Mouth Breathing - Allergies

Hello! I am new to mamapedia. I found this site when looking for relief for allergies! I saw a lot of great answers for other allergy questions.

At night when I am sleeping, I find that I am breathing through my mouth instead of my nose. I wake up with a dry mouth. VERY irritating. I use Allegra for my allergies and I use the sinus rinse recommended by my ENT.

Is there anything you can recommend to help clearing my sinuses so that I don't breath through my mouth? Or am I the only person that experiences this?

What can I do next?

Using a humidifier can help keep allergens down inside. They do like a dry environment. I also find that all the allergy meds dry out my sinuses and throat because they are made to dry up runny mucus. If you are not having runny eyes and nose then you may be using the wrong meds.

I get dried out nose and I have minimal saliva after taking those pills. If I am having sinus pain I take real Sudafed. Just half a dose, then the snot and stuff become thinner and I have less trouble swallowing the thick super glue stuff trying to drain.

I find that sleeping slightly inclined helps too. I use a couple of pillows and am nearly sitting up sometimes. That really helps the drainage go down too.

I suffer from sinuses as well I take sinus medication as well as allergy medication. First the allergy float into your nose when the little hairs in your noses cannot trap the foreign objects you sneeze causing an allergic reaction to spread through your nose to your throat to your ears often causing cold like symptoms.

Your sinus swell because you keep blowing your nose to get the little objects out but what you are really doing is making the membrane of your nose swell causing conjestion in your nasal passage. This is why you wake up breathing through your mouth instead of your nose.

Make a bath of hot water and place a spoonful of vicks and it. Make sure it melts put a towel over your head and inhale it. It opens your nasal passages make sure not to go out after this, you want to go to bed like this. I also put vicks in my nose and on my temples. Make sure it is real vicks and not a cheap thing.

Third if you don't like the nasal pots you can use natural sea salt saline drops sold at the store, or put some warm water in the palm of your hands with some salt and sniff it in one nostril at a time to drain the muscus. Avoid blowing your nose if you can.

Welcome to mamapedia!!!

I would say - keep a clean house. I don't know what you are allergic to. However, I would make sure I kept my dust levels down.

Vacuum and dust frequently.

I use Zyrtec. Have you tried another allergy med?
I too use the sinus rinse. I find that it helps me A LOT!!! When I don't use it, is when I wake up in the middle of the night with a dry mouth.

If it continues? I would see my ENT to see if I have a sinus infection.

GOOD LUCK!

Neti-pots are great. You should rinse with one every night.

I have no suggestions but you're not the only one with this condition. I also wake up with a dry mouth some of the time. I don't know why it's just some of the time. Perhaps it's my sleep position.

try a sinus rinse ( or a neti-pot)...I've been using athe sinus rinse since April and it's worked woners for my sinuses and clogged ears...and accordng to my ENT you can actually use tap water and when the premixed packets run out, table salt or kosher salt are fine...good luck

You could try a different allergy med, or a combination of more than one to see if the side effects are different.
The ones with -D have sudafed. There's also ibuprofen or steroid and non-steroid sprays which can unswell the inside of the nose(such as flonase, rhinocort, or astelin). The stick-on things that pull your nose open from the outside. Allergy shots, honey, or avoidance of allergens that might reduce the need for pills in the future. Take a shower before bed or use pillow covers to reduce the amount of allergens you're sleeping with. I think there's a mouthwash called biotin to counteract dry mouth.
I use an extra pillow and have a large glass of water to drink from if I wake up coughing.
