Molluscum Contagiosum

No, it's not a Harry Potter curse. Sadly, my 8-year old son has it. The pediatrician says to wait a few months then see a dermatologist if it does not clear up, but it just keeps getting worse and spreading. Has anyone out there dealt with this?

What can I do next?

As far as I know the Molluscum Contagiosum is highly contagious. I see that you have other children. My boy had that on his skin about 4-5 years ago. It started as tiny little bumps. I took him to the pediatrician but did not feel satisfied with his response. After seeing a dermatologist I felt good. He prescribed a liquid that had to be applied on the little bumps only, using a toothpick and the Molluscum was gone after a few days. Do not delay.
I hope this helps.

I've been amazed at how many solutions dermatologists have to things while we've been needlessly suffering. I would go sooner rather than later!

I'm surprised at the advice of your pediatrician. My pediatrician mis-diagnosed it and the goofy virus spread to all my kids. It's very contagious. I'd suggest getting to a dermatologist right away!

Two of my sons have had this and it won't just go away, I would take them to the dermatologist right away. They will treat each individual area, it may take a few visits, but it will go away after it is treated. good luck!

Hi D.,
My daughter(who is now 12) had this same condition and was so self concious about it she was miserable. She called them warts and didn't want to wear shorts all summer due to them. The doctor recommended cutting off some and eventually her body would realize that they didn't belong and they'd go away, but my daughter wouldn't let me (can say I blamed her). We went to a dermatologist after awhile and they put something on it that basically froze them on the top and they dried up and would come off, it only took 2 very painless treatments and she was cured (it was NOT a wart remover, we had tried that and it didn't work)! We haven't seen any since (that was over a year ago) so I'd recommend the dermatologist if you are able to go to one. I've heard that eventually they can outgrow them, but that is hard to wait for when you are feeling like a 'toad'. Best of luck, if you have any questions feel free to e-mail or call me: ###-###-#### or ____@____.com. I was told by the doctor too that children that have a weak immune system tend to have this condition (it's like a virus they can't fight). I would also recommend building up your child's immune system with some powerful antioxidants like OPC-3 (it's natural and in isotonix form so your body absorbs it quickly) you can read more about that on my web portal: www.marketamerica.com/jendiehl as well as other products. I did not know about OPC-3 at the time my daughter was suffering with this condition, but it has helped my entire family now (we haven't been sick since using it).
It will go away, their body just has to realize that it's there and reject it and fight it off - but you can help it along...please check into the web portal when you get time.
Feel free to contact me.
Take Care,
J. Diehl

My son's had it. I can tell you that it takes months to clear up. The hard part is not spreading it. The inside white part is the contagious part. In my son's case the had little pimples. It seemed that in the bath the warm water would make them easy to pop, so to speak. I would watch them and if one looked like it was ready I would take tweezers and take out the middle part. Oonce that was gone it would go away. I just kept watching it until we got it all. I know there are some other treatments, but my ped told me they can cause scarring and that letting it go away on it's own was a better way.

If your boys are scratching at it try to cover it with gauze so the white insides does not get on their hands to spread it.

My son had it when he was about 10, and our pediatrician treated the biggest lesions with liquid nitrogen. They dried up and vanished. We haven't had any trouble with it since. Good luck. D.

My daughter had molluscum when she was 7. It was all over her body. We tried the cream that the derm. prescribed and it did not work at all. I ordered an essential oil blend that was meant to treat molluscum, and it did help a little, but since it didn't get rid of it all, they just came right back. Finally, my friend (whose daughter also had them) told me that her doctor showed her how to remove them herself. So that's what I did - i sat my daughter down with a bowl of hershey's kisses in front of her (we don't eat sweets that often, so it was a HUGE treat for her). I told her that she could eat as many as she wanted as I removed the molluscum - just to take her mind off of it. I used a toothpick and stuck it into the skin, just to the side of the 'ball', pinched out the ball onto a kleenex and then applied rubbing alcohol to the area - it really bleeds for a minute. I did this until she couldn't stand it any more - so I would get 15-25 out at a time. I think we had to have these little 'kiss parties' 4 or 5 times before we got them all. She has minimal scarring on the inside of her elbow, but that's it. It's been two years and there has been no recurrence. I wish I would have done this from the beginning!! Two of my other daughters started to get a couple, right around the time that I started removing my oldest daughters', and I removed them right away, and we have not had a problem since. Good luck with your son!! I do NOT envy you!! ;-)

D.,

Both of my children caught this yucky virus. Our doctor told us that they should clear up in 6 months. Well, some of them actually took a year to go away.

Consider going to the dermatologist but be warned the medicine the doctors use will usually cause scarring. My son unfortunately had them all over his face (most of them around his ears) and looked awful. When they started clearing up he looked like he had chicken pox. Thank goodness he only has one scar in his ear that most people would ignore but I know where it came from and why.

I know they itch but keep him from scratching them or the virus will spread quickly. I used to cover them with those little waterproof bandaids when they were clearing up just to keep them from getting infected.

Good luck! Hang in there and remember most moms have been through this one and know your son is not experiencing a Harry Potter curse - but a very cute way of describing it though!

My son got this a little before his first birthday...started as 3 bumps, which the doctors told us at several different visits to wait, it will go away. It got MUCH worse, and we finally couldn't take it and took him in to an excellent dermatologist. After a couple months of treatment, it is finally (knock on wood!) gone. I am so happy - and I wish we would've gone in when there were only 3 spots. That would've been much simpler.... Please take him in. (Also, keep his skin moisturized, when you're dry and itchy, you scratch and can spread it more easily.)

Note: I did try that SilverCure after talking to my pediatrician (6 mos after diagnosis). My son was too young for this to work well on. He didn't understand and couldn't sit still and not touch long enough for it to dry and really hated the whole process/fought us with it. I heard mixed reviews from people on using that, but we were willing to try about anything. I really wished I would've gone to the dermatologist earlier...all in all, it took a total of a year before they were gone - 6 months of waiting hearing the dr say they'd go away on their own, then a month or two with the SilverCure, then finally the dermatologist. I can't imagine how much longer they would've been around for if we hadn't taken him in to the dermatologist. :(

We are still battling this after 4 years! They have gotten better but if my daughters immune system is depressed they reappear. The worst part of these for us was the excema. We would put medicine on the bump but would try to put lotion on the excema part and they would spread! The funniest story in all this was when my youngest daughter had a prescription for genital warts medicine and had to have that filled! I think each child reponds differently to the virus and my daughters just couldn't get rid of them even after band-aiding and cleaning and medicine.

SUCKY!!! My 2 year old son has this and it spread all over from his arms , arm pis stomach , back and even to his genitals i took him to a derm. and she said to watch it and stuff and it pretty much cleared up on its own .. it will tend to look worse before it gets better , like it will look like an infected pimple and then it goes away .. but as of now they are all cleared up and since his bad breakout its only been about 4-6 months before it did clear up all the way

I just read about this condition. I would look into a way to boost his immune system to help his system fight it off faster. Check with your doctor or go to a homeopathic for some supplements to give his system the boost it needs. Good Luck!

I hate that stuff. My son got it when he was 2. They told me it was nothing and that it will just go away, so, I waited for it to go away, because he only had two little bumps. Well he had those two little bumps for almost 3 years. we are still fighting the one by his eye. I think he gave it to my friends little girl who had it all over her body and hers cleared up right away after she started treatment. DO NOT WAIT just go to the dermatolosist!!!! I hope your son clears up quickly.

My son (age 2 at the time) had it first with only a few bumps on his stomach and then my daughter (age 3 at the time) caught it from him only she got it worse. It started on her neck with just a few spots, but quickly spread (because if they're scratched or opened they will spread). Our doctor told us the same thing, but when the spots started to spread to her face I started searching the internet. I found a treatment called ZymaDerm. It had very good reviews for the most part so I decided it was worth a shot. I had been told that the treatments offered by dermatologists didn't always work and could be painful. To my suprise it did work for us too. I used it on both children and of course my son's cleared up right away. It took a couple months using it twice a day for my daughter, but they finally cleared up. They do offer a money-back guarantee also which is really nice. Below are a couple sites that you could check out if you're interested in checking it out. I hope this helps! Good luck!

My son had that for over 2 years!! I thought it would never go away. The dr didn't recommend putting my son through the treatments they have. I found this stuff called zymaderm online (www.zymaderm.com). I figured it was worth a try. It worked! But you have to do it religiously. It doesn't burn either. They were offering a money back guarantee. I would recommend trying it. Good luck!

Hi D.,
My girlfriend who has a 9 yr. old and 6 yr.old just went to the dermatologist last week and had them removed. Her boy's had it for a year. Her pediatrician told her it will clear up - but it did get worse so she called a dermatologist and they got them in right away knowing what they had. They removed them buy using a blackhead remover - where the dr. just press' hard to break each one. And they do it really fast. I hope this helps and good luck!

Oh my goodness yes! My eldest son had this a couple years ago and my neice also had it, but she had it much much worse than my son ever did. Do NOT wait to see a dermatologist. It will not necessarily go away on it's own and it will continue to spread. My dermatologist gave us a topical oitnment that basically burned the spots off.

Good luck, and I'm sorry you and your son have to deal with this! :(

don't wait!! Go to the derm asap. the last part of that "contagiosum" means contagious! If your 8 year old has it, pretty soon your 6 and 2 year old will too. Wash his things separatly in very hot water, don't let them take baths together and make sure it is always covered by either clothing or a bandage. Good luck :)

I feel your pain D.. My 4 yr. old son contracted molluscum last Spring (I don't know how). It started under his arms and spread to his stomach and legs. I felt so bad for him because they would really flare up and get red and painful. Each day it seemed like there was a new one that would pop up. My pediatrician also said there was nothing really to do about it. The dermatology treatment is painful and costly. It did eventually clear up on it's own in the Fall. I know it is very unsightly and such a pain to keep covered up in the warm weather, but it does spread if it's not covered. Unfortunately, my 2 yr. old now has it a year later! It started as one little bump on his shoulder and now is on both shoulders, his neck, stomach, and even one in the groin area. So far they are not as inflamed as his brothers were, but I suspect the warm weather is going to aggravate it. I tried for a while to not bathe the boys together, but I guess I didn't do it for long enough. I have to admit that I actually bought some silver treatment off the internet that I used on my older son. I can't say that it did any good. Some of it really burned. My son seemed to like the soothing spray and "second skin" that went with it though. I think it had sort of a placebo effect on him. I had to cover the really inflamed and "white head" spots with band aids when he didn't have long sleeves on. Anyway, I'm sorry I don't have much good news for you. It did finally clear up on it's own, but I'm waiting to see if it comes back with the heat. My son also has eczema which exasperates the problem. One other thing, so far I have not contracted it despite touching it daily to put lotion on. (knock on wood) It's hard to get the little boys to practice the hygiene that we have. Good luck to you. Let me know if you have any questions or if you got some really good advice from anyone else. ---C.

Oh my gosh!!! Do not wait to see if it clears up, it usually doesn't!!! I would try to get into the derm. ASAP.
Both of my children are adopted from Russia. When we brought them home, my daughter (3 years at the time) had it and very soon my son (1 year) got it from her and it spread relentlessly. It took many treatments to get rid of it.
Hopefully, your son's case is mild. If nothing else, get it treated so he doesn't get teased about it.
