I personally would not give my 6 month old juice. I believe that at this age they should only be getting their nutrition from formula/breastmilk, cereal and baby food. I would hold off on giving the juice until he/she is at least 9 months old or even older.

We did not start giving our son juice until he was about 18 months and when we did we cut it with water. 1/4 juice-3/4 water We simply did not want him getting used to drinking beverages that we overly sweet. We also didn't see the point in giving him all of that extra sugar. Juice, even juice that says no extra sugar added, has A LOT of sugar in it already. Read the label. What is wrong with water?? It is filling, refreshing, and has absolutely no sugar added. Plus, it's free. 8) We started my son off with water in his sippy cup and now he prefers that over juice and I am sure his teeth prefer it too. Hopefully it will lessen our trips to the dentist in the future.

Hi. I just wanted to add that prune juice is not a good idea unless a child is constipated. It will result in very loose stools. I'm not even sure too much water is that good at that age -- stick with breast milk and/or formula.

I would TOTALLY wait. If you are nursing you don't want to derail his flavor for breastmilk because your supply goes down. But even if you are feeding formula, that is where he is getting allof his nutrition. If you do the research you will see that a cup or so of juice may be classified as a serving of fruit or vegetable by the goverment, but without the fiber and bulk of the actual fruit, it delivers little more than sugar water. Kids don't need juice, but they love it and it isn't bad when you do a little. But now I think it is way too early. If he is constipated give hime a little prune baby food.

I would wait. Especially the prune juice part. That helps to make him go #2. Prune juice is only given if he is constapated. Ask your pedi when you should give him juice. If you decide to give juice get the MOTS FOR TOTS. It is more watered down and has less sugar.

No. Juice isn't for babies. There is no nutritional value in juice, it just fills them up so they don't eat their breastmilk or formula that has all the nutritional value he needs. Babies don't need juice and the AAP recommends no juice under a year old. People think it's cute to see babies drinking a bottle of juice but there is no benefit for the baby.

NO. give him juice when the pediatrician says to give him juice. But better yet- give him water. Why get him hooked on sweets?

You could try a little bit. But water it down first. About 50/50. Half juice, half water. Give him an ounce to see if he likes it and can tolerate it. If not, then wait a month or so and try again. Every baby is different. Some can handle juice at a much younger age then others. But the only way you will know for sure, is to try it.

eh. you don't need to. if you are still nursing, that's all he needs. You can supplement with whatever you want, but fruit juice wasn't on our list at all (still isn't) because of all the sugars that are added (as well as not getting the benefit of the whole fruit, which he can eat mashed up.)
good luck.

I would absolutely wait to give him juice. There will be years ahead of him where he'll be getting plenty of sweet juices. He should be totally fine on formula (and/or breast milk) for now. If it's really hot, you can give him some water but even that is not necessary at 6 months old.

Hi there,

I would definitely not give your son any juice. I know the temptation is strong and we all think juice is so good for us, but it is really just a lot of sugar. You don't want to set up your child's digestive system and life-long habits to include too much sugar.

There is a great book about developing a baby's nutritional intelligence from the first bite of solid food on.
It's Feeding Baby Green by Dr. Alan Greene.
I highly recommend it.
My son is almost 6 months and I am just beginning solid foods. This book has been very helpful.

Good luck....

I agree with all of the moms, except the one posting (which unfortunately is setting your baby up for a BAD HABIT with sweets). I haven't heard of one reputable source that says giving juice to a 6 month old is a good idea. I am sure he'd do fine with it and like it, but that's not the point. More important to give them stuff with some nutritional value. Good luck.
