Moving to DePere Area Soon

My husband just accepted a job transfer so we'll be moving from Wausau to the DePere area as soon as we can sell our house. Which in the current market, may be awhile! But in the meantime, in case a quicker sale pleasantly surprises us, I starting some research on the DePere and surrounding area. Anyone living there... recommendations on areas for looking for a house... day care options, school districts, parks, bike trails, etc.

My husband's office is on the south side of DePere, east of the river. I plan to continue to work primarily from home, but will now likely be going into my company's office in Appleton once or twice a week. So we're also considering Wrightstown as a location. Basically, because I work from home, I do need high speed internet available which likely means being in or near town.

What can I do next?

I heard of a great daycare in De Pere called Caterpillers or something similar. Good luck with the move.

Hey J., I live in Hollandtown, grew up in Kaukauna and have friends that live and grew up in Wrightstown (they are all good people). It is a nice quiet town if that is what you are looking for. I don't know the bike trails, ect. that you are looking for but I'm sure that it won't take you to long to find some. There is one daycare that I am aware of, I don't remember the name but the next time I drive by I'll get it and send it to you and any other info I might be able to find. I live in the Kaukauna school district but am thinking about sending my son to Wrightstown for school (which for me is the same distance as Kaukauna). I like the thought of smaller classes, less of the "big city" problems, not that I think Wrightstown is the perfect school, there is no such thing! If a kid wants to find trouble they will. LOL
Good luck on your move and everything else that follows

Welcome to DePere! I have lived here, East Depere, for 10 years now and really love the area. I have my family in the Caterpillar Club Day Care in East DePere. The ladies are all very caring and really help my daughter to grow in her development. I have been very happy with them.....if you end up putting your daughter there let them know you heard it from me. :-) The DePere Schools are also a great place to raise your kids. I noticed that someone else told you about the wonderful trails in the area. They are nice. DePere also has a cute little bookstore called Butterfly Books that has just children books. They do a lot of fun classes for kids and their families. The Kress Family Library is also on the East side of DePere. It is a nice place to find good books and it is very close to the bike trail. Good luck selling your home, and I know there are lots of houses on the market in this area. One last thing....there is a group called Strollerstrides that I was a part of during the summer. I think they are still doing it during the winter, but you would have to look into a bit. It was a great workout while pushing your kids in a stroller.

I wouldn't worry about high speed internet... we live just outside of W. DePere (town of Lawrence) in a country-like setting and high speed internet isn't an issue at all. DePere does have the best schools in the area, so you'll be very happy with that when your daughter is school age. We live in a great subdivision with about 15 houses and 30+ kids, all younger couples, with neighborhood parties quite often! As far as daycare, there are plenty of "centers" and Moms who stay at home that finding good care shouldn't be a problem! Good luck with the selling of your home! One of our neighbors recently put their home on the market (I'd say not even a month ago), and she just emailed to say they got an offer! (there is one other house here that's for sale, and 2 empty lots)

I live in Green Bay, but I do know that East De Pere Schools are supposed to be particularly good. One of my husband's colleagues moved to Ledgeview just so that their children could go to East De Pere High School--I think for their music program. There is also the new Wisconsin International School that just opened near St. Norbert's this year and it is supposed to be fantastic (starting in preschool and working through the international baccalaureate program). I've heard Wrightstown schools are also good. Another good daycare, where my children go, is Encompass Education and Care. They are a non-profit daycare (with numerous locations--there is one in De Pere) that is nationally certified through NAEYC (National Association of Education of the Young Child). The CP Center in Allouez (right off of 172) has an inclusive daycare that is also certified.

There are several trails around in the area. Our family particularly likes the Fox River Trail and the East River Trail. I know there are some further south too. Near and in De Pere, we like Voyageur Park and one a little further north on the river (near a Dairy Queen), Greene Park in Allouez, and other parks in Green Bay. If you are looking for a doctor, there is a pediatric clinic on Red Bird Circle in De Pere (also where my kids go), with several docs that we have found to be terrific.

We've been in the area about 10 years and have really tried to get to know the area for what we are interested in, in particular. If you have any other questions, feel free to email.
