Mom Seeking Advice About Novasure or Mirena IUD

I have been having trouble with irregular and heavy periods which are also painful so I went to see my GYNE and she did an ultra sound to make sure I have no other issues than my endometriosis. My results were fine so I have two choices the Mirena IUD which last for 5 years or Novasure Endometrial Ablation which is permanent. I have done my research but was curious if any of you have had either procedure done and if you were happy/unhappy? Any feedback would be great!!

K.,
I have the Mirena IUD, now for 2 & half years. I love it. You don't feel a thing , and I almost never have a period now. Sometimes I have a little bloating, maybe cramping, and maybe just a little bleedind (twice a year) and that only lasts a day or two. I have two beautiful daughters one is 3 1/2 and the other is 2 1/2.
Good luck

Hello K.
I have the procedure of Novasure and sincerly I love it because like a year ago my OB GYN did the procedure and i feel great no more heavy or painfull menstral periods but if you like to have more kids in the future its not recomendable to do the Novasure.I did it because I really don't want no more kids.I'm very happy with my procedure because i'm don't have to worry about my menstrual periods.

Hi K.! Sorry to hear about your problem. If I were in your position I would go with the Mirena. The Ablation is permanant and are you sure you wont want children later? A friend of mine has the Mirena (5 yr) as a form of birth control and the side effects she does experience are similar to cramps and pain at that time of the month. She does not get her period and very rarly only spots. She does have an increased appetite and gets nausious if she does not eat every couple of hours. That just may be her issues, though. :)Good luck!! Let us know what you decide.

Hi there!

Have you heard of Essure? I had that done over a year ago it's a perment procedure but it's so worth it. I had no problems w/mood swings I still have my periods but it's normal. I have 2 beautiful childern and I knew we were done. i didn't even consider IUD to risky I think.

But you have to decide what you think is best. check out Essure and see what is best for you.
Best of Luck A.

Hi K.,
The NEA is permanent so I would try the Mirena first & see if you like it. You never know if you may decide to have more children later. I'm 44 with 2 kids & I thought 2 years ago that I was done having kids. Now my husband & I are toying with the idea of having another baby. I currently have the Mirena & I love it.

If you think that you might want children in the future Novasure is not for you. I had the Novasure procedure done in September and I am absolutely thrilled, I did not have a period in October, definitely one of the lucky ones. I had already had my tubes tied 4 years ago so I am truly done having children. I have two handsome young men, ages 21 and 18. The next babies in my life will be grandchildren one day.

This would depend on how old you are, if you are a non smoker, and whether you want more children. I would consider that mirena has hormones in it. There is an IUD (paragard) which does not, in the event you should not use hormonal therapies. If you wish to have more children, either one could impede this from happening. Obviously ablation will do the same, however with much less side effects.

I have Mirena and I don't even know when I have my period anymore besides the the occasional pimple. Insurance paid for it and it was an uncomfortable feeling for a day or two, but so worth it. I swear by it. Good luck!

I have had the mirena since May 2008 after I had my 2nd daughter and I had begun having horrible migraines. I also can not lose the weight (even though I am am not gaining). these are two things that with a lot of research I have found seem to be side effects that happen to a lot of women, that my doctors did not want to admit or tell me about. I am actually having it removed, b/c we can not get the migraines under control and it is not worth it to me to continue to make medication, however it may not be the case for you. I do like having a period every other month. Good Luck in your decision...

I choose the Mirena after having my second child and mostly love it. When I first got it I had heavy bleeding but it's been a bit over a year now and now I don't have a period at all. I LOVE that! I think that it's not for everyone though. I had a friend who got it also and she had terrible mood swings from it. I find myself a bit more volitile at certain times of the month but for it's convenience I think it's worth it. I also really try to control my moods when they hit. Good luck in deciding the best choice for you.

I have a 10 year IUD. I am currently completing year four and I love it. I am 44 and I have had no complications except heavy periods on the first day or two for about a year. I did not want surgery or any invasive procedure and this procedure took only a few minutes.
