I went to my son's 6th month check up today and my dr. told me that she always gave her kids motrin instead of tylenol. What do you guys use? I'm a new mom and until today, I've always used Tylenol for everything.

I also would like to solicit advice on how to help my kiddo w/teething. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I use both, depending on the reason. Motrin (or Advil) last 6 to 8 hours and works really well on really high fevers. 102+. Tylenol works well on lower fevers 100-102, and overall crankyness but only last 4-6 hours.

KAT - I just asked the same question to my pediatrician. I was told either is fine if you are talking about teething and fevers.

Girl...there is nothing you can do for the teething thing. Just give him things to suck on...cold or even wet wash cloths. If you are sure they are bothering him give him some before he goes to bed - this will help keep him from waking up because of pain. And I am sure the drull is flowing!!!! I have friends who's babies have classic symptoms and then a week later - there is the tooth - every time. So I would really start paying attention to that. This way months from now when the behavior changes (cranky, etc), you will know what it is instead of worrying that you should take him to the doctors.

You are doing an awesome job with baby Rylan. Keep up the good mothering!

Hi Catherine you have to be careful with Tylenol now I was at my doctors last week when he just received something about tylenol and the liver, you have to make sure you dont give to much and they dont recommend it for low fevers. Motrin last longer. I hope this helps you

It's good to alternate them. Overuse of Tylenol is hard on the liver, but overuse of motrin is hard on the kidneys. Alternating will help ensure not to overuse either. As for which works best, it varies from person to person and situation to situation. Trial and error is the best way to find out.
