Mom's Crazy Night-time Caugh

I can't get rid of this caugh & it wakes me up in the middle of the night. I had it over the New Year & would literally belly-over, hyperventilating to catch my breath from caughing. Thankfully, that ended, but the caugh remained ONLY in the middle of the night. I even blow my nose before bed to avoid the drip - tickle in my throat. I'm up now & it's 1:50am because I couldn't stop caughing. I'll go to the doc unless anyone has any other suggestions. The over-the-counter medication that the doc prescribed over the holidays, didn't work. My husband bought me Vicks caugh syrup & that worked great. I just don't want to have to continue taking that all the time. I've already gone through 2 bottles of it! I need my precious sleep!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the great suggestions! I called the dr again for a prescription & was given Cheratussin AC Syrup. I only need to take it at night before I go to bed, so the drowsiness symptom won't effect my day. I slept like a baby last night for the first time in weeks! I'll try this for about a week & then see how I do on my own. Some of the home remedies sound great as well & I've been incorporating some of them in at night. I'm hoping this caugh will just run it's course for a little bit longer & then go away (maybe wishful thinking, but we'll see).
Thank you again for your support & suggestions.

Zinc Lozenges work great! I got mine at Sprouts but I'm sure you can find them just about anywhere. You allow them to disolve slowly in your mouth. I had a cough like you and a friend recommended these to me. I honestly couldn't believe how quickly they worked. Also, drink lots of fluids and hot water with honey and lemon!

Honestly in my opinion, cough syrup or any otc suppressants just mask the symptoms. You don't want to supress the cough, however I know that is tough when you are trying to sleep!

Hope you are feeling better soon!

You might laugh, but seriously, try putting Vicks vapor rub on your feet, then put socks on.

Also, what kind of medication did your doctor prescribe? You might need an antihistamine like benadryl or claritin.

Good luck!

btw, there was actually a research study done on the vicks with socks. the doctors couldn't find out how it works, but they did find significant results of it working.

I just got over a cough just like yours, and believe it or not, I took Mucinex MD and it worked a miracle for me. You can get it over the counter, and it's worth a shot!
Hope you get well soon!

sounds like you may have asthma. most people do not know that coughing is a major symptom. it is also most prevelant in the nighttime especially when it is cold. i would definitely see a dr. let us know what he says.

well i'm thinking that since it gets to you in the middle of the night, maybe if you prop up on some big pillows or cushions, so that your head and chest are about a 45 degree angle?

Drinking something warm will help with the coughing spasms. Try some decaf herbal tea and see if if helps calm your cough. Good Luck!!

I sometimes have this due to allergies...many...if I take one single Benedryl prior to bed I don't cough and sleep well. Of course, my cat opts to sleep right near my pillow during the day and that doesn't help. Pillow allergies can also cause allergy reactions at night. Prop head higher to allow drainage while sleeping. Good luck! Sleep is precious.

Dear K.;

I heard that Vicks Vaporub is good to rub at your feet every night. It will stop you coughing. Also try to use humidifier at your room. Or go to your allergist doctor and have you tested, maybe you're developing an allergy inside your room or something you ate or drink. At least by testing, they will know it immediately what's trigging your cough constantly. Also before your cough or catching up a cold from somebody else, you can buy echinecea capsules at Lindberg Nutrition Store or any herbal shop sell those capsules. It is a herbal capsules, my families takes it when you feel that you catch up some cold. Take one capsules a day. Also I used to take Cayenne Pepper capsules once a day together with my multi vitamin that I am taking every morning, it really works. The Cayenne Pepper help me not to catch some cold especially winter time season. But my only complain with Cayenne Pepper Capsules, when you burping, you will taste the Cayenne Pepper if you don't mind. But I stop taking it now and I stick with Echinecea Capsules. Good luck and give it a try and see if works with your body.

Here is my homemade remedy which will help to quell the "itch", scratchiness and difficult to swallow feeling.

Get a tablespoon, put a little bit of vegetable oil on it first, then pour the rest with honey. Swallow it down, it will coat your throat.

Good luck.
