Mommy Spin with Me

Hi Moms,

Do any of you know a way to stop motion sickness? My daughter loves to spin and wants Mommy to spin with her, but I get very sick when I do it (dizzy, nauseous, etc.). It then takes me at least a 1/2 hour before I feel better.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Sounds like a teaching moment opportunity.
There are some things that mommys can do.
There are some things that kids can do.
This is one of those things that kids can do but mommys can't.
To balance out so many things that mommys can do that kids can't.
Maybe come up with some additional categories.
Good luck.

Spinning makes everyone sick and dizzy, but if it doesn't go away you might have a problem with your inner ear, which controls balance. If you have vertigo, the bones in the inner ear cannot readjust after that type of motion. Try all these great suggestions, but also see if your dr. can check your ears or diagnose vertigo.

Start with the following simple exercises and work your way to longer and stronger. Do them every day for a month, and your motion sickness should be gone:
1. Neck rolls with your eyes open, very slowly, three times each way; do not stress your neck. You can get enough with half a roll. After a week, try it with your eyes closed and see if you can tolerate it one time. Add in another time with your eyes closed as your tolerance increases.
2. Log rolls on the floor with your arms overhead, as slow as you can, eyes open three times each way as slowly as you can. After a week, add in eyes closed as above.
3. Chair turns - sit in a swivel chair and have someone turn you SLOWLY (one minute per rotation), once in each direction with your eyes open. Do with your eyes closed as above.
This takes less than 5 minutes a day, and in a month, you will be fine!! I now can read in the car, myself.
Do this with your daughter, too, and have FUN!

Hi J.,
I haven't read your other answers yet, but I recommend ginger.
You can get it in crystallized candy, capsules, tea, and powder.
But I regularly use Dramamine when I fly or drive long distances. It is okay for kids, too. (1/2 tab dose) Just take the ginger or Dramamine about 1/2 hour before spinning. Then you both can enjoy the spinning!
Good luck!

I don't know if this will help with spinning, but my daughter wears seabands for motion sickness. You wear them on your wrists, and there is no medicine in them. I bought them in CVS for $11. Worth a try? I can't spin either so I understand, and it makes you feel so guilty. But, I agree there are some things Mommy can't do. Good luck!

You can try sea bands. I don't know about spinning but they worked well for me when I was doing chemo. However, it is also perfectly fine to tell your daughter that you simply cannot do this activity. I know you want to and she wants you to, but I agree with the person who said that this is a teaching moment. There are plenty of other things that you can do to spend fun time with her. It's really not worth it if you dont feel well for a half hour.
Good luck!

Bonine works for me for seasick/carsick. I guess if you are anticipating a spin session you could pop one about a half hour before entering the spin zone and see if it helps. I remember going through that as well, didnt keep me sick for a half hour tho, but definitely wasnt one of my most favorite things to do. It's funny how kids love that feeling. I remember my boys spinning till they dropped and then lay on the ground and say "I so bizzy Mommy"....but they loved it.

Do you have the luxury of a tire swing or the option to mount one nearby. not a hanging one like an 'O' but where you hang with three chains and it has a roller ball connection at the top.
These tire swings at our local park saved my mothers life as I was a spinner and she was not - LOL! Every time I asked her to spin me - we went to the park:)

Tell her it makes you sick and you cannot do it. Why would you do some-
thing that makes you feel so bad. Find something else to do with her.

Hi J.,
Not sure if you've tried this.......spin like ballet dancers do! Pretend that you have to keep your eyes fixed on a stationary object in the room while you're spinning (like a picture on the wall). As you spin around, hold your head so that you can see that object until it's no longer possible and then quickly snap your head around so that you're looking at it again. I'm doubtful that this trick helps everyone though! Good luck!
