My daughter had MRSA several times....when she was a toddler. I was taking her to a mom's morning out day care at a church two days a week so that she could play with kids her own age. Every time that she would get a lesion I would keep her out of there until she was totally healed, and the next time that she would go there, I would pick her up and she would have another lesion or two! Our pediatrician was prescribing Keflex, and then after a visit to the ER at Arnold Palmer, they added Augmentin.....because it kept reoccurring, I ended up having to go to an infectious disease consultant. By the time that I went there, I was steam cleaning carpets, washing towels & sheets in hot water and bleach, washing the dog once a week and the kid every day with Betadine! The infectious disease Dr. told me several things.....1st...she was on the WRONG antibiotics,....keflex and augmentin ARE NOT EFFECTIVE AGAINST MRSA. She gave me a list of 4 that are, I can't remember all of them on the list but one was Chlindamycin (sp?), and another started with "z", but is not a "z-pack". I have the list if you need me to, I can dig it out at home and let you know...just pm me for it. 2nd....she told me the self imposed protocol of using the Betadine was a good idea but encouraged me to stop using Betadine (because of the iodine exposure) and start using "hibicleanse". She told me that is what she scrubs in with before a surgery, and to use it on my daughter ANY TIME that she has any open scratches, bug bites, scrapes etc.... and then once a week under normal conditions. Once her antibiotics were switched up and I started the new bathing routine, we have not had a problem since! I hope that this helps....good luck with your dad's care, and God Bless!
