Mosquito Bites - Flower Mound, TX

When my 3.5 year old son gets a mosquito bite, it gets really red, swollen and sometimes oozes. The first time it happened, I took him to his ped. and they thought it was infected and put him on antibiotics. Have any of you had this experience with your child? I am thinking about taking him to my allergist, but think it may be a waste of time. Please note that we do use repellant when we will be outside for a long period of time, but the mosquitoes seem to be really bad this year! Thanks!

Another thing to try is Itch X. It's sold over the counter at many drug stores. It was recommended by a dermatologist after I explained that a mosquito bite on my child gets red, swollen and last for up to two weeks. It has helped.

i am allergic to mosoqitos & have had a problem since i was a kid...same as yours mine get extremely red swollen & sometimes ooze...if your child is outside often i wouldnt use any kind of scented lotion (if you do).....after i get a bite i put clear nail polish over it to "seal" it & not let oxygen get to it...it seems to help with the "itchy"ness & oozing.....also i put lots of "off" candles around my porch & use tiki torches in my yard...also i use repelent with deet (its stronger), but i dont know if they have that for kids. hope this helps

Try Burts Bees Lemongrass inscect repellent (Ace Hardware carries it). It smells real lemony but really work well. My daughter is allergic to OFF and Skin So Soft and also to the bites themselves so this is the only thing I have found to work (I think is was $7.00) Good Luck this summer!

Sorry about the little man! My son and I also suffer from the little monsters with huge swollen ugly bites that look bruised after a while. We use Sting Stop, a natural remedy I get at Whole Foods that rocks! It stops the itching completely, helps dramatically with the swelling, and even has Citronella in it that is a natural mosquito repellent. You can buy Citronella plants and keep them outdoors to help ward them off from where ya'll play. Also, I have found that if we eat bananas they seem to attack us more than ever so we stay away from them completely this time year! Good luck! =)

Hello M.

Not too long ago I went to the pedi to show him a very swollen mosquito bite on my 2 yo son's arm and he believed it was infected so he prescribed antibiotics. Before going the antibiotic route I decided to try something else. I went to my local Sprouts store for ideas and picked up a blemish stick (PM me if you want the name). It worked for us. Of course as with anything you use on your children read the ingredients and make sure they are safe for your family.

BTW, when we're outside I put long pants (thin pull ons) on my sons, a dryer sheet hanging out the back of the pants, and I rub some watered down bath oil (PM me if you want the name) all over their clothing. Two evenings ago we did this and the only one with new bites was DH who used something else.

(edited to remove product names)
HTH!

Hi M., my 4.5 year old Son does the same when he gets bitten and I use a really pure form of Tea tree oil that helps soothe and take the ouch out. Our Ped. hasn't ever put him on Antibiotics but they have had us give him Benadryl at bedtime and that helps too. I noticed that "bullfrog" has come out with a "deet"-free bug spray and sunscreen. There are a lot of risks associated with deet.(didn't know that till a year ago) The mosquitoes are going to be bad this year because of all the rain! Blessings, J.

Something I do for my kids as soon as I see the bite I put apple cider vinegar on the bite -- let it dry -- then rub cortaid cream on it. The vinegar helps the swelling and redness to go down quicker and the cortaid helps the itching. I'll do this for a couple of days and then they usually almost gone after that. This is my second year using these things and it has really helped my kids. Now I'm trying to figure how to eliminate the mosquito bites in the first place.

Good luck.

My three year old daughter had the same thing happen to her last year. I was so worried because the bites got really puffed up and were leaking fluid. Her doctor said the best thing to do is put a topical antibiotic on the bites and cover them with band-aids. And I once took my son to the Emergency Room because one of his mosquito bites became so swollen that it was about the size of a tennis ball. All they did was give him a shot of antibiotics and sent us home. I think it's just one of those things that we have to put up with during this time of the year and it's probably not serious enough to consult an allergist.

I am allergic to mosquito bites (and other stinging/biting insects) and mine have always festered up like you are describing. I don't think it would be a waste of time to take him to the allergist, but there's really nothing new that they can do for him. Taking him to the allergist would just confirm that he is allergic (it's always nice to know for sure and that it's not something else). I checked with my dr to see if there any advances since I was kid (as I know my daughter seems to have gotten all my allergies), but he said no - really nothing they can do for this type of allergy.

I had a dr tell me when I was kid (or, really, tell my mom... but I was there... you know how the dr's talk to the adults) that part of the reason I got bitten more was my allergy. There was something about allergic people that attract the little nasty things more (my mom was telling him that they put lots of repellant on me but I always seemed to get more bites than my sister or parents).

Anyway, the suggestion about long pants and long sleeves is a good one - make sure they are light colored. Dark colors attract mosquitos.

Raid makes a product called Yard Guard (http://www.killsbugsdead.com/fop_ygof.asp) that repells mosquitos from your yard for 4-6 hours. It works pretty good to cut down the population for the evening. They are really bad this year, so it doesn't seem to get them all gone, but at least they don't seem to be hovering around the door waiting to run inside with us when we go in!

Things to help him feel better: If they are festering (oozing or could ooze if opened up), open it (with a needle or sharp tweezers) if it's not and rub alcohol over it... shouldn't burn because it's not like a cut or something... just feels cool like when you rub alcohol over your skin. Then put on an itch reliever. Good ones are Benedryl cream (not the sticks, not the spray and not the "clear"...just the white cream... don't know why the other ones don't work as well, they just don't), Calydryl lotion (the pink version only... again the clear doesn't work as well - don't know why) or ChiggerX or any other anti-itch that has benzocaine in it.

If you put the benedryl cream on when he first gets them, it will help to keep them from getting so swollen and from festering. After that, it's just itch control so use either the Calydryl or the benzocaine, whichever one seems to work better for him. The alcohol on the festering ones helps to dry it up and will help it to get better faster. Calydryl works in much the same way (dries them up if they have festered).

Hope that helps!
