With school starting back, my son hears of his buddies going to school. Today he asked to go to school and I told him he had to be 4. His response was "I am 4", he will be three in Dec. He has expressed his desire to go on more than one occasion.

We are a one income family and although I just started selling Avon, and gas prices... we can't afford to send him. We also have a four month old son, so it's not like I have a ton of time. I am open to any suggestions.

Thanks so much,
K.

Hello K.,

I remember living in Germany and not being able to attend school because we were not on the military base and way up in the hills and the school bus would not come on time if at all in the steep hills to pick not only myself but an entire neighborhood of children. So my mother would take me home teary eyed with my lunch box full of lunch and we would have school at home. My mother turned the den into my own personal school room. She bought a little desk for me and a chalk board to put on the wall. We did school work, colored, went out for recess and all; then at noon it was lunch time and I would open my lunch box and have lunch.

Many weeks of going to the bus stop to wait on a bus that never came was heartbreakign to all the children; so my mother invited a few of the children to come to my school and it was really a great experience to have school in your own home.

It was the best feeling for me as a school age child to have my own personal school at home since the school bus did not have a reliable bus driver to pick us up.

So I suggest you get creative and find a way to set up a little school for your son. Start off with stuffed animals for classmates until you can find some other children in the neighborhood can join in.

Maybe you should try a "moms morning out" program. These programs are usually two - three days a week for 3 hours, this would make him feel like he was going to school and they aren't too expensive, at least from what I have heard. This would also give you a break and some one on one with the new baby.

I kinda know what you are going through . . . I have a 3 yr old son AND a 8 month old son. The only difference is I am not a stay at home mom so my children have to attend daycare, or as my oldest calls it "school". The price I pay is not unreasonable. I live in the Villa Rica area and if you are interested I can give you the information to the "school" my children attend. It is a really great center and they even have pre-k when they are 4 yrs old!

Hi,

Maybe your son would be satisfied with just getting out to the park each day (or frequently) or some other outing that doesn't cost much (i.e., ice cream from McDonalds) and is close by so that you don't have to drive far. Plus, most libraries have a story time once a week, so that would be a free outing for you guys too.

Also, maybe letting him try his hand at coloring or finger paints or letting him select a book for you to read, at the same time each day would allow him to think that he's working on "school" things.

Also, remind him how great it is that he gets to spend time with mom and his little brother, and all the other good things about having you home with him.

I just started my kids in a daycare here in Douglasville. I do not know where you live. It is called Caring Hearts Young Hearts. The phone number is ###-###-####. They work with peoples' income and even offer free child care. Check them out. They are off of Hwy 5.
