Molluskum - How Long Will This Last! What to Do!

I baby sat a boy my son's age. The Dad picked him up at Noon and brought him back an hour later to take him to a Dermatologist because he said his son had a rash. Previous to this, the Mom dropped him off and said nothing about the rash. Truthfully, had I known about the mysterious rash, I would've refused to babysit. My son has already suffered his entire life with eczema. Well he did get this rash too. And then we found out from the parents it was Molluskum. The mom said that "they caught it from each other". I'm not sure what she meant by that cause the kid already had the bumps and my son had none. So I was a bit annoyed with that. I've since taken my son to a Derm but she just said use unscented stuff and apply a thick lotion after a bath She said this could last up to two years! So I was wondering if anyone found any good way to get rid of this.

What can I do next?

2 of my 3 kids have had this... my oldest only got 2 bumps and they went away in a couple of months and didn't come back. My youngest had a series of bumps that lasted about 2 1/2 years. Keep an eye on them, because there were a couple of them that got infected. We put an antibiotic cream on those, and they cleared up quickly. Eventually, they just went away and didn't come back. He never had more than 1 or 2 at a time, and they were never in bad places.

Don't take my advice without a second opinion from your own trusted experts...but when my son had molluscum (all around one eye, about 20-30 bumps) my doctor TOLD me to pop the bumps and get the little "pus rock" out. He EVEN said, "really dig with your nails and get 'em out. Then they'll heal and be gone. Otherwise, they may take up to two years to go away." I made him demonstrate on one for me, and then I did the rest myself.
It really hurt my son, so each day, we would only do three or four-my husband held his head, and I pinched the cores out HARD-I just let him scream-and then he would get a chocolate treat, and after about a week we had gotten them all. Then they were red scabs, and then they were gone. AGAIN, you don't have to trust me, but that's what I did and it worked.

google molluscum and apple cider vinegar. Apparently there are some home remedies out there, that may or may not work. I figure they are certainly worth at try, as they are not dangerous, or painful. and even dermatological treatments are not always effective...My youngest had them on his legs and had them frozen off- and they didn't come back. My oldest has a couple, but we are justing waiting and seeing. It is common with kids who have eczema because their skin is already often broken because of scratching and dryness.

No, the only thing to do is wait for it to run its course, 1-2 years. If they get on his face or somewhere unsightly you can have them treated (they either burn or freeze them off - it's not pleasant but better than having bumps on his face). It's a virus and nothing kills it. Do read up on it so that you don't spread it to other family members via wet towels and other things.

It is a virus that is very common in kids. It isn't painful and shouldn't cause any problems, just leave it be and it will go away on its own eventually. My son had it for over a year before it went away, but no one else in the house got it.

My friend's two boys have had this. She used tree oil on it twice a day. It took about 5 to 6 months to run it course.

It is contagious, can be spread by bath towels, scratching and is a virus. It is really not a big deal. My son had it and did not transfer it to his brother. My son had it for about 4 months! it was on his rear and legs and seemed to show up in lines. He did not have it very badly and the pediatrician said he probably picked it up at the playground. I hope your son does not get it.

My kids had this 3 years ago. Ugh outbreak from preschool. It spread between my 4 yr old and 7 year old like crazy.. Then it was on my 7 yr old neck / chin . My girls swim and the oldest was embarrassed. So one by one the doctor treated it. All 100 or so. No scar when treat blistered then went away. It really does take 2 sometimes 3 years to go away. I only gave it 3 months before treating. Them b/c my kids kept spreading it to each other.

I treated my son, and then my SIL treated her son with apple cider vinegar. I made a 1:1 solution of the vinegar and water. Then I applied vaseline to the skin immediately around each bump so as to not irritate the healthy skin. Then I dipped a cotton ball in the vinegar solution and taped it to the bump. I did this every night before bed and took off the tape and cotton balls in the morning. I treated them until they turned dark red (kinda looked like a blood blister). after they turned red I let them run their course. I treated for anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks and then the healing they did on their own after I stopped treatment took another week or so. My SIL had similar success with her son. I have also read about adding a couple cups of vinegar to the bath if there are lots and lots of molluscum. Not sure how long it would take to see results that way. Occasionally the surrounding skin would get red and irritated (a mild "burn" from the acidity). When that happened I would take a couple days off from treatment. I also used paper tape (from the pharmacy near all the other first aid tapes) because it is the least irritating. My son was so happy to get rid if those darn bumps! I wish you and your son the best of luck.
