Miscarriage

I hate to ask this, but I am really needing some information. I had a miscarriage in January. I had a D&C. I miscarried again in July and I decided not to get D&C. I think I was 6 weeks pregnant. THe doctor told me without the D&C that I would probably bleed for a week. That was 6 weeks ago and I am still bleeding. I stopped for a week. It started again about a week ago and it doesn't show any signs of stopping. I called the doctor and they said that can be normal. It's driving me crazy! Has this happened to anyone else? Is there anyone out there who opted out of the D&C after a miscarriage? What was your experience?

What can I do next?

Hi L.,

I am so sorry to hear about your miscarriges.
I have had 2 and neither one I had to have a D&C because I miscarried around 5-6 weeks.
I did bleed for a good week with both miscarriages but no longer.
Definitely call your OB again and tell them you are still bleeding and you know this is "NOT" normal.
It should not take 6 weeks to lose the baby.....I am no doctor but I know that's not normal and your OB needs to see what else is going on with you.

Good luck and I hope things get better for you. Keep us updated!

First, I'm sorry to hear you are going through this. I had multiple miscarriages and lost both of my tubes to ectopic pregnancies - NO FUN!!

I would call your doctor and insist on an ultrasound. It could be ok, but I had the same thing happen. Although, I had a D&C, my doctor kept telling me everything was fine, you can bleed for awhile, but while I was on vacation I went into shock, was rushed to the hospital. I had emergency surgery to remove an ectopic pregnancy that had ruptured my tube and I was bleeding to death inside.

I hate to scare you, but it can't hurt to be sure what you are going through is normal. L.:)

Hi, L. I just wanted to second what everybody was already saying. I had a natural miscarriage in May and I only bled for about a week. I was exactly 6 weeks- started spotting on a Thursday, passed everything by Monday, and was finished bleeding by the next weekend. 6 weeks seems like a long time to bleed for- I think your doc should at least do an u/s to see if there's any tissue left. I'm so sorry for both of your losses.

I've had two miscarriages and didn't have a D&C with either one. The first one, I bled a really long time, though not super heavy. On the advice of my midwife, about after 4 or 5 weeks of bleeding, I went to the health store and got Red Raspberry (an herb) and I took two every two hours and it really finished everything off quickly. The second time I miscarried, I did this right away and didn't have any extended bleeding. There aren't any side effects, and you can't overdose on it or anything. However, if you do this, stay home if you can. You will bleed ALOT and pass huge clots (at least I did, both times) It can seem like you are bleeding too much, but you probably aren't. That's been my experience. I hope you can get it resolved.

First of all I'm sorry for your loss... You really need to get the doc to do an ultrasound b/c that leftover tissue can cause infection, and you don't want that. 6 weeks is waaayyy to long to bleed. I had d&c's with both of mine, but I delayed my first b/c I thought it would pass, after 2 weeks they did a sono and there was still "debree" so they wanted to go ahead and do the d&c to avoid infection.

Hi L.,

So sorry to hear about your miscarriage. I know it can be really rough! I had one last March and opted out of the D&C as well. I bled for quite awhile, but I honestly don't remember how long....maybe 3 weeks?

Is the bleeding heavy? Or are you just spotting? Is it bright red or dark? Do you have any cramping??

Worse case scenario: Your body may not have passed all the tissue and unfortunately the doctor may need to perform a D&C to get the rest so you don't get an infection.

Hopefully that isn't the case and your body is just taking a little longer to recover being that this is your second loss? I wish you a fast recovery because I know you are anxious to try again!

L.--I have had 5 miscarriages of various varieties. I had 2 D&C's. Two were very early. When the third one happened I decided to wait. It turned out to be an ectopic pregnancy and I was a few hours away from a blood transfusion when my doctor put me in the hospital. I agree 6 weeks is a long time and you can at least get a sonogram to find out if you indeed need a D&C.
