Does anyone have any thoughts on good montessori schools in south Mpls? Lake Harriet Montessori is fairly close to our house and after reading their website I am intrigued, but I don't know anyone who goes there. Any thoughts?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the input everyone. We just toured Sunny Hollow, which is an AMI accredited montessori. (Thank you for explaining that Sarah P.!) It's not right in our neighborhood, but only about a 10 minute drive. We were so impressed with what we saw I think we will probably apply there. I appreciate all the advice Moms!

You should definitely look in Lake Country Montessori school - although they tend to have long wait times. Another school I highly recommend, though it is not in your area, is Oak Hill Montessori in Shoreview. Trust me that it is absolutely worth the drive.

On a side note, you need to be careful when you are looking into Montessori schools. The name "Montessori" is not trademarked, and any daycare center can call themselves Montessori - even if they have nothing to do with Montessori. There are two accreditation systems, AMS (American Montessori Society) and AMI (Association Montessori Internationale). The two camps are not the same. AMI schools must maintain rigorous international standards in which they must adhere to the original methods of Maria Montessori. AMS schools must also adhere to standards - I am much less familiar with these. The general idea of AMS is that Maria Montessori's methods have been "adapted" to American life.

My daughter attends Oak Hill (and has for 6 years, since she had just turned 2). I also taught at the school and would be happy to answer any questions you have about the school in particular or AMI schools in general.

Good luck in your search!

I can recommend Child Garden Montessori. It's a daycare center, and quite wonderful. There are two branches, both by Loring Park.
