Found these online for you, but no one offered quantities - maybe start with a little bit, then figure out how much for the larger amount:

"The easiest 'rule' to remember is that to mix a brown you mix a primary with its complementary color, so purple and yellow; blue and orange; or red and green."

Another place said red and green also, so you might want to start with that.

Yet another place said to said start with red and yellow to get orange, then add blue, so that might also be a winner; but since you probably have bottles of red and green, that first way might be your easiest first attempt.

Good for you, by the way, for making it yourself! :-) Good luck!!!

Nicer food shops (Sur la Table, etc.) have all colors of food dye gels including brown. I would also avoid peanut butter.

Hi J.,

Just a note about using peanut butter to achieve your color:
You might not want to do that if it is for school. There are so many children (my son included) who are allergic to nuts and even contact with another child who has touched nuts can cause severe reaction. Just wanted to mention that! Hope I don't sound snotty! :0)

They do make brown food coloring. I'm not sure of the mix for the regular four that come in the little box but you might want to try adding Cocoa to it. It will give it a little bit of a chocolate scent but it might do the trick for you.

Anyhow, hope this helps.

I saw homemade play dough being made on TV and it was equal parts of powdered milk, honey and peanut butter. It looked brown. And it's edible.

I can tell you that once we had friends over whose kids took my daughter's Playdoh (red, blue, yellow, and white) and mixed them together which made brown.
