I was wondering the same thing about my 10 month old daughter. She just opens her mouth like a baby bird while I stand there giving her her bottle for 20 minutes. What a life! When I try to coax her hands up to hold the bottle she yanks them away. All in due time, I guess!

Yes, my son didn't hold his bottle until he was 13 months old. He held it when he was ready. I wouldn't worry about this.

My now 6 month old holds his bottle sometimes. My 3 year old did it @ 5 months & my lazy 12 yr old did it @ 10 months old. It goes to show you all kids are different even when they are from the same family. Even w/ walking they are not the same & not even w/ potty training! Don't fret about it!!

Yes, my daughter didn't hold her bottle on her own until she was almost 9mo. No worries :)

My daughter never held her own bottle, I held her or someone did, every time she ate, as I felt it was important for her to be cuddled while she ate, since she wasnt breastfed. She had no problems with her sippy cups and whatever later. :-)

My babygirl is just under 6 months and tries to hold it but isn't ver succesful! I had a friend whose son didn't hold it for a long time like till he was almost 8 months! Don't worry kids develop at their own time. Enjoy the fact you can still hold him I already miss it with my oldest!

Hi ,
I have 4 boys youngest being 7 months and he doesn,t hold his bottle either. My first held it @ 6mos, 2 boy @8 mos & #3 not til after 1 year. He just didn't. That is not a milestone dont worry about it and dont let people make you feel bad or worried. Every baby is different. eg.. potty traing, bottle weaning ,talking...... when you have doubts ask the dr.Some do it eary some do it late it does not make one smarter than the other.Dont rush simple things babies grow too fast. Enjoy him!

Neither my son or daughter ever held their own bottles. So I would say normal. As for motor skills, well my daughter wallked at 8 months & son at 9. Daughter vclimbed on dining room table at 10 mths and out of her crib at 15mths...My son is 4 & currently does flips off his swing and can throw a ball in the air & hit it with a bat!!! So, no worries!

Some six month olds will hold their bottle and other not. It's okay if he doesn't, this isnt' a major developmental milestone. Remember that when he does hold it, feeding should still be a snuggle time for an infant.

Yes it's normal and just so that you don't worry too much. My son is now 29 months old and never did hold his own bottle. I weaned him off of bottles and into sippy cups at about 12 months and he pretty much has held the sippy cup from the beginning but for one reason or another, he just never held a bottle himself. I guess he thought as long as there was someone willing to do it for him, why bother? :-)

Good luck!
K.

I wouldn't be concerned right now. holding his bottle can occur between 6-8 months. you can encourage it by holding his forearms/elbows so his hands rest on the bottle during feeding.

It's normal. Try to enjoy holding him and feeding him his bottle. Soon he'll be doing everything without you.

My daughter is almost 2 - she NEVER held her own bottle, ever. We got rid of bottles at a year and switched to sippy cups with straws. She's never once had an issue. She can use any type of cup we give her now. It's really not a big deal at all.

Neither does my daughter and she is 9 months. I wouldn't worry about it ( or at least I am not - she's my third and on track for all of her developmental milestones) So, my vote is normal.

If a baby book suggests a 6 month old should do this by now, work the large muscles. That is what we did with my older daughter when she had a lazy eye. She was in 4th grade and we had to start back at the main large muscles. She did stretches on her tummy and then the swim. Maybe a mommy& me stretch video or class will help.
