Mucus in Stool

Hello!
my daughter has had mucous in her stool for quite some time now...
i was convinced she had some sort of milk allergy (i switched from breastfeeding to similac after three weeks) and brought her to the pediatrician several times because of it..(i know they thought i was a crazy first time mom!)
the ped explained this as normal as my daughter does not have any other symptoms to support an allergy (no vomiting, diarrhea, blood in the stool, rash, etc...)
it still bothers me though when i see the mucous.....
has anyone experienced this?

What can I do next?

I agree with all PP except for Lisa H! They have no other way to get rid of mucus! :( And I do agree that breastmilk is best; however, formula is used by millions of women and babies with no concerns for the baby's welfare. I just don't want anyone trying to make you feel guilty! :) Good luck!

My daughter had this for a couple of weeks. (she is 4) We happened to be a her urologist appt, he told me not to worry that it was probably just a virus. It went away on its own with no other symptoms. I hope this helps...

Hi. I experienced the same thing with my daughter. She had mucus in her stool until she was almost 1. I kept taking dirty diapers to have it checked and they said, no blood, so it is okay. I never thought it was normal, but she seemed happy otherwise. I did continue breastfeeding until she was about 12-13 months and once she switched to mostly regular food and regular milk, I didn't notice it anymore. Hope this helps :)

my baby had this as well, but he was sick alot. no other way to get the nasty phlem out except there! i think it's pretty normal, but it may hang on for a couple weeks if your baby had been sick or had a cold. not sure how old she is, but it seems to be pretty common in younger babies.

My son (breasfed) also had mucus in his stool. It was no big deal and went away after he started to eat more solid and table foods. Just let her body do its thing. =)

The ped explained this as normal because the intestines are always producing mucous. Breast feeding is easier to digest the harder stool is because of the formula. If you are not going to breast feed any longer she will get used to the formula.
It is normal.

We went through the same thing... My daughter was mostly breast fed and had mucus in her stools for months... Doctor gave us the same advice... We did have her stool tested just in case... Everything was okay... She is now eight months old and as we started to give her more and more solids, the mucus stools have gone away...

I think it's normal. Does she have a stuffy nose or phlegmy cough? If so, they really can't get the mucous out the way we do: nose blowing/coughing & spitting (yuk!). So it passes through the bowel.

***Gotta say I agree that using formula or breast feeding is a mother's PERSONAL CHOICE and I for O., am sick of the holier-than-thou attitudes displayed on this site trying to get mom's to feel guilty. C'mon ladies---enough!****

I don't know how old your daughter is, but my daughter started passing mucus in her stool at about six months when I introduced oatmeal baby cereal. It went away after I stopped giving her the oatmeal cereal, and then came back at around age 1 when I would give her just a couple of cheerios! I researched the topic and learned that mucous in the stool is often a sign of a food intolerance (as opposed to an allergy). My daughter outgrew it by around 18 months and now eats oats with no problem, but in her case, I am convinced that is what did it.

Why would you switch from breastfeeding to synthetic formula. Don't worry about the mucus she's fine. You saw the dr and he ruled things out. I'd be more concerned for the formula than the mucus. Breastmilk is always best!
