Hi,
My husband just got an offer and we are going to move to Atlanta this summer. This is totally out of the blue and I am worried about getting my 4-yr-old daughter into a pre-K program, since I have basically no notice. Does anyone know of in-town places with openings (probably in Buckhead or midtown, possibly around Druid Hills)? She is in a wonderful cooperative here, so I would consider that but would need a babysitting coop for the 14-month-old.
On another note, what about good neighborhoods in good elem school districts? (Again, in town.) I have been looking in Jackson, Brandon, Smith, and Fernbank areas.
Thank you!!

What can I do next?

HI I live off of N Druid Hills and I know that there's a church advertising state pre-k openings. I'll get back to you tomorrow, but try Brookhaven Christian Church.

I hope I don't offend anyone here by saying this and if I do, I apologize but we'll have to agree to disagree, but the only intown elementary school I would consider sending my child to would be Morningside. It depends on your needs and preferences, but I am not a fan of the Dekalb school system in general (my step daughter attends a Dekalb elementary school and my sons attend Cobb County schools and the difference is drastic). We love intown living and considered blending our family intown but the public school options are not yet optimal enough for the quality of education we want to provide our children. Inman Middle school is wonderful! Morningside if fantastic! But there is not a high school intown I'd even consider sending my oldest son to. As far as pre-k programs, you might do a search on line and check with all the intown churches and consider the Montessori schools. The Children's School is incredible! And it's in midtown but it's hard to get in because of demand! If you decide to move OTP, let me know and I can help you there for sure! Good luck! - L.

I don't know about the school district you are in (although you are in a nice area), but you have excellent teaching sources in your area. Check out Fernbank Museum and astronomy lab, Jimmy carter library, The High museum, and oh God, there are lots more. Good luck, and Welcome to Atlanta!

Hi there.

Our 3-year-old son goes to Druid Hills United Methodist Preschool (DHUMP.org) and we all love it. The director is wonderful, and his teachers have been really great. I don't know if there's space available, but it's definitely worth looking into.

Also, we live in the Fernbank district and are very excited about all the positive things we've heard. Every parent we've talked to who has/had a child in school there has had nothing but great things to say, and the test scores are outstanding.

Good luck with the move!
Jen

P.S. I lived in Boston from 1992-94 and loved it -- except for the winters :-)
