Moving from 2 Naps to 1 - Allen, TX

My 16th month is showing signs that she needs to move to one nap rather than two. What is the best way to make the transition. I have been moving the morning nap back every few days and making that nap long (11-1 currently). She still needs some afternoon rest so she is lying down again from 3-4. Is this the way to do it, or should I shorten up the morning nap, and make the afternoon earlier a longer? Thanks for your insights!

I agree with the others, it is the morning nap that you need to start moving up. The best thing I did was to take the kids out of the house in the morning in order to keep them going until I was ready for them to go to sleep. Or have a play mate. Try to feed lunch around 11:30 and down for nap around 12. She should likely sleep until around 3, and then may be ready for an earlier bed time, but try not to make it too early, or she may wake up earlier too, which then means that she cant go until after lunch before she lays down. I think my kids slept from about 7:30pm, until 7:30 am, and then napped for 2-3 hours in the afternoon at that age. Heck, my 25 month son still does that. Good luck..I love this transition, it enables you to do so much more in the morning with them. Have fun ~A.~

I had a surprisingly easy transition with my son. He was on a schedule of sleep 10-11:30, eat at noon, sleep at 2:30 - 3:30 or 4:00. I just kept him up and busy one day, and fed him lunch at 11. Eating lunch gave him a "second wind' and I put him down at noon and he slept for 3 hours. Over the next few days I shifted it back slightly, and now he eats between 1130 and 1200, and starts his nap at 1:30, sleeping for 2-3 hours. Didn't really have any problems with crankiness or the new schedule, but he had also been "signalling" a readiness to go to one nap a day (by often not sleeping during his second nap) for a couple weeks before the transition. Good luck!

Try to keep her up until lunch and then 30 minutes after lunch, put her down for her nap. While transitioning, I fed lunch at 11:30 and had him down by 12:15 or so. Eventually, he could stay up longer and longer and nap from about 1:30-4. Good luck!!!

I would shorten the morning nap and bump up the afternoon. Make bedtime 1/2 to an hour earlier until she gets used to it. Good luck!

I always let my daughter and son dictate their naps within reason of course. For example my daughter would get very cranky everyday at 6 in the evening so I made sure she napped between 2-4. any later than 4 and she would want to sleep until 7. So I used there natural patterns or habbits and tweaked them a little to make a suitable nap schedule.
