Moving Supplies

So, we will probably be using a moving company provided by my husband's new job. We will not have to pack anything. My question is, do we need to save sheets, blankets, and other soft items to help cushion breakable items for the movers? My girlfriend who just moved, mentioned this to me. However, don't moving companies have supplies for this specifically. I've got a ton of sheets and blankets to get rid of if we won't need them.

What can I do next?

Once you know for sure a moving company is going to move you (you are soooooo lucky as I bust my hump packing today!), call them and ask if they need anything like that. I would suspect they DO NOT. They have moving pads for that.

In fact, we are renting a dozen when we get the rental truck.

Start getting rid of unwanted items NOW! Craigslist for the big items, a yard sale if you have time and then donate. Remember, less than nice sheets, blankets, and towels can go to animal shelters. :)

Did I mention how lucky you are and how jealous I am?? :)

I'd just call them and ask. If you don't know who will be moving you could take a sample "poll" and ask random movers your question. I'd think they all do about the same thing.

second hand from a friend - yes they have everything they need, but she did mention they even wrapped some of her individual shoes in bubble wrap and put them in a box with her toaster - LOL!
Couldn't hurt to call the company just to make sure:)

Hi S.-

As Margie mentioned...they pack EVERYTHING! When my folks moved to england...mom had a big coffee maker going for the packers...they received it on other side of pond weeks later complete with moldy grounds!! YUCK!

Also, do have someone watch as they pack...on my move back from germany I found that all my lace curtains were stained...I have no clue what leaked on them...wish they had been packed in plastic...

IF you are an entertainer...and have 'booze'...take it with...or better yet have a HUGE party before ya go...they 'may' offer to pack it...(they are not supposed to I don't think) but often it will not make it to destination!

best luck!

We are military.
They supply everything.
And if you touch it while they are packing and put something in a box, then they are not liable for the breakage. So let them do the work.

I pull everything off the walls and put like things together,.
So all the breakable things come out of the bedrooms and bathrooms and into the dining room to be packed in a dishpack.
All pictures off the walls and in one spot to be packed in picture packs.

THey do the beds last, but sometimes we have stayed in a hotel the nights while they were packing, it is just easier.

Pack what you are bringing first and get it out of the house. Packers don't always read the signs that say do not pack.
Take out the garbage, they will pack it.
Make sure when they take apart the beds they tape the screws to the bed frame.
If they take a bed apart they have to put it up on the other end.
You can have them unpack, I usually don't.
Offer plenty of soda, lemonade, pizza for lunch,
Hve an adult come over to help monitor them. Let someone be upstairs and you down.
Pack your own jewelry,,they will pack it and I have never had any issues, but sometimes pieces get stolen.

If you are not doing a door to door then have them crate the household goods at your house, otherwise they will take it to a warerhouse, rehome it there and then put it on another truck to deliver it.
I have many things from other people because of this and they have some of my stuff. Like my hubby's ladder, he is still mad about that, even though we were paid for it eons ago.

Good luck, we have moved 7 times with a new mover each time. Don't use Bekins.

They will have all supplies if your husband's job is hiring them to do the moving, including blankets, bubble wrap, etc. Enjoy it...it's nice to have them do it all. Stay out of their way as they move quick and they don't want you to pack anything they are taking on the truck for liability reasons with damages. We had good luck with nothing getting broken, but it happens on occasion and they will reimburse you.

If there is anything like a baby book or wedding album that you want to ensure isn't damaged or lost, take it with you, but like a previous poster said, anything you don't want packed put in your car on the packing day as they will pack anything in their path, including the garbage cans!

When you get there, be sure to check every drawer and compartment on things as they are very space efficient and often tuck things within other things for packing.

When we moved we did not have to supply anything to the movers they should have everything they would need. One tip I will give you is have an inventory or your items and the condition they are in ie: any dents, dings, scratches that your furniture might already have. Take pictures also, this way should anything be damaged during the move you have proof of what was there before the move and what resulted from the move. Good luck and just sit back and enjoy not having to pack up.
