months old. The pediatrician has prescribed her a multivitamin with iron and flouride because he says that after 6 months the breastmilk doesnt have the adequate vitamins and iron that she will be needing. The problem I have is that the vitamin tastes AWFUL !! I cant bring myself to force her to take it. She obviously doesnt like it and I tasted it myself and it is the most horrible thing I've ever tasted !!! Do any of you wonderful mothers have a multivitamin that you can recommend that doesnt taste like corroded metal? LOL !! Thanks I really appreciate any pointers !

What can I do next?

Shaklee's VitaLea infant mix - it's fabulous! Go to www.shaklee.net/unlimited and type "vitalea" in the search engine. If you decide to try it, send the "contact us" and email and let them know that K. C referred you. They do not put fluoride in their vitamins as it's actually harmful to you. Good luck!

Change your pediatrician. This one obviously does not know that fluoride is far from safe for humans. Also, if you are eating well, then your breast milk should be ample for the baby.
You said "prescribed" so this is a prescription vitamin? Sorry but so many doctors these days are just drug pushers. They have good intentions but they are trained to prescribe drugs. They are wooed by well trained pharmaceutical company reps who know just how to influence them. We have to be vigilant and take responsibility for our own health. Prescription drugs don't fix the problems underlying the conditions. They just manage the symptoms, which is highly convenient for the drug companies, because it keeps us on them.
I just can't imagine why a doctor would start this process of "pill popping" so early.
Please research the truth on fluoride and on vaccinations while you are at it.
Also follow your intuition. Deep down, you know what is best for your child, and you know she doesn't need what he is giving her.
Love,
Z

This was prescribed for my daughter when she was little and then not for my son. Both had the same dr. I think maybe she just changed her mind about it. Both turned out equally healthy, teeth included. We mixed it with water and juice for my daugter.

That sounds crazy, about the flouride. For the iron did he did blood work on her? I used to take the iron myself while I was breast feeding bc my doc said while I'm nursing he wanted me to stay on the same vitamins he had me on while I was pregnant which included so fe iron. As for your child I don't like the liquid iron it stains your teeth. Which was a life long thing till they have all this teeth whiting these days. Actually I'd change pedi's if I were you, find one thats not working too close with the drug companies.

Forget the multivitamin. Your pediatrician should have at least done an iron count on your baby before she blindly prescribed a multivitamin. Teff is the highest food source of iron. You can get it from Whole Foods or a health food store (call first). Doctors are not required to take any courses on nutrition and they are ill-informed in this area. If you are giving your baby any solid food, try sprinkling a small amount of teff on your baby's porridge. One of my favorite books is Super Baby Food, by Ruth Yarron. It is a wonderful resource and the author has done a tremendous amount of research. Even if you don't make your own baby food, it has a guide of nutritional value of each vitamin and mineral and the best sources. I have three children and have never had a doctor prescribe flouride. Consider switching pediatricians. Good Luck!

Hi,
I'm not an expert by any means, but I did go through this when my baby was 4 months old. I cried because they tasted so bad and I couldn't stand the thought of giving them to her. But I researched it and first there were none that tasted better, and second it did say they don't get as much iron or vitamin D while being breastfed. But I only used them for a few months, by the time I went back for her checkup they didn't mention them again and she was already eating some baby food and cereal with iron, so I pretty much stopped then. I would give them to her while I was feeding her cereal and follow up with breastmilk, and I would give them to her about every other day. She did fine and just shake the vitamin up really good and it doesn't taste sooo concentrated with iron...I don't know, good luck! It's something healthy for her...just like shots...oh and try to put the dropper as far back and to the side of the mouth as you can so they aren't getting it right on their tongue and they can just swallow with less taste. Easier said then done, I know.

Does she take breastmilk in a bottle? You can try putting half a dose in one bottle and the rest in another. Honestly though, I didn't worry too much about vitamins until my kids were well into table foods/solids. And if you're still taking prenatal vitamins (as you should be when breastfeeding), then I disagree with your pediatrician (I know I'm not a doctor)...your baby gets enough through your breastmilk.

FYI - I have breastfed 3 babies...my daughter, 7 months, first son - 17 months, second son - 20 months...all extremely healthy!

Hi A.!
I know that doctors have wisdom, but to me, I think giving a breastfed baby a multivitamin is RIDICULOUS! I honestly think it's all a gimick to make money! Breastmilk is the most PERFECT food for your baby, and it supplies her with EVERYTHING she needs. I've breastfed all 4 of my babies, and I've never given them a multivitamin(even though their doctors suggested it). So don't force it on her. When she starts eating solids she'll get more vitamins naturally. Something else you should know is this. Flouride is a poison(one of the key ingredients in rat poison and insecticides), and you should really think twice before giving it to your daughter. I hope that this helps you in your decision! Good luck and God bless!!!!!

My babies (now 16 & 20 yrs. old) were eating baby food by this age which gave them their nutrients. Both of them were very healthy, still are.
