Mirena - Long Period

I hope this doesnt contain TMI - but I figure we are all moms, and have been through the birthing process, so this is nothing!

I had the mirena inserted about 2 1/2 years ago. I had bleeding for about 2 months immediately, which was very light so easy to handle. After that I had regular periods which were very light but lasted 5-7 days which was annoying. My OB told me to try the pill for 3 months as there might be a hormonal imbalance. I did this. Now my periods are still very light (thankfully!), can be 5-9 days now in length, and are now about 24 days apart not 28.

I like that mirena is easy and my periods are very light when they used to be pretty heavy - but the frequency and length is annoying.

has anyone had either of these problems and tried something other than the pill to correct it? I called mirena themselves, but they were unable to help. Any ideas would be appreciated.

thanks

I don't really have any advice. I continued to have my period while on Mirena for 2 years. My periods on Mirena were 4-7 days and very light. My periods since removing the Mirena are 4-7 days and much heavier flow. I don't think what you are experiencing is that abnormal. If you are overly concerned you may need to talk to you OB some more.

I'm not sure why you are considering these things a problem. Having a period that lasts 7 days is totally normal and well within the averages for women, and anywhere from 24-32 days between periods is also totally normal. Nothing that you have written sounds out of the ordinary to me.

And while about 20% of women stop having their periods while on mirena, that means about 80% of women continue to have it. Sorry if this wasn't want you wanted to hear - but it sounds to me that this is just how your body cycles.

not much help to your question but i had the mirena and my periods stopped altogether which was nice. but i would have a cramping pain when having sex and my mother is a nurse and she told me i could get all kinds of infections having that in you so that scared me as well so i got mine taken out after a year of having it.

Hi, Michele.

Had you thought about stopping all this type of BC.
Your system is really being challenged with this external
stuff you are putting into your body.

Have you looked into a cervical cap?

Good luck.
