Moms with Milk Allergy Experience

I don't *think* my son has a milk allergy, but I'm not sure. He is a year and a few days old and we introduced whole milk about 3.5 weeks ago. He was on soy formula because he spit up a lot when he was very little but we were never really diagnosed with an allergy. He likes the whole milk and is up to drinking about 10oz per day of it (still on formula for bottles). Since we started he has had much firmer (sometimes very hard) bowel movements, although they never seem to hurt him. He also has had a runny nose and congestion for about 2 weeks now and I'm not sure if it's a cold or could be a sign of allergy. His 1 year appt is tomorrow and I'll be asking, but I wondered what your signs of milk allergy were for your children?

What can I do next?

There can be an allergy even if your child does not test positive for it. My daughter didn't but she is still considered to have an allergy because she does have symptoms. Eczema, ear infections, rashes, bladder infections, runny nose, and more. http://www.drgreene.com/21_106.html a great website on milk allergies and more

My son (now 3-still allergic) became very constipated, vomited, had a runny nose, "allergic shiners", and seemed pretty phlegmy. He had a RAST test at 15months and a skin prick test at age 2, both confirming a dairy allergy.

I heard from lots of people that if it was a milk allergy, he would have blood in his stool, but he never did.

Try putting im back on the soy for a couple weeks and see if his symptoms go away. Then try the dairy again and see if the symptoms come back.

M.,

My son's food allergies (wheat, eggs, peanuts, milk intolerance) emerged when he started table foods. His symptoms are a red rash on his cheeks, hyper, and if he eats eggs he throws up.

I knew nothing about food allergies back then and didn't know what was happening. But if you are suspecting food allergies of any kind only introduce one new food a every three days / to a week and look for reactions. And keep a food journal!

Good luck!

My daughter had a milk allergy at the same age. I don't think your child has a milk allergy. My child projectile vomitted when she drank milk. The vomitting took so much out of her, that afterwards she was like a limp noodle. She finally just grew out of her allergy at age 7. I think your baby is just getting used to a new diet and had a cold.

HI M.-
My daughters (both of them) symptoms were nasal/sinus congestion and mucus in their stools. This started immediately upon birth and therefore I had to eliminate all dairy from my diet. My oldest daughter was confirmed with a blood test and a skin prick test since I didn't catch on that was an allergy until she was a few months old. From conversations with other moms with kids with food allergies, it seems there can be varying symptoms!!!! Good luck.

Hi M.!
I babysit for my cousins daughter and she is about to be 2(yay!) in July. We noticed a change when she would eat diary when she was younger, at first it was constipation, then she would vomit if given too much. Well, one day, we were eating at the table and she was sitting in her high chair, my friend gave her a spoon with some sour cream on it. She , of course had no idea, and we were not certain as of yet, but anyway, When the baby ate it she , of course, got it on her face, around her lips and cheeks. She broke out with a light rash and after trying to figure out why this occured, we remembered that she had that cream all over her face. After that incident the rest fell into place. She can have very small amounts with no affect, but if given too much all those symptoms come back. This was my experience! She has been on lactose free milk and we are very careful! Hope this helps!

My oldest has a milk protien allergy, pretty mild, but he gets dark circles under his eyes and his eczema (from the protein allergy) flairs up badly, gets all crusty and bleeds if he has too much milk or certain dairy.

you can see an allergist to get tested, but it sounds like a coincidence.... he could have seasonal allergies....

My daughter developed firm poop and I'll guess that it was because of the switch to whole milk. We have her on a powder that we mix into 8oz of fluid once a day. She's 2.5 and she's still on it. we give it once or twice a week now. The other symptoms may just be a cold coming on. You can add more fiber and see if that helps with the hard poops. If the other symptoms don't go away then maybe it's a symptom of an allergy.
