Hello to all Moms! I went to the gyne in November of 07 and had the Mirena IUD inserted. I have a couple of questions regarding this - Has anyone gone back for the 3 month checkup to make sure that it was in the right place (I have not and in a couple of months it'll be a year)? And when does your period get back to normal? I do not get a heavy period, but just this pain in the butt spotting for about 2 weeks. And it's not even heavy spotting, just a little. I am wondering when I can expect either no period, or a more normal cycle? I have no other side effects, no cramping, no headaches, no bloating - absolutely nothing (which is great!)Just curious?! Thanks to all!!!

What can I do next?

First of all the Mirena IUD gives off hormones and you will most likely never really have a normal period or none at all as time goes on....I believe the good Lord made us woman the way we are for a reason and the one important thing is to flow normally every month....That is very unhealthy not to. I had the IUD "Paraguard" 10 year implant put in and it does NOT release any hormones which gives me my regular cycle every month and I have had nop problems. Also that chances of it not being in right are slim, cause if it wasn't in right YOU WOULD KNOW.....

Hi-
I did go back and they just quickly hecked it- no biggie. Not sure about your spotting, my periods went away!!! I do not have any side effects either. Go for your yearly and ask the doctor about the spotting. Good luck!

Hi M.,
I had the Mirena for about 8 months. I jsut had it removed. I spotted constantly for the first three months. Had three normal periods. Then I went for my yearly exam, which was a bout three days after my period ended. From that day on I spotted again. And for one week straight it was super heavy, very unlike my normal periods. It had me so worried and scared, i had the iud removed. I asked the doctor why it would all of a sudden make me bleed so much. She had no answer, jsut oh well, we'll take it out. She said when she checked it was in place and a-ok. So anyway, I've heard that it could make your period go away completely. Or, like in your case, make it very light. Or make you spot spiradically. Don't know if this helps you at all, but it's what happened to me.

Hi! I had it inserted in October of 07. I have not gone back to get it checked. From what I read the spotting usually lasts about 6 months. For me it was about 7 months, but it finally did stop. My periods did not stop completely, though. They are lighter though, and normally last about 5 days.

Most women report an end to the spotting within a year of insertion and many women at that point report no period at all. I would expect it to taper off over the next few months. If it doesn't your doc/midwife can prescribe a month or two of birth control pills to help regulate your body and that is usually very helpful for most women.

Hi M.,
I also had the Mirena procedure as well. I just had my third child in April of 08. and the procedure was done in July. I didn't start spotting until approximately 2-3 weeks later. Afterwards I had a normal 5 day period. My doctor was to do a follow up after my August cycle which is exactly 4 weeks after the procedure was done. I don't have any side effects. I suggest that you make a visit to your doctor just to make certain that everything is okay. Never make any assumptions because it's better to be safe than sorry. Good Luck and God Bless.

Hi M.,

I too had the Mirena put in, and I am having the same problems. I did not go back for the 3 month check up I just assume everything is fine. I would love to know what everyone says, please forward any helpful responses to my email at ____@____.com. I am thinking about going back to get the seasonal pills something has to work.
Thanks so much.

T.M.I. that your dr. could answer from a mere phone call. If you insist on not making an appt like he told you to, you're taking your own risks on infection, pregnancy, and other complications. You have 2 children to love and care for; take care of yourself so you'll be there for them for many years to come.

I have had two Mirena IUDs, one removed when we decided to have a third child. After the first one was inserted, it took about 4-5 months to get regular with no spotting. After about 7 months, I had no periods at all, which was great! I did not get it checked, no one looked at it until I had it removed 3 years later. (I got preg within a month of removing it, too, which was a huge relief).

The second one was similar, I spotted at times other than my period for about 5 months. I have had it about 8 months now, no longer spotting, very very light periods. They have not disappeared altogether yet. I did go back this time for the re-check since I would have some bleeding after sex, the implant was a little low.

I feel that this IUD is well worth the wait and annoyance of spotting. You don't have to deal with the health risks associated with the various pills, patches, and shots, if you remove it you can become immediately pregnant, and once it is regulated, you hardly have any periods at all. And no thinking about birth control! Sorry to sound like an ad, but I have had a good experience with them.

I got the Mirena inserted in Jan/07 and had the annoying spotting/bleeding for probably about 6 months after. Then it got lighter, and after about a year I barely even get a period. Just like a tinge of pink, I don't even need a panty liner. It's awesome! I did not go back for the 3 month, but had my anual exam recently and everything was where it should be. I highly recommend this birth control which is more reliable than a vasectomy and reversible, for anyone who is considering it :-).

I am coming up on the one year mark with mine also. I no longer have any bleeding or spotting, but it's only been for about 3 months now. So I'm not sure if this is the new normal or if I will spot again intermittently. I am sure hoping not. It seems like I will have a stretch with nothing then like 2 weeks of light annoying spotting and then cycle again. This is the longest it has gone though.

my comment is to Lori C. the normal every month "flow" maybe okay for alot of women but there are some women out there that the "normal" is constant pouring and gushing, i mean seriously would you like to go around with the biggest, thickest pad or the most absorbant tampon you can buy and it only lasting 30 minutes tops and then soaking your clothes.....just thought i would ask cause that is what happened to me 6 months after having my son and then until i got the Mirena tht is what i dealt with, i have had it for a little over a month now, just now getting my 2nd cycle and i am loving it besides the spotting which i have learned to overlook it cause its not that bad just a little annoying (mainly for the hubby)
