For Halloween my twelve year old niece wants to be a punk rocker and wants to know if we can give her a mohawk or put spikes in her hair. Her hair is pretty long. I heard you can do it with Elmer's Glue but I dont know if it will wash out. Does anyone know if its ok to use glue or if there is something else out there we can use.
Thank you so much for everyone's responses!!!! Who knew Mohawks would be a popular topic :) My sister was able to get some gel stuff from her hairdresser and then they went crazy with the blowdryer and hairspray. She looked great!!
Thanks again!!!!

I heard years ago when the punk scene was HOT that egg whites worked to created some of the crazy long mohawks that were scene around that time. Now they make something called hair "glue". It even comes in colors. I bought a red one at Supercuts, but I think they sell it at Target or Wal-Mart. Good Luck with that one. Tee Hee.

I used to have punk friends in school who would get their hair that was like to their shoulders (or longer) to stick straight up in a mohawk. I cannot remember the product name but I think they said they got it at like Hot Topic. The stuff did take awhile to come out of the hair. Hope you guys find the trick for her treat! I love halloween too!!!!

Hi J.,
For Halloween last year, I was the bride of Frankenstein and had my long hair stand straight up. My husband scrubbed wet bar soap into the roots of my hair and spread it a little bit down my hair while I laid on my back with my head hanging over the edge of the couch (so my hair was as straight as possible). He then mixed up some egg whites and put that into the rest of my hair. After it dried and with the help of a little hair spray, I had hair standing straight up! It also came out pretty easily. Rinse in the shower and lots of conditioner.
Hopefully it works for you, too!

Here is some advice from an old school punk rocker ^.^
If you use glue, get the blue kind, it works better, and yes it will wash out. Usually if you wash with baking soda, it will really help wash the glue out.
Knox gelatin works well also for long hair also. You can find it in the canning section of your supermarket. Basically it needs to be put in the hair, molded, and then held up with two combs and blow dried.
I use extra hold Aqua Net hair spray for my son's Mohawk, but his Mohawk is about 4 inches long. With this method, take two combs, comb the Mohawk upwards, hold the two combs with one hand and blow dry with the other hand. You basically have to do a section at a time. With my son it is basically two sections, the top part, and the part on the back of his head. Flat iron works really well with the hairspray method when the hair is long.
If holding two combs to keep the hair up and blow drying at the same time seems impossible, have her lay her head to the side close to a flat surface such as a table, and comb it upwards with whatever molding you decide and blow dry.
Depending on how long the hair is, it will take a few hours to complete, so allow enough time to get the hair styled before you go on your Halloween outings. Also she should probably at least have her shirt on that she will wear with her costume. If needed, use an old towel around her neck to keep the hair molding off her cloths.
Spikes can also be made with all of this stuff as well, mold and blow dry each spike one at a time, and do one row at a time. Basically separate hair in various rows (this all depends on how thick the hair is), you want the base of each spike at least 1 inch by 1 inch square. When you are finished, do a last sweep of the hair spray and add perfection.
Hope this helps! And be patient! It might take some time to finish up the hair and get it to look good, but once it is done, it will look really cool.

Growing up in the 80's I can tell you a safer way than glue, buy aquanet hair spray and turn her head upside down and spray it with tons of spray and it should spike the hair pretty good.

Hi J.. If her hair is long it may not stand properly no matter what you use. I would skip the glue and use Knox gelatin and Aqua Net..it washes out. That's what we used "back in the day" :-)

The punks I knew as a teenager used egg WHITES, and Aqua net hair spray, and a hair dryer. That could get any length of hair up! You can also do pony tails all down the middle of her head 1st, think Sanjaya from American Idol!
Good Luck!!

I think Elmers glue does wash out from what I have heard, but that would be a lot of glue to wash out, so who knows how well/quick you could get it out. I would google something like "spike Hair + home ideas" or something to that effect and see if there are any choices, otherwise see if you can find a wig, just to be on the safe side. You might be able to get one cheap if you search online at discount markets or maybe ebay.
Good luck

when i was in high school it was cool to have different color hair... or at least thats what i thought, We used kool-aid just use the powder you can buy in the packets and you can add a little water to get it in all of your hair, but if your daughters hair is really really long i don't know if it will work. The color shouldn't stay once you wash it out. I'm not sure about elmers glue though... I hope everything works out and that you have a Happy Halloween!

When I was in grade 8 I went as Static CLing for Halloween. My hair was past my shoulders and i used Elmers Glue and water to stand it straight up. It worked great, but I needed WD40 to get it all out.
A couple of years ago (I am now 38) I went as static cling again. I didn't want to do the glue thing as I figured that had to be more technology around "gluing your hair straight up"/ SO I went into a really funky salon, you know the ones that most people shake their head at as they walk by, and I asked them what to do. The recommended about 6 different products that would "stiffen" my hair. Just go and ask, I am sure there is something even better now.
I have not tried this but I've heard of using egg whites!?
At least you know it will wash out. Hope it helps.
Happy Halloween!
Good Luck, D.

Lol! Good morning luv! I greet you in love and send you my joy. I don't know I would recommend glue lol! Try a regulr mouse or styling gel first. Sometimes [around here anyway] you can find fun stuff like this at your local 5 and dime store or pharmacy. They have hair paint that is VERY stiffening and designed to wash out and sometimes you can find a cheap costume wig reasonably priced for these occasions. Good luck and have fun!

I have used a product that is essentially elmer's glue for hair. It was called Hair Glue. I think the brand I used was Citre Shine. A good strong gel plus a lot of hairspray should also do the trick.

I tried vaseline one year. It worked great with a giant coat of hair spray on top of the vaseline. You can only guess what happened! Could NOT get that stuff out of his hair for WEEKS. He didn't even want to go to school cuz the kids teased him for having dirty, greasy hair.
How 'bout a wig?

Hello J.,
I have never heard about Elmers Glue but as a cosmetologist when I was in school
I did a fan mohawk from the back and I just used really good hair spray. You take
small sections start in the middle hold it up spray with hair spray and use a blow dryer to
set it in place. Take the next section and brush it up smooth and spray with hair spray
use the dryer and repeat. It will take a while and probably be solid as a rock when your done
may take numerous shampoos to get it all out, but at least it is for your hair.
Good luck.

HI...yea...don't use glue!!! that will just ruin her hair!!!! Go to your hair salon or beauty supply and get REDKIN Urban Experimant 26 - Enamal Gel. This will work goo at keep this hair in spikes!!!! This is a new product out there. There are others like Sabastian, etc that have something called MUD and I hear that works too. But I would try the Redkin first. Also, redkin sells a hard hold hair spray that you shoudl use with it too...(or any other strong hold hair spray) This will give her the hard core spikes and give a patent leather effect!!! Good luck!!! But please, do NOT use glue...it really will damage the hair unless it is a water base...but still....!!!

You can buy some special sculpting 'mud' at a beauty store. That's what most of my students use on their hair. Glue takes a long time to wash out, so it's only suitable if you want your hair to stay that way for a week.

I would recommend just using Hairspray alone. Forget the glue just think about how long it will take for her to soak her head to get it all out. I have seen this done on TV, Bravo channel had a program called Shear Genius and one of the people did a Mohawk straight out of the 80's. You use hairspray and I would use whatever is at the .99 cents only store so its cheaper. Anyway, you section the hair then comb it up by using hairspray on the comb first (you hold the comb out and spray it with the hairspray then apply to hair) to run it through the hair. And you use a low blowdryer. You add more hairspray as needed to get the hair to stay upright. Once its done its up until you wash it out and you only have to wash it once. You can practice this technique with a little section of her hair before halloween so you know if it works for her or not. That's my best advice since she has long hair as do I and I would not put glue in my hair for any reason. I used to work in daycare and would come home with it and fingerpaint in my hair all the time so I know how long it takes to get glue out of long hair. And if her hair is thick forgetaboutit. W. H

My husband used to be one of those punks and had long liberty spikes , when he was a teen. He is now 36. He says he wounldn't recommend what he did to his hair because he was a "dirty punk" and once he did his hair he did not wash it for days. Elmer glue he said would be a pain to get out, but if you look at a hair salon they should have styling glue for your hair. Super Cuts has something called Spikez in different colors.

Hi. At my daughter's dance performance school... they also have used Elmer's glue... since it is water soluble and non-toxic, and they say is does wash out. Her instructors say this REALLY keeps the hair in place, and say this is what stage performers use too. Have not tried it on my own daughter yet. Also, there are some pretty strong hair gel products now... the brand "Tigi" makes some great hair pomade things that are real strong. Another suggestion, per my girls dance school... is using strong hair gel... then spraying it with the hair-spray Aqua Net... using a LOT. For some reason, Aqua Net is supposed to hold real well. Since your niece's hair is long... maybe also ask your Hair dresser for any suggestions... or maybe they can even do your nieces' hair for you, for Halloween. I imagine longer hair will be harder to make it stick straight up, for a punk rocker style. Sounds like fun for your niece... good luck.!

There is a product you can buy in salons called "spiker" it even comes in many colors, I have used it on my own long hair. It will wash out but you will have to shampoo a few times, the color does NOT stay in the hair either...
