Moms with Back Pain

Any moms get middle/upper back pain. I suffer from bad lower back pain and already have arthritis and spondylolysis. However pain higher up on my back isn't something I normally suffer from. I do lift my 20 month old into his car seat which I know pulls the whole back and it hurts when I do that. Our garage is small so I can't open the car door all the way so I definitely strain. I've taken some ibuprophen for a day but doesn't do much, neither does heating pad.
Of course I googled middle back pain and lung cancer came up so that freaked me out. Anyone else get pain in these areas.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Apparently I pulled a muscle in my mid back that took months to heal. I did ice therapy which really helped. Once in awhile it comes back if I lift my son into his car seat. I really try to make him climb in himself.

I would like to know too. I have been helping my kids, up and down, and been debilitated by pain and strain. So bad that I couldn't walk well, and not up stairs without being very slow and with help.
Pretty crummy when you have young children. I have always had back pain ,but never like this....

No I have the lower back pain and went to a sports Therapist.. They had "Back School" and it has saved my life.. One thing I learned was to have my child climb into her own car seat.. You will need to place youreself all the way into the back seat and learn to lock it with out twisitng.. I had a a lots of room in the back seat, so I could so this..

I also never could park in the garage, because I could no longer open the door as wide as I needed. and then enter the car correctly. So we purchased a smaller car with a taller front seat and I was able to use my legs and back into the car seat with my back held correctly.. You may need to consider something like this..

Also, I really had a hard time bending over and lifting, so I had my daughter climb up on a step or a chair and then could just reach out to hold her and then carry her.

Consider seeing if you can find a back school or a therapist that can teach you these things.. There are different postures and different ways to strengthen the other parts of your body so you do not further inflame your back.. Try a cold pad for a few days to help take always the inflammation and then a few days of heat..

There are so many positions and activities you will need to avoid ~ have someone else do or learn to do them in a different position..

I do- although mine starts out in my shoulder blade/rotator cuff area then gradually encompasses my mid to upper spine/back area. I believe it is directly related to lifting the car seat as the pain subsides if I don't lift/carry the car seat (with the baby) for a couple of days.

It might be easier on you if your toddler walks to the car after the car seat is in place and then you assist from there. At least then you can try to use your legs to do the quick lift instead of toting around a 35lb+ car seat/child combo that pulls on your back/neck/shoulders.

Med wise- Naproxen worked better for me than IBU, but considering the other health conditions listed, the rec should come from your doctor. A heating pad, gentle arm rotations, and shoulder stretches helped as well.

Best of luck to you and hope you find something that helps sooner rather than later. :-)

Back pain is very common particularly in moms who are lifting kids, groceries, laundry, and so on. Don't panic about things like lung cancer - it's so unlikely especially when you have so many other factors in your life. There is a great nutritional product (clinical trials, patented - so it's safe & effective & unique) that helps with arthritis which I can give you more info about. It's made a huge difference in my family's life. I have a friend who was in pain every day from bone-on-bone arthritis who needed 20 ibuprofen to get thru her day, and now has been pain-free for 4 years! It takes just a little education but it's phenomenal.

You can google any symptom and inevitable cancer will come up! I can google rib pain, which I have from a totally unrelated issue and find it as a symptom of cancer! Don't worry about it! Find a GOOD chiropractor! There are a lot of sub-par chiropractors, just like there are sub-par MD's. Find one, through a friend, or personal suggestion. My chiropractor saved my ribs and my back. They can treat your spondylolysis, too.

Definitely see a chiropractor. He can adjust you, but also teach you exercises to help. In the meantime, lay on the floor with your feet and calves on a chair, and do crunches. Also, let your toddler climb into the car, then get in backwards, and buckle him in. The same getting out--- get in backwards, unbuckle him, then let him get himself out. Lifting at an angle like that is asking for trouble!

Before I became a Mom , I had lower back pain and some upper pain that I managed with exercise. After my son was born, it is all worse. Any chance you had a c-section? I am trying to get back into an exercise routine that will help me. I think after the c-section, some of my muscle groups lost strength and others are compensating, causing my spine alignment to get out of wack.

Honestly, I have had problems with my middle/upper back for years, and it is always a chiropractic problem. Sometimes my hubby can cross my arms and lift me up to crack it, but sometimes I have to go get it done proffesionally.
It feels like a stabbing pain between my shoulder blades in the middle of my back, and it cuts right through sometimes and feels like heartburn almost. Strange but true, it is almost always in need of cracking when I feel this.

I sympathize though, I am sitting here at work in agony over lower back pain right now... 3 days and counting...

Good Luck

So sorry you are dealing with this pain, L.. If you are open to trying a nutritional supplement, I can recommend a great one that has helped many people with back pain and arthritis. Just recently, I heard the testimony of a man with spondylosis who is doing much better since being on the supplement. Let me know if you'd like more info. Hope you are feeling a lot better soon!
