Mom Seeking Advice Regarding Decision About Child Receiving 1 Year Vaccinations

I am very torn between whether or not to get my son's 1 year vaccinations. While there is no research validating the harmful affects that early childhood vaccines can have on an infant and toddler; I am still cautious about my son receiving so many vaccines all at once. I have heard so many parents with whom I work with speak heavily against 1 year vaccinations; and I just want to consider all the pros and cons in order to make an informed decision for my son. Are there any moms who have contemplated the same thing?

What can I do next?

Thank you all for taking the time to respond. I appreciate all of your thoughts and links to additional information. I know in the end my husband and I will make the best decision for my son, but its always nice to know that others have contemplated the same thing.

Hi N.,
I am not against vaccines, however I do give my children their vaccines on an altered schedule. I have a contact for the MMR separated if you are interested....your pedi just has to be willing to fax an order to them and the vaccines are mailed to the pedi office for the nurses to administer. Email me if you want that ____@____.com. I need your email address to send it to you.

I think this is a personal decision for each parent. I know doing things against the grain is not easy and some people don't understand. I think being cautious is best and at least having your child vaccinated is great, but you have to be comfortable with it, so follow your instincts on this topic despite what others may say.

I could go on and on about this topic, so feel free to contact me if you have questions that I may help with.

ADDED: I just read the other responses and wanted to touch on them. I read "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Children Vaccinations" http://www.amazon.com/What-Doctor-About-Childrens-Vaccina...

This topic can wig you out, so be careful how far you dig in. I do think vaccines have an important role in society, but when I have spoken to my doctor in the past, it was mentioned that ideally the schedule that is recommended is not the BEST to follow, however the state is worried parents would not be willing to bring their child in more often. In the book above, she gives you suggestions for each vaccine on what to do to reduce the effects...for example, with the DTaP, you should give your child juice to rebalance the sugar levels....etc. the book was very helpful in empowering me with things I could do to boost their immune system (with cod liver oil) and other suggestions; written by a pediatrician.

Also, here are a few things that research is showing:
There is a genetic link to whether or not your body can eliminate toxins efficiently. If you do not have the gene that allows you to eliminate toxins, things like vaccines, chemicals, etc can bog down your system and does cause neurological effects. There is a reason to be concerned, but with educating yourself and formulating a plan you are comfortable with, will help you feel confident in your child's health.

I will stop here...I apologize if I rambled too long. Contact me if you need more info or want the contact for separated vaccines.

I vaccinated my daughter who is now 4 on time and never thought about not doing it. I have NOT vaccinated my son and will not until he is at least 4 and the blood brain barrier is formed. My nephew is autistic and going through chelation treatment. After 2 years they are still pulling mercury and lead along with other heavy metals from him. I firmly believe there is a genetic link to SOME children's bodies not processing out toxins they are injected with and exposed to. These are the children that have the horrible reactions listed on the info. sheet they give you before the shots and these are many of the 1 in 150 children that now have some form of autism. For my son it was not a choice, the chances of him dying from an immunization are GREATER than him contracting one of the illnesses they protect. You can read some great links at www.camsvoice.com if you are interested in learning more.
Even for a child not at risk of genetic disposition I would still recommend starting later and only if teters show there is not already an immunity. Good luck, I know it is a difficult decision.

Here is a link to a very good article on a user-friendly vaccination schedule (which he doesn't recommend starting until the child is age 2 and then the vaccines are very limited):

Another great resource is at: http://www.know-vaccines.org/

You are very smart to be researching this. I wish I would have done so with my first child.

Hope this helps!

Unlike what Leah A. said, they do NOT have to be vaccinated if they go to public school or daycare. You just have a form notarized that you get from the health department and turn that in in lieu of their vaccination records. Texas is one of the few states that offers all three exemptions: religious, medical and philosophical. (see link here: http://www.909shot.com/state-site/Texas.htm)

We chose not to vaccinate our now 11 month old, and stopped vaccinating our older children when they were 6 and 4. This is a very personal decision, and requires a lot of research. I wish you the best :)

If they go to public school they have to be immunized.

I had very heavy preconceptions about giving my daughter her 18 mos. shots (don't know why it dawned on me then, but all the bad publicity scared me to death at that point), so.............

I had a very serious talk w/ my pediatician about shots in general. He has two young sons himself (age 3 and age 5) and his wife is also a medical dr. I told him "I know as a dr., you probably have to stick to the shot recommend shedule, but I don't want your oppinion on shots as from a dr., I want your oppinion as a very informed father of young kids. I don't want anything given to my child that you wouldn't give to you kids period!!" And after the discussion, he basically told me that from the RELIABLE studies, no majors links have been shown and that his kids have had every shot recommended and in his opinion, it makes far more sense to OVER-imunize than under-imunize. He said most of the hype comes from studies that are not real reliable and that the most current studies show no link to austism. He also saw a kid die of wooping caugh and said that in his opinion, not imunizing is child neglect. He is a pretty young dr. and very well informed.
In a nut shell, I went in the room almost sure my kid was not getting shots and came out of the room feeling very secure in getting them. Oh and as for worrying about bombarding their system, the dr said you are far worse bombarding their system by them just being born and breathing air and playing then with shots....the stuff they get in shots is far less than a billionth of what bombards their system as new every day until they are about 5, so shots are not to be worried about in this sense.

Hope this helps!

I've never personally thought of anything but vaccinating my son. I wanted to take the necessary precautions in order to keep my son from receiving some of the illnesses that you hear about. My son is almost 6 and has had everyone of his shots. He never has had any difficulties from his shots. For the most part he has been a very healthy young boy. One earache in 5 years and a few colds. Knock on wood, nothing more.

Certainly, you must do what your motherly instincts tell you to do, but honestly in my opinion there are people out there just to scare new moms with the "horror" stories of vaccinations. If we really looked at the research, which I have not, I bet we'd find more cases for vaccinating than against.

Good luck in making your decision.

N.,

I understand what you are going through. I did al of ds vaccinations up to a 18 months, but my dd had her last vaccinations at 6 months(she is 18 months now.) I am still researching, but there is more proof than most Doctors tell. For instance the goverment has a program for compensation to families who's babies have been injured or died from vaccines. I would encourage you to research the disease's themselves as well as the vacinations and the harmful toxins in them as well. There is a book my mil is reading called Educate before you Vaccinate, she thinks it is really good. I have not read it yet,but hope to soon.

I know for sure my newborns will never recieve the hep.B shot 2 seconds after they are born.

I have to go, but will try to get some more info to you. You are being a very loving mother to research this on your own. Who said it was easy being a mom!

I decided to go ahead with vaccines, but for all of them, I split them up to make it easier on his young system. I would always do them in halves (if they were going to give him 4 different kinds of vaccinations, I would do 2). I would then go back a month later and get the other two. My doctor was fine with this and they wouldn't charge a doctor visit for the second half. We go to Dr. Burton in McKinney at All About Children Peds if you're wondering.

I'm with Darla... you have to do your own research and decide yourself. However, I do not believe the vaccines had anything to do with my son being autistic. Not one bit. Others strongly disagree and that's their choice. And it's yours and theirs to choose NOT to do vaccines if that's how you feel.

However, taking the middle road by spacing them out sounds like a viable alternative.

Research past posts on this one. It has come up a lot recently & there are arguements on both sides of the issue, but in the end- you have to choose based on what you believe is the best thing for your son.

We are struggling with the same issues about vaccinating...My son has just been diagnosed with PDD-NOS, which is in the Autism Spectrum. I don't believe his behaviors are caused by his vaccines, because he has shown signs of this disorder since the day he was born (*screaming* when we took a diaper off to change it, and more screaming when we gave him his baths, even in the NICU). He still doesn't like water on his head AT ALL, but otherwise loves his bath time. However, I have asked his pedi if we can give him the Thimerosal-free vaccines, and that is all my son has been given. We are getting his flu shot next week, and I have asked for the Thimerosal-free version of that, as well. We are asking for these because I have a nephew who has Asperger's syndrome, so we know that there is a genetic link, and we are trying to minimize, if not eliminate, the "triggers" for Autism.

My advice is to keep doing your research, ASK questions!!, and don't "freak out" on everything you read or hear.
Feel free to call me or email me anytime, about anything!
