Mom Needing Advice on Daycare and Colds

Every since my Son (2 years old) started daycare he has been sick almost all the time. He gets rid of one cold and about two to three weeks later he has another one. He was already a picky eater and now I believe he is losing weight. Right now he is recovering from Pink eye and he has had a cold for almost 3 weeks. I have seen the Dr. twice last this month and she is of very little help. I was told that its best to let the colds run their course (Kids get sick this time of year especially when in daycare) and just keep offering my soon food that he likes. I am so frustrated right now with all the illnesses. I think that I may have to find a pediatrician who takes my concerns more seriously.
Please any Advice

Hello B.

I know lots of mothers who have gone through this. Have you ever heard of Melaleuca The Wellness Company? I do presentations about the company and what it can offer. We talk about how daycare centers are havens for illnesses and how children continue to get sick even though they clean with bleach and other harsh ingredients. If you would like to know more just let me know.

Daycare is so hard, especially when they keep getting sick. Are you in a home daycare or a center? I started my son in home daycare and refused to even look at a center because I felt there would be too much sickness at a center. We ended up leaving our home daycare for variouse reasons, one of them being that he was sick ALL the time. We ended up choosing a center and love it. He does get sick occaisionally, but nothing like what we experienced with the home setting. They have strict rules and regulations above what is required by the state and really do a great job. The home daycare we were in really makes me wonder if she ever cleaned the toys, high chairs, etc. May be something to think about if you're in a home. If you are using a center, talk to them about their policies for cleaning and sending sick kids home. A concerned parent may draw their attention to an area they are lacking in... Good luck.

I know it can be frustrating to have sick kids all the time especially when they are getting it from other kids. Do you have your son on any vitamins? If so, it may help boost his immune system, as well as give him all the nutrients he needs (especially if he isn't eating well). My daughter is almost two. My pediatrician recommended that we put her on chewable vitamins when she was 18 mos. I generally use the Target brand of children's chewables. But, she only gets half of it each day. She loves them. You may want to try that! I hope it works. Good Luck!!

As hard as it is to accept that we can't do much but comfort them through illnesses, with a cold, that's really all it's about. The doctor can't give you anything to treat the cold itself, so it'd only be symptom management.

I worked daycare for 2 years, In the winter, kids are sick, all the time. It's just a fact. Provided the kids are otherwise healthy, it can be a good thing, and help boost their immune system. The ones who came all day, everyday for more than 1-2 years were hardly ever sick. Even when they played directly beside one of the kids who was. If you keep him in daycare, he'll eventually fend off most colds on his own. I know that doesn't help you out much now, but hang in there it gets easier.

Well first on the doctor, there isn't much they can do for a cold, if he doesn't have strep or ear infections there is nothing the doc can do unfortunatly.

Now on the daycare, I run my own in home daycare and clean and lysol spray everything daily, and if there is a child with a cold it gets done about every hour. You may want to find out what they use to clean plus how often they clean.

Hi,

There is not much you can do since your child is in daycare. The children pass things back and forth. I used to run a daycare a few years ago and my son was 2 at the time. The babies seemed to get sick where as my son never did. I always give him a vitamin everyday and make sure he washes his hands and face (around his mouth and nose) with antibacterial soap quite a few times through out the day. In your case that would be hard since you have him in daycare, but I would suggest starting your son on a vitamin (preferable flinstones with extra vit C). My son likes those a lot and the extra vit C will help boost the immune system especially this time of year. Poly Vi Sol is also very good. It might help to wash his hands and face as soon as he leaves daycare with anitbacterial soap or with those handy wipes they sell. As far as his eating goes, maybe you could have your daycare provider list the things your son eats during his time with them and make sure while he is with you he eats a healthy hearty meal. I know its hard to get them to eat. I have tried ways to get my son eat. He is also very picky AND has had problems with constipation so I have to be careful with what he eats. Try making his meals fun like cuting the food up in fun shapes or else using colorful foods with tasty dips like ketchup and ranch dressing. My son loves chicken sticks and fish sticks with a side of mac n cheese and green beans with ketchup on them. (at least it'll get him to eat the green beans) Good Luck! -Marci

Talk to your daycare provider. They should be cleaning everything daily. My son at his old daycare seemed to be sick from about Nov-March. At this new daycare, he has hardly been sick at all. Make sure the daycare is sending home kids that are too sick to be there.

If you do not feel you are getting the attention you need from your pediatrian-- get a new one!!! I have a great one if you want the info.

The only thing you can do is make sure the childcare is keeping the toys cleaned each night, and they have the children wash and dry their hands after diaper changes, before and after eating. Its hard when they are in childcare. Ask your doctor and see if maybe a vitamin may build up his immune system a little to. I hope it helps.

This is most likely what you are going to get from any dr. They dont give out antibiotics for colds because they are not used for that. Also, I have found that it is pretty bad the first year your child is exposed to other children in a school/daycare setting. I have 4 yr old triplets and last year was their first year of preschool (head start) someone was sick ALL THE TIME. I was taking one of them if not more to the dr weekly. This year we are doing a TON better. I think I have only had one kid out for being sick maybe 2 days this year. Hang in there, I promise it will get better.

B.,
It is very hard when your child is sick all the time, I understand. When my child gets a cold she does'nt eat as good, probley because nothing tastes to well when you have a cold. They are right though a cold just has to rn it's course. Something good the I use for my daughter if she has a cold though is Saline nose spray for children. It's great and it helps with the stuffiness. L.
