Mirena Problems

I know that many people have had a great experience with the Mirena IUC and I too thought it was great, and have been recommending it to others, but now I am not sure if I made the right decision getting one about 6 months ago. I experienced light bleeding or spotting for about two months and have had a couple very light periods in the last two months, which I expected. I have been having some other problems like depression, mood swings, inability to lose weight/weight gain(was losing weight until Mirena was put in), and cramping in my abdomen-still after 6 months. I was doing some research and I think I may be experiencing side effects from the Mirena IUC that I dismissed as hormone problems from having my second baby. I was put on Wellbutrin by my doctor, thinking it was postpartum depression, but now I am not sure. I never had it with my first daughter. I didn't think it was the IUC until I was researching about the cramping with the Mirena and found that there are some women who suffer these other side effects. I was wondering if anyone else had problems with the Mirena or any ideas on what would be a good alternative contraceptive that I wouldn't have to take everyday. Has anyone had the copper IUD? I have made an appointment with my doctor to talk to her about this.

What can I do next?

The side effects you experienced can be caused by any type of hormonal birth control. If you want to avoid them, you can use the Paragaurd or copper IUD. Not all doctors still do the paragaurd. There has been some research that suggests that the Paragaurd can cause problems in breast feeding infants, although nothing my dr. or the liturture addressed this. I do know that a couple friends of mine said that the copper IUD causes magnified periods. It increases bleeding and cramping.

M.,
I had the Mirena IUD and hated it...mine actually dislodged itself within the first thirty days of having it. Yes, I did have cramping with it. I am now on the depo shot (shot in rear every 12 weeks - you don't even feel the shot). I absolutely love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a relief to know I am not the only one!!! I have had my mirena in for 4 years and I am at the end of my rope with it. Granted, I have not become pregnant with it but the cons outweigh the pros. I am constantly spotting throughout the month, I get intense cramps, I also have been moodier than normal, gaining weight, and my sex drive is nowhere to be found!! I also have some other concerns that I think stem from this as well. I am having this removed in a couple of weeks and I suggest that if you are feeling off then have it removed. I wish that I could make a suggestion for another birth control, but I can't. But I do wish you the best of luck and hope that everything works out for you.

I have heard of this... Any hormones really bother me. Anyway, I have a friend who loves her copper iud and my sister loves the ring (thought that is still hormones). I would definitely push the issue! You have to get better.

PS. I second the Natural Family Planning. If you don't want to abstain the other days you can use some other form of birth control. I recommend the book Taking Charge of your Fertility. I found the information about my body fascinating and something I am excited to teach my 2 girls about.

I too had the exact same symptoms. I had it inserted in December and have had nothing but problems since. The cramping and weight gain alone is enough to make you want to have it removed. I did give it 6 months but I had it removed yesterday. It was instant relief as soon as it came out. My doctor thought that maybe it was in the canal rather than higher up where it should be. It can settle there and some women have no problems with it. I just happen to be one that did. You should definitely discuss with your doctor. But for me, it wasn't worth it anymore. Good luck and hope this helps!

I have a copper one, no hormones, so I have regular periods each month. I chose this one because I have hormonal migraines monthly and I didn't know if they were related to the birth control pills that I had been taking. I have been pleased with it. I got it a little over a year ago and have lost weight that I had gained on one brand of pills that I had been put on to try to help with my migraines.
I havent had any cramping with it since the first two months, but my periods are a full week.

I have the Mirena and have since the end of last year. I have had no real problems with it besides spotting and a few light periods. I am still hoping the spotting stops someday but anything is better than the horrible monthlys I had before. I do know my Doctor told me it would not stop any side effects from my monthly period. Mood swings, irritibility, bloating, all those things would remain the same. Mirena would only help with the flowing issues I had. My husband had a visectomy about 8 years ago so I am not on this for any type of birth control, just control of my period. I do know 2 different people that have gotten pregnant on the copper IUD and lost the child. Going to dicuss things with your Doctor is the best thing you can do. The hard part is all our bodies are different. With each child our bodies change too. I have 3 children (1 miscarriage and 1 step- so 5 actually) and with each biological pregnancy my body changed and reacted differently. So I would discuss your concerns completely with your Doctor about hormone problems and weight as well as Mirena. I personally use a OB Doctor still for these issues. I love my Family Doctor but feel a Doctor the specifies in an area sometimes is best when that is where your problems are. Ya know? Godd luck to you and God Bless!

M....I had the copper IUD (CU7) inserted many years ago. My body rejected it within one week. Then I went to the Tatum T. That worked well. Not sure this is still on the market, though.

Bottom line, if ANYONE is thinking of having another child in the future, do NOT get an IUD inserted. Hopefully, your doctor informed you of this fact.

I do not have the IUC in but i have a friend who does, she likes it as far as i know. the thing with it that i do not like is that her doc put it in without her being in a monagomous relationship. she is but the guy is not, i am so scared that she will wake up one day with pid or worse. the concept has been around forever but i am certain has not been perfected yet.

I do not have any experience with the IUD you're talking about, but I'd like to offer an alternative form of birth control to consider should you decide the Mirena isn't for you. Have you thought about Natural Birth Control, specifically the Creighton Method? It only requires a few moments of your time each day once you get used to the charting. It also requires the discipline from you AND your husband to abstain during the days when you could get pregnant. I guess you could call those the cons. The pros are you aren't using synthetic hormones, you and your husband have the opportunity to deepen other areas of your relationship when you need to abstain. My husband and I started using this after our daughter was born. We we decided to have another child, we used the charting to determine the best time, and within two months of trying, we were pregnant. I have to admit that over the past year or so, we've gotten away from it, but I'm making an appointment to go take a refresher course. If you have a Catholic hospital in your area, you could check with them to see if they offer the class. Or you could do a search on the web.

I had the Mirena put in and cramped and bled so badly at the doctor's office I had to have it removed right away. I was never able to have it redone because my doctor is afraid I am just not a candidate for it. Maybe you are like me and cannot handle it for some reason. My sister-in-law has it and has no problems except spotting some. I now get the depo shot every 12 weeks and let me tell you, it's wonderful. I have not had a period since the first shot in Feb. and didn't experience any spotting until the second shot, but the spotting was extremely light and has gone away. I don't know of any side effects I am experiencing except maybe some moodiness, but it isn't very often. I am also on wellbutrin, but I suffer from depression, so my case is different. But I think the depo shot has helped me a lot. Good luck.

hello M. i ad the copper IUD for about 8 months, never experienced the side affects that you mentioned except when i had a perion, i bled ALOT. i had to use a tampon and a pad and i bled like that for 4-5 days then it got lighter and ended on the 7-8 day. i wanted to get the mirena but my medicade would not pay for it. my husband did tell me that when we had our love sessions he could feel the strings and every once in awhile it pocked him good enough that we had to change positions. i got it taken out because i could not handle the bleeding. but it does work for up to 10 years. and it does not hurt getting put in or taken out. good luck with everything.

I had mine put in about 8 months ago and have an appt. to get it taken out on Monday.. I have been depressed, gaining weight, I have a constant pain in my pelvis and my back,my period the last two months has lasted for 10 days.. I hate not feeling like myself and I am hoping once this thing is out, in a few months I will be myself again!!! I have several friends that have it(which is why I got one) and they all love theirs and have no complaints so at first I thought I was going crazy, but after this many months I am sure the Mirena is my problem...
