Mount Vernon

Can you spend all day there? I want to take my kids on the boat ride from National Harbor to Mount Vernon on Friday. We are staying for a few nights at National Harbor and I just figure this will be a good chance to take this trip. My concern is that the boat leaves the Harbor at 1110 and doesn't get back until 505. So I figure with maybe 30 minutes travel time on each side, we will be at Mount Vernon for four hours. Is there enough to keep kids (who LOVE history) entertained for that long? Hubby will be at work that day and would be getting to the hotel about the same time we'd be getting back.

This was the one spot on my summer trips list that we didn't get to travel to!

Awesome!! Thanks Cheryl!! I figure when you add the boat ride in it will be a GREAT day for them all around! I just wanted to make sure there was enough to do. I'm not sure I have ever been!

Absolutely. I do little trips for my birthday and we've been there and to Monticello and brought DD both times. DD was not quite 3 when we went to Mount Vernon. That also has a museum that shows George Washington as a young man through his old age. Heck, you could spend all day and still not see it all. Just put someone in line for the tour and let the kids run and trade off. We let DD run around while we waited in line. Also, go check out the pole barn and farm. Watch for loose sheep. :)

It rained the day we went and we spent some of the raining time in the barn talking to the very interesting reinactors working there.

I agree it was a wonderful day. We went on the Fourth of July which was very special. Because we knew it would be a crowded day we paid the extra money (I think $5-$10 a person) to be able to by-pass the line and get a time to show up and go straight on the house tour. We considered it a donation to a National Historic Site and a save-our-sanity-charge and gave us much more quality family time together.

We had such a nice time that we have decided that over winter break we are going to tour Thomas Jefferson's Home.

Have a great day.

We were there this summer. We spent all day there, and could have spent more time there. Also, they have a National Treasure 2 tour if you are interested in that. You get to see parts of the house that the normal tour doesn't cover. If you think you would be interested, go online and reserve your tickets as they sell out fast.

As others note -- it's great. There is a new museum there (well, a few years old now) with things kids will enjoy. Don't miss the kids' hands-on room in the museum-- it's tucked around a corner and easy to miss. Also be sure to check the web site for the day you plan to go; see if there are any special programs or tours that day specifically. Often they have "Mrs. Washington" in residence and she chats with visitors at specific times, or the General himself is on the grounds. Check at the visitor center front desk if there are any kids' "trails" for them to follow -- maps the kids can use to track down certain things and note them. Look for all family-friendly events on the web site.

One thing to know about MV, though; the only thing they did badly was the tiny food court with its very few and very unhealthy selections. I'd be sure to bring my own lunch if you can. The sit-down restaurant is good but pricey and even on weekdays can require reservations to get in.
