Hi A.-

I had the Mirena implanted in August...almost a year ago. Although I still have it, I've had some issues with it.

First, within the first few weeks I developed a painful cyst. They can't really pinpoint if it was the Mirena or if it eas already there, but I think it's just to coinsidental.

Second, I bled from it for a very long time...almost 6-8 weeks. It was pretty light, but very annoying. I remember thinking, if it was safe to wear a tampon all the time.

Third, my periods are really weird now. They come once a month, but they're not heavy and I'll spot for 2 weeks straight. Nothing one day and a little something the next...very annoying!

I can't say it's like this for everyone though. Maybe your body will react differently.

It very convenient bc I don't have to remember to take the pill and there is pretty much no chance of getting pregnant. The only reason why I'm keeping it is bc we plan to have one more baby. After that, I will not get it reimplanted.

Good luck!
-A.

PS. Just to warn you, It hurts when they put it in...you cramp quite a bit.

I don't know if using Mirena is a good idea. I had read that in the Mirena article in a magazine I believe. You are very lucky to get pregnant. My hubby and I went through various infertility issues when I discovered I had endo. I didn't even know I had it. The infertility was a sign though. We were older anyhow and things just didn't work for us. But, however we have adopted which she is the love of our life.

Good luck with the mirena if that's what you decide. I would check into it farther though!!!

I have had mine for 4 months. I love it. No problems at all. When you read articles about problems associated w/ it you need to realize that the hormones in this device are VERY low and are not systemic (they don't affect the whole body). So people that think that this is linked to hormonal problems but then take the pill are goofy (the pill is PURE HORMONES). You will have alot of body changes post baby and folks think that these changes are associated to the mirena (ie, hair loss, acne, moodiness, etc). However, there are risks. Talk w/ your doctor and figure out if it is a good option for you.

Hi A.,
It looks like from the responses on here people either love it or hate it. So do your research on it. I had one and loved it. It was uncomfortable getting it in, and I did cramp some the first couple days, but after that I didn't even know it was there! By the 4th month I stopped having periods. I had mine removed because my hubby and I decided we want to have one more child (not the most cost effective if you don't use it for awhile!!) But I think it is a great choice. I didn't have problems with headaches like I did on the pill. Once we have another child, I will get another put in. That is just my experience and opinion :) Good luck!

Hello A.,
My suggestion is to get as much info as you can on Mirena. I have been currently using mirena for almost a year. I do know that there are two types; one that lasts 5 years and one that lasts 10 years. You may experience spotting for as little as a few months to several months, then your periods should stop altogether. Good luck with your decision.

I have had the mirena in for about 7 months. I think it is great. I have 2 children 2 1/2 and 9 months. It took about 5 months for my body to get used to it completely but it is the best thing. When I had mine put in I had no problems. I also didn't have any cramping but for the day of. I used to get horrible periods even on the pill but the last 2 months no periods. I would recommend it. Hope this helps.

I would not suggest it! I had one put in this past November. By January I was having strange pains, nausea, vomiting, etc... When I had it checked out they realized the IUD was not placed correctly. They could see it on an x-ray, but they could not find it through ultrasound to get it out! I had to have lapriscopic surgery to put a camera in, find the IUD, and take it out! My doctors said that the IUDs can migrate, but that obviously it is very rare. However, the Physician's Assistant said that lately they have been seeing more and more problems with the Mirena. Also, since this has happened to me I found two other people I know that this happened to! Crazy stuff! Good luck and God Bless!

Hun, its the easiest way to protect yourself from unwanted pregnancy for the next 5 years. Its a great birth control and although some people do not like it, its seriously not that bad. I have recommended it to several family members and NONE of them have had any complaints about it (other than the cramping the day they got it) but even that was mild. I would talk to your doctor but it is an awesome birth control method, and every one I know whos on it, loves it! God Bless and I hope that helps!

I have a Mirena and I love it! My SIL has the Paragard IUD (without hormones) and doesn't like it much. I have had the Mirena for just over a year. The insertion wasn't fun but not horrible either. If it doesn't work for you, you could always have it removed. I do have a period but it is very light and lasts for only a day or two. Good luck in your decision!

I had twins March 07, I wanted a birth control that I didn't have to think about or worry about getting to the Pharmacist to fill a prescription. It lasts for 5 years and the cost is intial instead of monthly and was cheaper in the long run. I use the Mirena and I am happy with it. I don't really have periods just some spotting once in a while. It has worked well for me. I know that it doesn't work for everyone but talk with your Doctor and do what you feel is best for you and your situation.

I have heard more complaints than not about mirena. I had an a terrible time with pills. I was sick and moody all of the time, as far as the shot we won't go there.
But I am on the Nuva Ring. Its easy and really I can't complain to much. I have one mild issue with it which i am sure no one wants to hear. But I don't feel it. my mood isn't crazy. My periods are super short. I have less cramps. I like it and so do most of my friends who use it. My insurance even pays for it.

I've been on Mirena for about 2.5 years now. I LOVE it. I don't feel anything, my hormones aren't crazy up and down and I am one of the lucky 20% that doesn't have a period. I have tried pills and the depo shot and it is definitely my favorite. (Plus my insurance company covered it 100%, but I hear thats rare)

If you've had problems with BCP's you'll have problems with Mirena because it's coated in the same hormones that BCP's are made out of.

I have Mirena, and I love it. I haven't had any problems with it, and I really like that I don't have to think about it. :)

It is safe for nursing moms, and I have a friend who had it put in at her 6 week checkup.

It depends on the nature of the issues you had with the pill, and what hormones are in the ones you had issue with compare to Mirena. The side effects are similiar to the pill with the added complications of the IUD itself (which has its own side effects).
