Hi moms, I'm not sure if this is a silly request, but, was wondering if you had the same experience. My 2 year old son, and only when my husband the crazy driver drives, pats his little head and says "oweeeeee" on the top of his head. I'm a bit concerned and was wondering if I should ask for an MRI but know that he won't lie still for that test. Please help. Thank you!

So What Happened?

Hi wonderful mommies! Thank you all for you input and I've talked to hubby about this & he promises to slow down. I felt like I was a bit on the hormonal side and your answers prove it. Thanks for not letting me embarass myself to my son's pediatrician. :-)

He could be allergic to the car seat. NAET.com for allergy eliminations.

Or he could be being attacked by a satellite system. I have experienced satellite attacks for over 10 years. Try both.

Be well.

Hi M.,
You may have already gotten this response, but he may just be car sick. Little people just don't know how to explain it. Ask the Dr. though, maybe even a pharmacist, they will be able to tell you what to give a young one for something such as this. Good luck

One of my kids gets headaches when in a car, so maybe he has a headache. Tell your husband to quit driving so crazy!

Try telling your Husband to drive more sanely... and safely... THEN see if your son STILL complains about his head.

Having a child in the car, you just need to drive more conservatively anyway.... AND you are pregnant... it might be good to gently 'remind' him to drive more carefully... there are "3" other people in the car WITH him now.

If your son ONLY complains about his head, when your Husband is driving... then, it is probably because of that. It may just be a 2 year old's way of saying to slow down or that he gets nervous with your Husband's driving. Or, unless there is loud music on at the same time your Husband is driving... then maybe your son just doesn't like it... and it makes him unnerved. ?

Do the process of elimination... have your husband drive more carefully, then see what your son says. Or, maybe he just doesn't like your Husband's driving "style." LOL
Since you said your son ONLY does it when your Husband is driving.

All the best,
Susan

I agree with the other moms. I don't think he needs a MRI. Some kids get car sick, some get nervus. It could be that he once bumped his head while dad drove and he remembers that, or that dad's driving makes him nervus so he gets a head ache. Can you remember a time where your hubby made a quick judgement and turned to hard or slammed on the breaks causing him to bump his head? Or dad accidently bumped his head putting him in the car. They say kids don't have great memories and forget easily but they remember the darndest things. Try to talk to your son about when he got his head hurt, sometimes they don't know how to say what they mean but can understand when you say the words. So give him different situations and see if you can get it out of him. or ask him to show you were he got his oowie in the car what did he hit his head on. Play sherades till you figure it out. Kids are smart, sometimes smarter then us until we think on they're level. Good luck, And Congrates with the new one. J.

Hi M.,
It seems premature to request an MRI for just him patting his head and saying "owee", especially if it just occurs when one person drives and not at any other time. Maybe he's trying to tell you he's getting knocked around a bit by your husband's driving, or he's mimicking something he's seen you do when your husband's driving scares you. Or is his head getting bumped when he's put into his car seat?

I'd check these things out before scheduling a doctor's appointment. If he still does it and you really think he has a head injury, schedule an appointment with the pediatrician first and see what the doctor's recommendation is.

maybe your hubby "the crazy driver" is giving your boy a headache or making him queasy with his driving? just a thought (especially if your boy is facing forward in the seat)

it might also only be when your husband is driving because your son could have bumped his head once and noticed that when he said his head hurts you take immediate action. my kids yell and cry when my husband drives because i respond. when i am driving i tell them it will have to wait and they don't act as they do with my husband driving. children do what works to get themselves attention. i think it is premature to get an MRI however i would ask your ped.

Your not being silly, it is a concern. However, do you think your son is trying to tell your husband something? Your son could be afraid while in the car while your husband is driving. Since he cannot speak well to express his feelings, he is acting out the only behavior he knows to show how he feels. His fear is what he is trying to convey to you. I hope this helps you out, also speak to your husband about his driving habits since this is what appears to be what is scaring your son. I know you will have gotten many good and bad solutions to your inquiry but it is ultimately up to you as to what you do.

Good Luck

I agree with most of the other posts ~ sounds like its your husbands driving =} Two out of three of my children get car sick when my husband drives, so far never with me driving. Thankfully since I can at least turn around and help them out. The kids do better if I can get Daddy to slow down and use more care when driving with us in the car with him. Maybe your husbands driving just throws off your sons veritgo and bit and that why he pats his head, his head hurts. Watch to see if your son does this when ANYONE else drives, tell you husband that you want to eliminate something simple from something that might be HUGE, so have him slow down when you are all in the car together. These little tests seem like they might solve your problem instead of a MRI with sedation...but of course talk to your doctor if there are any other signs, and if your son complains of head pain in other areas, or with other drivers. God bless and good luck and CONGRATS

M.,

Yes ask for the MRI as a parent you have the right to ask for testing... but also your husband needs to realize that your son little body is probably bouncing from side to side too much b/c of his crazy driving. Needs to change driving habits.

ask the ped. he wont lie still for an MRI-he'd need sedation, but, a CT is only a minute, and he'll be totally strapped down, w/ his head in a vice, so no worries on movement there.

Maybe the air conditioner is blowing directly on the top of his head. I know this was an issue for our boy. We didnt' realize that the very top of his head got too cold when the air was blowing it... As for the MRI, they'll usually give him a cocktail of sedatives which last just as long as the MRI itself. Worked great for mine.

Hi M.,

Ask your Pediatrition, but I'm pretty sure that to do an MRI for a child not old enough to hold still they would sedate him so that he'd slepp through it. Maybe since he's only complaining about when your husband drives it could be him having bumped his head at one time and he keeps "reliving" it. My 2 year old daughter is very good at that :o) Maybe a visit to the Pediatrition so they can exaine and check for any signs that would need further investigation before going straight to an MRI.
