Mommy Nightmares

It's 4 am and I just woke up from the worst nightmare I've had in a LONG time. My hubby is out of town, so I can't even wake him up for reassurance, I can't stop staring at both kids on the video monitor, every noise I hear sets my heart pounding, both kids are talking in their sleep and freaking me out even more and I'm afraid to go back to sleep and have the dream start again even though I work in 3.5 hours and am exhausted. I'm currently messing around on my phone to wake myself up and distract myself in hopes of being able to shake the terror.
What do you do when you've had a horrible nightmare to get it out of your head so you can go back to sleep?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks ladies! That one was a doozy-so bad my cat woke me up because I was crying in my sleep. I turned the light on right away, checked the kids, checked the house alarm and messed around on my phone for about an hour before I felt comfortable going back to sleep. I read myself to sleep every night, so I was afraid to pick up my book right away, for fear I fell right back to sleep and my nightmare picked back up where it left off as they often do. Read about a page and was out again. Thanks again for commiserating!

I make sure I fully wake up, sometimes just going to the bathroom helps. If not, I get out my book light and read whatever I'm reading until I fall asleep. (except when I was reading World War Z, since I was having nightmares about zombies. Then I grabbed a trusty favorite off the shelf and read that)

I agree with Wendy. Go sit with your babies, reassure yourself, call your hubby if you have to, hey you were gonna wake him up if he were home. Try to relax. It was just a dream although saying that, knowing that and actually feeling that are at opposite ends of the spectrum I know. Good luck

Oh no! That sounds like me! Both my kids talk/cry/yell in their sleep! And when my husband is away I too hear EVERYTHING! I agree with Antonia, turn on the light as low as you can and try to read. I usually fall asleep with the book in my hand.

Try reading for a little while to get your mind on something else, and with any luck, it'll make you drowsy and you can go back to sleep.

Good luck!! =o)

That stinks and I feel your pain. Rather than looking at them on the monitor, go in and rub their little faces. My sleeping kids always make me feel like the world is right. Sit and stare for a while till you're calm and happy again.

Turn on the lights, check on the kids, walk through the house to make sure everything is okay, make sure the phone lines are working, then go back to bed, turn on the tv and watch the news station...it's so boring that I fall right back to sleep.

I had that happen to me last night!
I don't really remember the dream but after I woke up it took me over 2hours to go back to sleep.
Ever friggin noise in my house was freaking me out.
We've only lived in this house for about a month and a half so I'm still kinda freaked out at night anyway.
Thankfully after a while of not being able to sleep my husband rolled over, grabbed me and pulled me tight into his chest. Made everything all better.

I remember I used to have horrid nightmares as a kid. What I used to do is think of a happy subject and repeat it over and over and over in my head till I fell asleep. Hey worked then, haven't tried that in a while though lol
