Morning Sickness, Help - Fairfield,CT

When I was pregnant with my first child I had unbearable morning sickness for 12 weeks. I didn't throw up a lot; I just had unbelievable nausea 24 hours a day. I could barely function at work and at home.
Now I am pregnant with my second and it looks as if it is going the same way. I have only made it through my first week of morning sickness and I don't know how I will get through another 11 weeks of this. I'm willing to try anything at this point and I would love to hear suggestions of what has helped other moms.
I can tell you some things that have NOT worked for me so far: Preggie Pops, ginger, ginger ail, and acupressure bands.
Some things that have kind of helped...sometimes: Peppermint and sprite.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

So What Happened?

At 17 weeks pregnant, I think that I have FINALLY turned the corner with the morning sickness. Maybe now I can actually enjoy being pregnant. Thanks everyone for all the suggestions! Unfortunately nothing helped tremendously, but many of the suggestions did help at different times even if it was just enough to take the edge off for a few hours. Strangely, when something did really help one day, it often did not help the next (so frustrating). I was very grateful to have a list of new things to try each day and it was nice to know that there are other women who understand how truly awful the nausea (and everything else that comes with it) can be.
All my best!
B.

it is awful isnt it! you have a lot of good responses. i had a constant supply of lemon water in the fridge and still do. trident spearment gum, tea with lemon at nite, starchy food, small frequent meals, sandwiches. those nausea prescriptions make you constipated so look out for that. i also found that antihistimines act as anti nauseums. i took Zyrtec which is safe and it really took the edge off.
hang in there..

Hi B.,
You poor thing! As funny as this sounds for me it was orange juice, animal crackers and PB on english muffins. Ginger ale and crackers just made me feel even sicker!

Meanwhile one of my managers needs chilli powder and sour ropes.

Hope something works and it passes soon.

Congrats!

Hi, B.,

Lemon drops and other sour-type hard candies helped me some, and I drank a lot of caffeine-free Coke. But mostly for me it was just getting through it. Also, whenever I felt nauseated while driving, I would put on some of my favorite songs from high school and sing along, and believe it or not, that woulld help. Just took my mind off it, I guess. Good luck!

I had terrible nausea with both of my pregnancies as well. Aside from the preggie drops (lemon flavor primarily), the thing that helped me the most was lemonade (I found an organic lemonade at Stop & Shop -- Nature's Promise brand). Also I pretty much ate constantly, which wasn't great for my weight gain but was the only time I wasn't nauseous. Hang in there -- it did improve a little bit after the first trimester ended and became more bearable... but I still drank lots of lemonade!

B.,
You may be reluctant to try medications, but they made an enormous difference for me. I had morning (actually all day & night) sickness for the first 5 1/2 months of my pregnancy. I was hospitalized for dehydration by the time I was 3 months. The doctors then started me on reglan. Did not help. By the time I was 4 months along, I was hospitalized again for dehydration. I was also losing weight becuase I could not keep anything down (even the brat diet - bananas, rice, applesauce, toast). The doctors started me on zofran. It did not make me 100% better, but atleast I could keep down the basics. If there is some other way than medication, by all means try it. Don't feel bad, though, if you need to ask your doctor for some help. Nothing that anyone has mentioned so far gave me any relief, and yup, I tried it all. Good luck.

Try Tropical Papaya chewable wafers, you can get them at the healthfood store. I got the Country Life brand. They are basically a digestive aid and i would chew 4 wafers anytime I had that nausea feeling esp. after eating. They worked for me, and i still use them now, being 28 weeks pregnant whenever i feel really full after eating!! It helps break things down and get it moving through so you don't have that uncomfortable full feeling. Def. worth a try!!! Good Luck!

Plain dry Saltine crackers(or dry toast.) Keep them by the side of your bed, before you go to sleep at night, so that in the morning they are right there already to immediately eat a few before arising out of bed. It helped settle my stomach, and I hope it helps you too!

Congratulations! I had three pregnantcies where I was sick from conception to when they came out so I have felt your pain. Try Stomac Soothing Complex from Shaklee. I wish I knew about it when I was pregnant. I'm a distributor, the link is below. You can view the product label as well. If you find it doesn't work, you can get your money back, all the products have a 100% money back guarantee. Let me know if you have any questions.

I know 11 more weeks seems like a long time, but the weather is warming and it will pass more quickly then you think.

Good luck,

All I can offer is do the best you can to keep your sugar level up and this will keep the nausea away.

Try a hard candy or a sugar coated gum drop maybe - they make'em in mint.

Sugar coated ginger for five months worked wonders for me and I could tell when the levels were dropping so always had a nibble at the ready.

Good luck :-)

Hi B.,
I hear you! I had bad morning sickness with my 1st and 2nd pregnancies, but absolutely horrible all day sickness with my third. I am currently 21 weeks and was out of the woods with it at about 14 wks. and totally recovered at 16. The best advice I can give you to get through it, is to try to think positive as much as possible. Do not do a countdown, it only prolongs the agony. Eat whatever you crave. I craved crackers and cheese. I ate it almopst 24/7. I also only ate Cheerios for breakfast. I also loved steak, but hated chicken. Another idea, we live not to far from a good Japanese restaurant, my husband would pick me up clear soup and rice. I ate bread, bagels, and breadsticks to ward off the naseau, especially when I first woke up. I kept breadsticks and saltines by my bed. Not all women have the same cravings, but you will have them, so try to use them as a guide. I would also hold my breath and nose, whenever I smelled anything bad, which was all the time. Just try to think positive and about the wonderful reward at the end. God bless you and good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

Hey B.! I was sick with both pregnancies too! But, I was severe to the point of hospitalization because I was throwing up non-stop...The ONLY thing that helped me not to feel nauseaus was the prenatal vitamin that your healthcare provider can either give you samples of or write a prescription for called Premesis Rx. It contains 75 mg of B6 vitamins which completely took away that nauseating feeling. I mean, I couldn't even be in the kitchen if rice was being cooked because of the smell! Terrible. Get the prenatal vitamin and start feeling better!

try lemonade or water with a slice of lemon in it. And small snacks all day long seemed to help me. My morning sickness would be the worst when I was hungry. So try to nibble on some crackers or some bread all day long to keep a baseline level of food in your stomach at all times. Also fresh air seemed to help me. Make sure you keep the windows open and get outside for a little while every day.
Resist the temptation to ask for medication unless you are truly throwing up all the time and not gaining weight. Yes, they say it is safe, but there are lots of medications that doctors used to think were safe for pregnant women and it was discovered later that they did affect the baby.

Hi,

I was also had unbearable nausea for five months and the only thing that offered any relief was peanut butter. The natural stuff, lightly salted and without sugar worked best for me. I tried it all!

(My son was born when I was 42. Maybe there's a connection between having a child in your 40's and really awful morning sickness?!)

Feel better,

I'm sorry you feel so terrible. That is the worst feeling! I was so sick with my second son that I couldn't even keep a teaspoon of water down. I switched Dr.'s because mine kept saying things like "crackers, etc." , this was wayyyy beyond crackers or ginger ale! I lost over 10 pounds in the first 2 months and when I switched to a new doctor he was so angry that my old one let it go this far. He was going to put me in the hospital but he gave me one chance. I was given the prescription Zofran. It's an anti-naus. medicine that is used for cancer patients. My doctor said if I don't feel 100% better in 24 hours to call him back up. (not 100% back to normal- just better) It was amazing!I remember eating toast and having a gatorade for breakfast and crying! I can't describe how much better I felt in a matter of days! Oh, and my son was born healthy weighing over 10 pounds, that just shows you how much I could eat after that! When I was pregnant with my 3rd child, I wasn't as sick but I still lost weight during the first 16 weeks, then the only thing I could eat was bologna and lemonade. (it sounds gross, i know-my husband stills hates it) Just know that there are some meds out there that can help and you just need to keep trying! Good luck.

This is a tough one because everybody is so different. I had terrible all day sickness with my son for the first 24 weeks. I threw up near every day for the first 16 weeks - some days not even water would stay down. I found that plain brown rice with salt and ice cold water helped. But, that's what I craved (the water) and brown rice I found by default since it was the only thing I could keep down at times. Some days not even that helped. B6 didn't help me either. I thought it was at first, but after a week I felt worse. The only thing that saved me was a loose schedule at work that enabled me to leave often and come home to take naps in the sun. I slept about 3 hours each afternoon in the beginning stages. I know with another child to care for it's got to be even more difficult, but you will find something that works, and maybe it won't even be as bad as the first time around! Good luck!

Hi B., so sorry to hear you're not feeling well. I'm writing to let you know you're not alone. I've pregnant with my second as well. My first pregnancy was a dream! I was momentarily nauseas maybe half a dozen times and it quickly passed. I'm now in my eighth week and have been nauseas for the past month. If I'm not eating, I'm nauseas. I don't know if it's already starting to subside or if I'm just getting better at managing it but here's what I'm doing: eating as often as possible and not letting myself get too hungry or over-full. Plus, I try not to eat and drink too much together. And I'm staying hydrated. Eating healthy really does seem to help. I load up on salads, fruit and veggies, which seems to help the slow moving digestive system as well. Citrus seems to help curb the nausea also, even when it's already in effect.

I hope something I'm said helps. I've finally managed to regain a few of the lbs I lost last month. Just make sure, no matter how sick you are, that you stay hydrated and continue to take your prenatals. Everyone keeps telling me it's a "good sign" that I'm nauseas. GGGGRRRRR! I think that's the equivalent of telling a bride it's good luck when it rains on her wedding day. : P

Feel better and best wishes for a happy, healthy baby!

You are not going to believe this at all but with my morning sickness with my second child the only things that gave me relief were salt and vinegar potato chips and lemonade. I too tried sucking on ginger candies and it only made me feel worse.
The degree of my sickness was bad and it wasn't just in the morning it was all day. I know the thought of those foods while nauseas only makes you more sick but it really worked for me and I have no idea why.
Also, I heard Cola syrup from the pharmacy is suppose to work well too. It's concentrated cola without the carbonation and you don't need a prescription for it either.
I hope you find something soon to relieve your nausea...I fee your pain.
Good luck!

Hi B.,
First off, Congratulations on being a "Late Bloomer".
I am also. I became pregnant for the first time at the age of 44! Our Miracle Baby! Married 13 years and out of the blue, we were pregnant!
I wish I had my first at 41, b/c I would have tried for a second one in a heartbeat, but at 46, I am not going to push it.
Anyway, you poor dear...
I remember it well....that horrendous pulling nausea that just won't quit. All I know is that I was much like you. None of the "remedies" ever helped me.
I found comfort foods to help me the most.
At least while I was eating them, I felt better, but it came right back afterwards. I hope it doesn't last 11 weeks for you this time around. Every pregnancy is different and perhaps it may only last a week or so.
I chewed on ice also. I had terrible "hot poker" type heartburn. Zantac was a huge help for me too for that!
After the worst part passed, I found that certain foods didn't taste right to me and that the issue with smells didn't leave me. I wish I had a magic remedy for you, but I know what that feels like and nothing helped me either. I could barely get through my day too and for the first 5 days, I stayed home.
I guess I just wanted to wish you well and will say I prayer for you that it doesn't last long!

B.,
Small bites of bread might help and nuts (try your favorite or almonds/cashews. Giving your recalcitrant tummy something to do will hopefully take care of the nausea.

Other things to try: Small amounts of protein (pick your favorite), crackers, cheese.

Trying is the only way to find anything that will give your stomach acids something to DO, instead of churning around in there making you feel icky.

Also - you might try laying down on your side with your legs drawn up a bit (well as far as is comfortable) to take the pressure off your tummy.

Sedentary activities also sometimes help(ed) me: reading a book, enjoying a hammock, etc. TV is not relaxing and is actually very annoying when I'm feeling nauseous. So I do try to find other things.

Good luck,
M.

Dear B.,

Sorry to hear that you are having such a problem with morning sickness. I don't think age has anything to do with it, and after reading some of the other responses, I would also consider having hard candies and crackers by your bedside so that you can nibble on them BEFORE getting out of bed.

Do you have any allergies? I ask this because my girlfriend has had allergies all her life, and when she was pregnant, from the time she conceived until she was on the delivery table, she was sick as a dog. Her body was allergic to her babies - and she was pregnant four times, the last one several years after the second one (her third one was an ectopic pregnancy, so that didn't last long). She learned that cottage cheese and some other foods would help her along. She had quite a period of time between #2 and #5 kids because she adopted two children during that time (she and her husband were both only children and they wanted a big family). With her last one, she thought she was allergic to the OFF she was spraying on the kids during a bad mosquito summer, ended up in the hospital to have all sorts of tests done, and then found out she was pregnant again. Again, she went through the 9 months of nausea. I wish I could remember all the foods she tried, eliminated and was able to eat, but it was so long ago. I guess you'll have to try testing what foods will stay down for you.

I hope you are over your morning sickness soon.

J. B.

I can totally relate as I am going through this right now. Nothing really worked to help the nausea until I finally asked the OB for medication. I take it at night to help me at least sleep and not constantly wake up from the nausea, and just deal with it during the day. The name is Zofran and it has really helped. Ask your OB as it is totally safe for the baby. Good luck!
