Mother's who own a business, what is your business and how happy does it make you? Tell me stories. I'm a stay at home mom wanting to open a boutique and sell baby clothing (vintage like) and baby decor, but inexpensive, all these other boutiques i've been to are very pricey and wow. I want mine to be affordable with beautiful detail and style.

What can I do next?

I started a sewing and embroidery business out of my home. I, like you, think that the boutique type stuff for kids is soooo cute, but most are ridiculously priced. So, I learned to make them myself and started giving them as gifts for baby showers. It wasn't long before I had people asking if the stuff was for sale, so I figured, why not? I take mostly custom orders and that keeps me pretty busy. I don't make a ton of money, but I love what I do and it's an outlet for me since I am a SAHM. I think the reason I love it so much is because I can actually FINISH something! As a SAHM, the laundry is never done, the cleaning is never done and someone is always hungry. At least with my business, I can say that I accomplished something from start to finish. :-)

My hubby and I own our business but it is not retail. We are raw materials brokers/consultants. We deal with plastics and manufacturers who process goods such as garbage bags, plastic sheeting, etc.

Yes, it is very rewarding to see something you have created succeed and do well. It is also a lot of hard work and sweat equity.

I'd advise a strong, well laid out business plan with top notch advice from tax and legal counsel. There are tax reports, etc that must be done quarterly, etc, payroll- when you add employees, health care if you choose to offer it, etc.

Best wishes with your idea, I wish you well.

And to Valerie... I wish you lived near me!!! We need more people like you around here with sewing and embroidery experience.

This is my dream business as well. I own an online business selling my handmade jewelry and the like, but I would love to have a brick adn morter store... though it is very hard work! Here are two good reads for you from people who have owned similar businesses (mostly vintage and craft oriented), and their advice:
