Mosquito Bites - Springfield, MO

My son 3 1/2 and daughter 11 1/2 also have that problem and I will either make a paste of 1 or 2 aspirin pills dissolved with just enough water or I recently started using Campho-pheneque. They both say it stinks but takes the itch away. I've noticed the Champho also makes the swelling go away too. As soon as you see one just put a little dab on it with a Q-tip and blow it dry. When my 2 year old gets mosquito bites they swell and get hard. They also last for a long time. I use hydrocortizone cream and he tends to leave them alone. So, yea we have the same problem. Some kids just react more to bites

My 18 month old boy had the same thing! It scared me, they were so big and red... it almost looked like burn marks, at first.

I used the hydro. cream also, and then gave him baths with Aveeno bath (for the itchy skin). I called my doctor and she said that as long as there was no fever, he was fine.

There has been no fever and he actually didn't itch them at all. Warning though, his are just now dissapearing and it was at least two weeks ago! Some kids just react that way to bites. : (

I have 2 kids that also have this problem. A 7yr old son and a 3yr old daughter. I also have it. It's an allergic reaction to the mosquitos. I give them a little benadryl if it's at night or put just a little Benadryl cream on it if it's during the day. The liquid puts my kids out like a light so I don't use it in the daytime but it may not affect your daughter that way. My kids and I are also moderately allergic to other insects like bees, wasps, horseflys etc. so you might watch out for that as well. None of the reactions have been severe-more uncomfortable than anything. I just keep Benadryl around and so far that's all we've needed. I did consult their DR. and he said it was not uncommon or a big deal. Just treat it like we had been. Hope this helps. I know the bites can look very alarming sometimes. My son had a couple on his forehead and it looked like he was growing horns!

My daughter is also extremely allergic to mosquito bites. It's weird, because she's 2 1/2, and I know this hasn't been a problem before this year. Anyway, she doesn't scratch as long as she has a Dora band aid on them.

My middle child has severe swelling with mosquito bites. Her pediatrician gave us a steroid foam to put on the bites. This helps and saves us trips to the doctor or ER for mosquito bites.

Both my husband and daughter are the luck ones, they almost never seem to get bitten - but when I do they swell, turn reddish-purple & itch like crazy! I use an allergy pill, like Benadryl, to help with the itching, but I also use Calamine lotion too. It works pretty well with itching & you can use it up to 3 or 4 times a day. The same thing happens to my 3 girls, ages 4 1/2 and 3 1/2. They look so painful on them. We give them a teaspoon of benadryl and it usually makes them go away in just a few days. Their doctor says that they just have some type of allergic reaction tothe bites and that is why most of the time they swell up so bad and sometimes feel very warm. I hope she gets better. i think alot of kids react to them worse than we do. My brother was "allergic" to mosquitos when we were kids..they said so because of the HUGE welts they would leave. Not at all now. Hopefully they wont always bother her so much. Having the same problem here, and even though we use repellant when outside, the darn things come in with the dogs so shes getting bitten inside as well. grrrr

My lil 2 1/2 yr. old daughter gets the same big swollen bites on her also....the doctor said that her body just reacts to them a lil differently. He said theres no harm, they just look really horrible, cause they are huge. I've tried putting all sorts of stuff on it to minimize the size of the welt, but nothing that I have found ever seemed to work, you just have to wait for the bug bite itself to go away, sorry that I am of no help, but i just wanted to let you know that your not the only one with this type of problem:)

Some people are just allergic to mosquitto bites, I'd keep using the cream but also give her benadryl to help take the swelling down. Also, I've tried a mixture of baking soda and water to make a paste and it helps takethe itch out. Good luck!

My 5-yr-old always has bad reactions to skeeter bites. He got one on the upper part of his face once that swelled up so much it swelled part of one eye shut. His ped says he's just hyper-sensitive to them.
My MIL swears by a paste of meat tenderizer to take the itch away, and it does work, but it doesn't help the swelling. I just try to keep my son inside during prime mosquito time: dawn and dusk. I also keep the bug spray and Avon's SkinSoSoft handy.
Just make sure they don't get infected, and she should be fine, but if you're still concerned, have your ped take a look. Good luck!

J., My daughter had the same thing, doc said to just put the cream on it and give benedryl, its cause she is more allergic to them then most people. He also recomended the avon skin so soft bug repellent with pacardin when she goes outside and it works great, have had much of a problem since. Good luck!
