Molluscum or Something Else?

My daughter was possibly exposed to molluscum at preschool so I have been hyper-vigilant about being on the look out for spots. Well she now has three little bumps on her inner arm right next to her arm pit. The go from smallest to largest in sort of a line. They do not fit any of the photo or verbal descriptions of molluscum but I don't know what else they could be... they are small, a little larger than the tip of a ball point pen and when I stretch the skin or look at it from an angle you can barely see them... skin colored and are not pearly and do not indent in the center. They do not itch and have nothing in them because I couldn't resist myself and I tried to squeeze the biggest one. If there were not 3 of them I would be thinking it was just an ingrown hair or something but I am automatically drawn to the assumption that it is molluscum since, like I said, she was exposed. So my question is, does molluscum sometimes take on a different presentation? If it isn't molluscum what else could it be? They have been there for 2 days now, if it were a bug bite or something wouldn't it be gone by now? :/

What can I do next?

Whether it's molluscum or not I wouldn't worry too much about the molluscum. As another poster said, although it is highly contagious it requires close contact to spread. Also, both of my boys had it. It is annoying and can take months (years in some cases) to completely go away, but it is harmless and usually doesn't cause major symptoms.

its something else. I wouldnt be concerned about mollescum unless your child shared a towel or really plays in close quarters with this child and usually little girls arent wrestling around with eachother so contamination is pretty slight its not like chicken pox. Ive gone through mollescum and what you are describing sounds more like a rash from her shirt or something if it got wet sometimes they just get clogged pores like we do. My daughter has one right now on her foot and I've known exactly what it was. Dont freak out she probably doesnt have it.

Well my son has it now...and has had it for going on 4 months now. What you are describing is how it started for him. I kept thinking that it was an ingrown hair or pimple or something. I had a dr. check it out at 2 months...she said it was a pimple - there were 3-4 of them on his upper thigh. Took him back when it was going crazy all down his leg (35+ that appeared in 1-2 days) and then it started to look like the pictures on the internet that you describe above. He has been through a week of the cream, and 2 courses of antibiotics. It is still there and not looking like it is going anywhere anytime soon. I have a dermitoligist appt later this afternoon. My advice is to take her in to a dr. ASAP get it diagnosed and if it is get the topical cream for it before it spreads and becomes a bigger problem. In my son's case it spread quickly. I am wishing that I could get a do over on this with my son's legs. Good luck.

My friend's boys both had Molluscum and she used tree oil on it and that seemed to work really well in getting it to go away. Her youngest had it for a couple of months and her oldest still has it but it is getting better. I would try the tree oil just to see if it helps any.
Best of luck to you!

my daughter had it and it took over a year to go away. one thing that was recommended was to eliminate baths and switch to showers as the bacteria can linger on the bathtub surface. not sure if it's true or not. we tried the homeopathic treatments, tea tree oil and doctor prescribed creams. nothing worked. i caution you not to pick or scratch and if the outbreak is really bad and oozy, cover it with a bandaid to discourage scratching and spreading. good luck. it sucks.

My son had that when little. It looked just like that but we had a lot more. You can wait but it could take months to a year. OR, get a referral to a dermatologist. They put something called carthenon (if i'm remembering correctly) which is a derivative of beetle juice on the bumps. Sounds crazy but it they went away immediately after a day or two and it didn't hurt him at all. Hope that helps.
